Hi all! This week I'm talking about one of my favourite ways of practising: 'noodling' about on the instrument, but doing this with a bit more focus, creativity and musicality than that term usually implies. I've found this to be a really valuable way to practice, particularly when I'm a bit pushed for time.

There are lots of ways to approach this and I detail some of them in the video. And this is something any player can do since the exercise can be easily tailored to your current level of knowledge and ability.

Hope you find it interesting. Tab can be found below.

Speak next week,

Adrian

Mindful Noodling

Here's a favourite practice strategy of mine. It's all about being musical and creative rather than just falling back on those default riffs and blues licks. Zac Haluza

Excellent timing since I’ve been short on time lately and have been looking to practice these exact concepts more efficiently. (Also, have you listened to the new Cure song?)

Luca Solari

... very very useful !!! :o)

Michael Richard Carter

So thoughtful and useful and with such clear support material it does go beyond the lesson and help me to help myself in many ways thank you

Bob

Brilliant! Great demonstrations I can integrate.

Michael Williams

Another great lesson, and great suggestion to start with what you know and push into areas your not comfortable with yet.

Ian West

Thanks Adrian as always. Any chance of doing another 'nice lick' at some point? Had a lot of fun with them in the past.

Matty

Like the Elvis Costello look.

Allan Dahlquist

Thank you so much. I feel like this lesson is custom made for the way I "practice" in that I tend to do mindless noodling. I expect that your suggestions will lead to more focus and flashes of insight. Mindful Noodling is a perfect title.

Love this lesson topic! Just watched the video and took a quick look at the tab, great stuff. I have an unrelated question though. That cactus in the background suddenly looks a lot bigger to me! What is in London water that it's growing so well there?? Lol . Just curious - I live in the southwestern U.S., Arizona so always noticing the cactus in your studio.

David

What a brilliant way to approach those short practices. Another super helpful lesson. Cheers!

Peter Healy

Cheers Adrian. I can use this approach to expand a current "Soul" song I am writing.

David Browne

I love this. I'm an intermediate level guitarist trying to work out what direction to go in. I need to get more disciplined with my noodling!

Jonathan Pilcher

I really find your videos engaging and I love your style - any chance you could look at This is the Life by the cardiacs

Jean-Louis Gravier

That an incredible amount of knowledge sharing in one lesson. Thank you so much.

NB

Thanks very much Adrian - just the kind of lesson I needed now as I have found my noodling a bit repetitive and mindless - so helpful!

Antonis Spyropoulos

Great lesson, please do more like this one, many thanks!

anyonecanplayguitar

Thanks Jonathan. Yes, Cardiacs are a unique band. I have to confess I've never really explored their music that deeply, but maybe I should start! Will certainly check out the song you mention.

anyonecanplayguitar

Yes, sounds like a great idea - definitely a really good way of exploring possibilities for guitar parts in a songwriting context.

anyonecanplayguitar

Thanks! Yes, I've not really paid the cactus much attention lately, it just sits there behind me and does its cactus-y thing. I'd have to check back on previous videos to see whether there's been some kind of growth spurt! I've certainly not done anything special other than watering it every few weeks.

anyonecanplayguitar

Cheers Matty got a new pair of specs recently. EC's definitely a style icon for me, always like the nerdy glasses!

anyonecanplayguitar

Thanks Ian. Yes, I'd almost forgotten about the nice lick series. But it's not been officially abandoned. So yes, I may well try and do another if I can come up with something suitably nice!

anyonecanplayguitar

Thanks Zac. Yes the new Cure track is absolutely epic, love it! So looking forward to the album.

Jonathan Pilcher

There are a very under-rated band. They have an English sound you don’t hear very often. Sadly the lead singer died way before his time after a long illness, so they never got to fulfil their potential.

Ian West

Thanks, Adrian. Got a lot out of this mindful noodling slot.

Iain G

Adrian, as always, you made my week!

Chris White

Absolutely excellent Adrian

Conrad Leifur

This is really foundational in terms of what I'm looking to get out of playing the guitar as an advancing beginner, opening up some new horizons! Thanks!

John Gilroy

Thanks Adrian, I need to explore and experiment more than simply relying on the tab. I appreciate your guidance. BTW, is that a 50th anniversary AC-30 with the mahogany cab? Original speakers?

Anthony LoMonaco

Joined because of this video. Man, this is it. Not learning tabs, but learning how to use a guitar to make music. Thanks, Adrian.
