I was delighted at how positively y’all regarded Lulu in my last comic! :3 But for all her fierce protectiveness and maternal warmth, our dear Lulu has some serious flaws, and these flaws had a profound impact on her son Tibbs.

Lulu is a highly permissive parent…..to the point she is a full-blown enabler. Much of her mothering is driven by guilt- guilt that her son doesn’t have a father, and that they don’t have much money, and that she has to be away at work far more than she’d like to be. So she spoils Tibbs as best as she can, and sets very few rules. Somehow, despite growing up with little supervision or guidance, Tibbs grows into a bright, gifted piglet, reading well above grade level and bringing home report cards that could make Lulu weep for joy. To Lulu, her baby boy is absolutely perfect, in her view he hung the moon and stars. He’s such an easy, good little kid. Right up until he isn’t.

Lulu is enamored by her son, but she doesn't truly know him. She has an idea in her head of her teeny, precocious, precious little piglet…..and she rejects any word to the contrary. This denial worsens as Tibbs grows into an awkward and depressed teenager, and he begins to struggle in school, struggle to make friends. Lulu, burdened by her own workload and stress, cheerily turns a blind eye to her son’s issues. Tibbs isn't "moody", he's just thoughtful! His grades aren’t “slipping”, school just isn't serving his unique skill set properly! Lulu had a tough time in school too!

Lulu is unequipped to help her son, or even acknowledge that he needs help. But as Tibbs gets older, he becomes withdrawn and sullen. Doesn’t smile anymore. When Lulu meets and begins dating Mona, a shy, kindly history teacher, she hopes Tibbs will welcome the new potential parental figure, and perhaps find a friend in Mona’s son Teddy. Lulu is stunned when her once sweet Tibbs reacts with outright hostility, wanting nothing to do with either Mona or Teddy.

Tibbs, you see, has been slowly harboring resentment for his mother, who has so often been absent- or worse, dismissive-  when he needed her. Tibbs feels that Lulu abandoned him the second he stopped being a docile little piglet, and he’s furious that she’s now devoting her time and energy to this “new family”. Tibbs doesn’t want a stepmother or stepbrother, he wants Lulu. And yet he cannot bear to be around her, so he pushes her away.

The worse Tibbs gets, the harder guilt eats at Lulu. She makes excuses for his behavior and attitude, to Mona, to Teddy, to herself. Tibbs Is just…..going through some growing pains, that’s all. Lulu pretends not to notice him coming home smelling like cigarette smoke and axel grease. These are just growing pains. It’s tough for a young boar without a father figure. He’ll come around….no matter what, she trusts her baby boy to do the right thing.

When boars come of age, they experience a dramatic spike in testerone. They gain muscle mass, their tusks grow sharp and long, and they begin having annual rut seasons, which induce heightened aggression and libido. 19 year old Tibbs, deep in his first rut season, wants to do nothing more than eat, bulk, and fuck, heavy emphasis on the last one. And so he meets Joan, a playful 22-year old red river sow with a brain for mechanics and a taste for trouble.

Joan has a warm laugh and a mean sense of humor, but never too mean. She's the first person to really see Thibodeaux, flaws and strengths. She always says exactly what she means, her praise for him is never phony (like Lulu) or pitying (like Mona). Tibbs is drawn to her, deeply so, and they develop an easy friendship. There's little Tibbs wouldn't do for Joan, especially when she agrees to teach him all about his true first love- motorcycles.

Joan, having inherited a delipidated auto repair shop from her father, slyly turns it into a chop shop- a business that breaks down stolen and scavenged cars for parts. Beforehand, she'd been counting on family to do the necessary car theft, but with Tibbs around she feels emboldened to steal cars and parts with him. Why should only rich people get to have nice things?, she asks Tibbs. Why should he bust his tail working some dead end job to afford a piece of crap bike when she can build him a beautiful custom chopper? Together, they can build an empire. And together, with Joan, Tibbs feels like he's home, for the first time in a very long time.

And so, despite his family's protests, Tibbs drops out of school to follow Joan. To hell and back.

I can't tell if I'm more obsessed with Mo's design or Jo's 😭😭😭💖💖💖 Which is to say, I already adore Tibb and Lulu too much for words, and seeing other players in their stories is so rewarding.

