Today I'm looking at the mighty Girl Like You by Edwyn Collins. This is such a fun song to play. The rhythm part is very straightforward and nice and beginner-friendly. I'm also taking a look at the great lead guitar work and those weird envelope filter fills you can hear during the verses.

Tab and backing can be found below. There are actually 2 tab charts - one for the rhythm parts and one for the lead. And also 2 backing tracks - one is just bass and drums for rhythm guitar practice, and the other includes the rhythm part for those of you who want to solo along.

A couple of fun facts - I didn't realise until last week that the drums on this track were sampled from a 1965 track by Len Barry - https://www.youtube.com/watch?vtm-7JpcWI

And Paul Cook from the Sex Pistols also played drums on it and can be seen in this great Later performance - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hh0Fy-HLIzA

Hope you enjoy it!

I love this tune as well. Not normally my kind of thing but it's real ear candy! Thanks, Adrian. And a funny thing is that I only found out about the Orange Juice connection a few months ago.

Paul Crane

Brilliant! I love this song - I still remember the first time I heard it & thought it was smashing! Thanks Adrian.

Content like this is why I subscribe. Well done!

Great tune - been meaning to look this one up so a nice surprise to see this today. Can I make a request for ‘Shark Fin Blues’ by Australian band The Drones? Lots of crazy stuff going on it that I can’t pick apart myself

Mick Marston

Fab, thanks for this. Attitude and economy far more interesting than any amount of unnecessary twiddling.

Angus Kingston

Love it. I also heard it again recently and had to learn it. You’ve given me even more than I knew. In Australia it was a hit too but also the soundtrack to the TV ad to a youth targets women’s fashion store. Also Tame Impala’s cover for ABC’s Triplej radio Like A Version is cool too. It’s on YouTube.

Once again, so thankful for you playing and teaching these outstanding tunes that go largely (and regrettably) ignored by most other online teachers. Cheers!

Ken Thompson

You're really rocking on this one! Love it.

Aldo Ferrari

That brings back some memories! Great performance and lesson, thank you

Guy

...great technique but nothing to say...so true! Brilliant Lesson!

Sara Landeau

This was NOT a hit in America, so it's all fresh ears and picking for me.

Hi Adrian, love what you do. I wasn't quite sure if this was the correct platform to make a a song request, but I was wondering if you could do a song by The Monochrome Set. Maybe, 'Jet Set Junta' , or 'Alphaville'?

Trevor Helps

Marvellous! Thank you, Adrian.

It's never really occured to me to harmonize a melody line by putting the melody at the bottom of triads, but it works!

Henry Gascon

Outstanding as always Adrian. One more future suggestion: Refugees by The Tears. I love Bernard Butler's guitar work on that track.
