Hi all! This week it's all about spread triads. I did a lesson on this subject way back, but I thought it was something worth revisiting. Once you know your basic triad shapes this is a more advanced option that's well worth exploring. I frequently use these shapes in my rhythm parts and guitar arrangements, and they're also useful for coming up with unusual single note phrases.

The video starts with a brief theoretical explanation and then I take you through all the most common major and minor shapes. I've also put together a little study which I hope will provide you with a nice, musical way of getting these shapes into your vocabulary.

The backing track and two tabs can be found below - the first contains the spread triad shapes and the second is the spread triad study.

Hope you enjoy it.

The Magic of Spread Triads: theory, must-know shapes & musical applications

In this video I'm investigating the beautiful sound of spread triads. After a brief theoretical explanation, I get into some essential fingerings and look at a spread triad study which contains all the most common shapes. Excellent explanation. I’ve been curious about spread triads since first ‘discovering’ Ted Greene. I had. Understood that there was a skipped string, but this video really helped me to begin to grasp the idea more clearly. Can’t wait to play around with these ideas. Thank you ✌️❤️🤟

Brilliant follow-on lesson from your excellent Triad Essentials Course which I have just completed. Any further lessons on the material at the end of the course (how to add colour notes in creative ways, transitioning between triads, how to use triads to create awesome solos etc) would be the bees knees 🐝🦵 - Thanks for this Adrian, triads are really helping open up the fretboard.

So much to do and enjoy here and I will start in a little while and never stop thank you

Fantastic lesson and so valuable. Thank you for sharing, Adrian.

Patrick

This is great thank you, definitely a few hours of drilling those ahead of me! Would love to hear any other applications of these spread triads

Thanks Patrick. Yes, there's probably a follow up video to be made at some point where I look at further applications.

Thanks Matty, yes I think this video follows on very naturally from my triads course. I'll certainly be looking at try it again on my channel in the future. There's also scope for a full-on advanced triads course which I may try and put together at some point.

Getting promising early results with sliding into these shapes and playing them as mini arpeggios

Thanks Brian, glad you found this video illuminating. Ted Green was an absolute master. I've got a couple of his books which I dig out occasionally when I need a bit of chordal inspiration.

Brian Bowes

Awesome! He was once described as being Guitar Yoda. That seems about right. While some of these technical explorations are a bit above my ability, it’s enjoyable to see and hear you walk through them. Can’t wait to see what your next curiosities are! ✌️❤️🤟

Matty

Excellent. I have already signed up and paid for your Full-On Advanced Triads course so you better get to work on creating it!!!!! 😂😂😂