Silverwinds

I love how much you’re fleshing out Perry, Tibbs, and their families!!

Syd D.

BAD BOYS BAD BOYS I am in love with Joan.

Biscuit

I clicked so fast on this post I didn’t even give Patreon time to load the when I wanted a second read! So how did Tibbs and Jo end? Can I assume for as much as Tibbs thought that Jo saw him that the entire relationship was very emotionally driven and ended bitterly as Tibbs came around to working on those issues? Did Jo’s chop shop ever make it off the ground? I’m really interested on how she’s doing now. You really have a talent for giving us attached. The characters in one post. I love it ♥️

riot

god i am so heart broken for tibbs poor baby 😭 and jo is so cool! im so glad tibbs found someone who gets him. im so curious and looking forward to learning about their relationship. does tibbs get busted stealing? how to his and jos friend/relationship end? do they still keep in contact? im so excited for these guys!

lopoddity

Thanks so much! :D “Did Jo’s chop shop ever make it off the ground” Operating a chop shop is a third degree felony, so yes, but also, no. :)

mirarevias

Oh NO. You just cemented Tibbs as one of my all time faves entirely with this, now. He was already, but this takes the cake. I love how you've tackled difficult family dynamics and relationships over the years, and seeing them broken down into these illustrations (which are VERY lovely to look at, precious gangly teen Tibbs holds my whole heart and I especially love the soft style of the one of Tibbs and Joan when they're in bed first talking about making him the bike). God, it inspires me. My heart aches for Tibbs, it isn't often you see people examine this kind of relationship between an overly-lax parent and a struggling, guideless child, and the results of that. Assumedly from the wedding period we can see that Tibbs seems to have made amends at least with his mother and Teddy, but I imagine for a good space of time there he potentially wasn't on speaking terms with any of them. I wonder what the breaking point was for him? I phrase it like so just because it seems that by the time he meets Perry, he's "calmed down" (or has at least become more reserved) and at that point he's a school janitor, so memory serves, with Joan assumedly no longer in the picture by this point, either. I assume that his risky and felonious behavior with Joan eventually caught up with him, and possibly served both jail/prison time and a reality check? Also, thank you for your kindness on the previous post. I haven't really taken a day yet, as you suggested, but I am doing better! I DID go and get two of my favorite ube lattes and drink them back to back today, though. A step in the better direction. Also SORRY this comment got really, REALLY long 😅

Paladin

Oh my gosh, I just love your comics and art in general. The second one across (horizontally) hits so hard for me. Many times people don't realize that someone can struggle mentally whatever their living situation. Thanks for bringing attention to it.

PrincessMuffinArt

Aww, Tibbs. So sad to hear he went through all that. :( I wonder if he and Joan remain friends or was it that rough of a breakup before Perry came into his life.

mirarevias

I ALSO SECOND THIS I wonder if they're still friends or not 🥺

knickknacks

WOOO TIBBS BACKSTORY!! LET'S GO I'm like. very sleepy right now, enough so that I don't know how coherent my thoughts will be, but just. GUH. The pain of relationships where it's like. they love each other so much. Lulu loves Tibbs and Tibbs loves Lulu. But Lulu has also deeply hurt Tibbs, even unintentionally, and Tibbs' resentment makes so much *sense* because. Being hurt by your mother and also knowing she has these glowing expectations/this adoring picture of you. And feeling like he is not living up to it or not meeting her expectations and. loving her and wanting to be as good as she thinks he is but also she doesn't KNOW him. She has her new girlfriend and her new son and doesn't realize how alienating that is for him... What a tangled mess. I love them. gah It makes me happy to see that in the present day it seems like they've got a much improved/healed relationship. But goodness me will the road to get there be rough. I'm strapping myself in in preparation for the ride. Very very interested to see how Tibbs and Joan fare, and how Tibbs eventually comes to rebuild bridges with his family- or, in the case of Mona and Teddy, actually develop a relationship with them, a second time around. These are all of my thoughts at present. and now it very much is time for bed :') so very excited to see more about these guys!

