I distinctly remember hearing about the truck dragging story in the news. I think this story got a little bit more coverage where I lived (NE Kansas) because there was a lot of hate group activity in this part of the country. It was not that long after the OKC bombing, after all. Back then, I think people were a little bit more shocked by it. You didn't hear people in mainstream media defending this murder. Nowadays, CNN would be giving takes from both sides. Although tbf, I think they did do a both sides for Rodney King. So it's not like news media fell from lofty heights.

Re: the Kobe "playing from behind" joke, there is a basketball reference that works there, but it def hasn't ever been said about Kobe Bryant.

That's exactly what he's referencing but Kobe wasn't specifically known for this (Robert Horry and Derek fisher hit big shots in the playoffs for the lakers). And this ep aired mere months after the lakers lost in 5 games to the pistons so it was like the opposite of topical in 2004.
