Hello all,

In this video I'm talking about how I understand the fretboard using the CAGED system Too often people learn about CAGED and it remains this abstract concept that never leads onto making actual music. One solution to this is to work on developing some vocabulary and musical ideas to draw upon in each zone of the fretboard. Here's the link -

And you can find the tabs below. One PDF is for the licks, the other is for my improvisation at the start of the video.

Hope some of you  find this useful.

Speak next week,

Adrian

Do they usually work on your phone? I tend to use the desktop Guitar Pro App and haven't tested the files on the mobile version. Will look into it if there's an issue though.

Doesn't matter Adrian because the pdf versions are fine......and while I'm here how about a lesson on Another Girl Another Planet (or have you done that one?) Or...... Babylon's burning Or...... something funky like Le Freak Or...... something challenging like Oblivious by Aztec Camera or even Walk out to Winter Or.....In a Big Country...Big Country Or.... a Prefab Sprout no. Faron Young, Appetite, whatever. Anyway, just some ideas. Loving your work- you've helped me enormously. A thousand thanks, whatever you choose as your next lesson.

Ive been teaching guitar for 20 years without introducing the caged system to students. I use triads for them to associate scales and chord tones and note memorization. This concept you have worked out appeals to me and im going to find good use for it. Thanks for sharing your skills Adrian.

Thanks David. Yes, I'm sure when I was learning to play the CAGED system as such wasn't 'a thing', or it certainly wasn't called CAGED. For me though it's a very useful concept. Of course note memorisation, triads, intervals on the fretboard are all very important too, as an alternative to in addition to CAGED. Maybe a video comparing CAGED with other concepts of understanding the fretboard would be interesting, with the pros and cons of each approach?!

Some excellent ideas there John - thanks! I have done Another Girl - it was a long time ago so it's not on here, but you should find it if you search my website or YT channel. I think I also covered the Le Freak riff in a lesson I did on Nile Rodgers' greatest riffs. I will make a note of your other suggestions and perhaps one to two lessons will develop from them. Thanks again!

I second In A Big Country. That's a really well written, musically unique song that is (despite being a hit) often overlooked,
