This week I wanted to look at a proper classic: Love in Vain as played by the Rolling Stones. It contains some beautiful acoustic work from Keith Richards, and I believe he also played the slide guitar part. Here's a link to the video:

Tabs can be found below. I've written out 3 choruses of the acoustic part note-for-note from the record. After that it really just repeats with a few minor variations. And I've also written out the slide part as I play it in the performance the top of the video.

Hope you enjoy it.

Speak next week,

Adrian

Would love to see you do more Country / Blues Stones…

Tom

Maybe this might be an idea: why not compare Honky Tonk Women (electric open G) to Country Honk (standard acoustic) to learn something about the use of open G tuning?

CC

Wow, such a great choice Adrian! I will definitely be putting some time in on this one. Just lovely. Have a great weekend 🤠

Jas

Oooh I'm just starting with a different track on that album (yes, that one) and thinking of using slide for the distorted harmonica part. Being a complete noob at slide (and guitar in general) this has helped get my bearings especially with staying in standard tuning!

Ian Loriggio

This is great anI have been learning this for a couple of weeks and now the master has a great lesson :) thanks Adrian

Thomas Wilkinson

Thanks Adrian, was listening to Let it Bleed this morning and thinking I’d like to play this version.

Michael J. Ricciuti

Great selection, Adrian! There are a few stones’ songs (including this one) that I have wanted to try for a long time now. Thanks

Jeff Sims

There are some guitarists that you know are great guitarists but you forget why they are such great guitarists. Listening to Adrian's breakdown, thinking 'wow, they're some really nice guitar parts' and being sort of surprised how good they were. It was like ... oh yeah, its Keith Richards...

Brian Scott

Love this choice of song Adrian, can't wait to dig in!

David Strickett

awesome Adrian, love the song and really enjoyed learning it, hope you do some more stones stuff

anyonecanplayguitar

Thanks David. Yes, this was a fun lesson for me to put together, and I'm definitely going to consider doing some more Stones.

anyonecanplayguitar

That's a good way of putting it Jeff. Keith just has the ability to come up with perfect parts, without unnecessary shoeing off or guitar heroics.

Glad you found this helpful Jas! I think this is a great song to work on if you want to start getting into slide playing. If you've not already seen it, do also check out the video I did a few weeks back on simple, melodic slide parts.

Jas

Sounds ideal but I couldn't find it. Grateful if you could post the link. Thanks Adrian. My YT skills are as bad as my guitar ones

Ian Hollister

just wanted to suggest Jolene as a song to cover. Mostly the fingerpicking of the original Dolly Parton version but contrasting with the White Stripes version as well might be cool

anyonecanplayguitar

Yes, I'm on the lookout for interesting fingerpicking pieces and this could be great! Will certainly consider doing something on Jolene!
