Hi all!

The new video is up, and it's Sultans of Swing by Dire Straits, but not in the way you might expect. Rather than a note-for-note tutorial, this one's about mining the tune for ideas and concepts you can take and use in your own playing: triads, arpeggios, double-stops, country bends, chord-tone soloing, the lot.

This is, to the best of my knowledge, the longest video I've ever put out at around 50 minutes, and I've also really gone to town on the tab - 9 pages of it, which you'll find below.

Whilst some of this is undoubtedly geared towards more advanced players, there's plenty here for guitarists of every level - the underlying ideas are things you can make use of however far along you are.

Hope you enjoy it!

-Adrian

How Sultans of Swing Can Make You a Better Guitarist

Sultans of Swing by Dire Straits is a fretboard masterclass: triads, arpeggios, double-stops, country bends, and chord-tone soloing - it's all in there. Rather than a note-for-note tutorial, this video breaks down the concepts behind Mark Knopfler's playing and shows how to take them, reshape them, and use them in your own guitar parts, fills, and solos. This one of the most in-depth videos on my channel, covering a ton of ground across rhythm parts, fills, and soloing. Hope you enjoy it. The older you get the cooler Dire Straits become.

Very true - as a young punk fan and indie kid it was of course compulsory to hate bands like Dire Straits, but they've got some great tunes and not Knopfler's undoubtedly an incredible player. Whilst I was researching this video, I came across a piece sultans of swing, which compared into the Velvet Underground, and compared his vocal delivery to Lou reed, which you can kind of hear!

Could it be that these are the wrong documents? The PDF is a scan and the .gp doesn’t contain tabs. No complaint, just a question.

anyonecanplayguitar

ah yes looks like the tab is a transcription rather than my tab - I grabbed the wrong file. I'll upload the correct file now. The .gp seems to work though.

I can’t wait to delve into this lesson!! Many thanks!

Thanks Adrian, best song all the times

One of my (pretty close to the top) favourite songs ... so THANK YOU Adrian!

Would love if you did “Brothers in Arms” sometime… another gem

John Olenski

Thanks for the breakdown of this classic tune.

Glen Maupin

I memorized this song from a tab (took forever) but now I understand it as it relates to the chords making it easier to remember. Thanks for another great lesson.

Maggie Osterberg

Once again, you make a vid about one of my favorite musicians playing a favorite piece of music!

Really enjoyed this. The song has been too over played for me but the ideas and tips in this lesson are ace

Nice way of using this great song to expand our knowledge. One triads song I'd like to hear picked apart is World Party's Put The Message In The Box where the main riff is made up of descending triads.

This is really a fantastic look at the concepts Adrian and perfectly suited to the current stage of my guitar journey. The effort is much appreciated!! 🤩

Another awesome lesson! Mind doing Panic in Detroit?

Great lesson by the Shmaltziest Pommy Rock band this side of Graham Parker and the Rumour! Listening back to early Dire Straights, they were actually more of a Pommy 'neo-Americana' type band and stole alot from 70s Lou Reed (talky lyrics, soulful/bluesy licks)!!

MuswellMan

Extraordinary. Mark Knopfler is no slouch either.