WAr

Yesssss I’m so stoked for this Tibbs lore!! I’m positively intrigued as to how this plays out, since Tibbs definitely doesn’t hotwire cars or run a chop shop anymore. I feel for Lulu because I do understand her, while also acknowledging that she was in the wrong with her parenting style. I wonder if Joan is somehow connected to Gino too? Perhaps later down the line? The possibilities are endless and I’m so excited to see moooooore!! :D. I guess this is slightly unrelated to tibbs (I don’t want to ask too many questions since I’m sure we’ll be getting more info on him later!) but does Teddy have many friends at this time? I guess I’m wondering if Teddy was hoping to have a real brother and best friend in Tibbs or if he was doing pretty well at this age with friends and didn’t feel like he necessarily needed the relationship with tibbs to work out.

m0nk3y_m4n

I see in the last picture that Tibbs got himself a tattoo; how do tattoos work in the world of fuzzbutts for animals that have a layer of fur that grows over the skin?

lopoddity

Furryfolk just shave the area they’d like to get tattooed, and then continue keeping the area shaved to show off the tattoo. The downside of this is that upkeep can be annoying, but one positive is that if the tattoo is no longer desired, rather than pay for pricey laser removal, one can just let the fur regrow to conceal the tattoo. An alternative to tattoos is branding, where a design is pressed into the flesh with a red-hot iron. Brands require no shaving/upkeep and are thus valued for their permanence, but they also hurt a LOT more than tattoos and take weeks to heal. Tibbs considers it very lucky he opted for a tattoo instead of a brand, as an adult he considers his dumb bike chain tatt pretty embarrassing, he’s glad he can hide it under his fur.

Doglover502

I love gangly ass 14 year old Tibbs. I wanna protect him Also shoot I felt that. I had a similar school situation too with grades slipping in high school from depression. It's really weird (in a hard sad way) knowing your parents love you, but they also messed you up and didn't get you the help you needed back then

StarrySharks

I'm both curious and an absolute wreck omg 🥹 Firstly, oh god I relate to bits of Tibbs' past/relationship with his mom so hard in my own with mine that it genuinely brings me to tears to see it. Secondly, goodness I'm so in love with Joan its not even funny she's so cool, her design, her attitude, everything about her is just 😍 Also lastly, from Lulu's first intro "Lulu owns a motorcycle repair shop and is the one who refurbished/customized Tibbs' much-beloved vintage motorcycle, Jolene." Would Jolene happen to be the one Joan builds Tibbs'...or a different one? 👀

Violetattack

Ough Lulu's earnest but mishandled love breaks me,,, Tibbs reminds me a lot of the way I was in school (struggling with ADHD/depression). Is Tibbs neurodivergent? I realize you allude to him being neurodivergent but I'm curious if he has ADHD, at the very least I resonate w him and his school experience edit: Lulu in my mind def sounds like KO's mom from OK KO- I think it's because they both call their son "peanut" but they have the same voice and energy in my head ^^;;

nighthawk0913

Just curious, is Tibbs bi/pan rather than gay since he seems to have kind of a thing going with Joan? Or was he repressing when he was young?

Angsty Ram

Now, you see, I’m just imaging for whatever reason years later he’d need to save that area again. I can really hear Perry at the top of his lungs “ YOU HAVE A TATTOO???!! “

Murkydepths

Aaaaa I was not expecting THIS much follow-up 8D I think this is my favourite character exploration you've done. I love young Tibbs, the journey he's on. Relate hard to that awkward teen phase, wish I'd had as good a glow up as him.

Heartsy

God the drawing of lulu and tibbs arguing about tibbs dropping out really hits close to home for me, I’ve always been viewed as bright, smart, always good at exams by the adults in my life when I was his age, but a significant amount of undiagnosed neurodivergence and a spike in difficulty made it hard to even start any kind of long form writings or revise/study for anything in school, and it’s so much easier to give up than try harder at something you were once good at (and maybe even enjoyed) and put your effort into something your good at now which was art and drawing for me and seemingly mechanics and motorcycles for tibbs. I might’ve felt like dropping out of it was really an option in England the way it seems to be on America, even though there’s nothing worse than *knowing* your failing and disappointing a parental figure or figures you know love you with absolutely everything in their hearts. In the end sometimes it feels better to fail knowingly rather than fail after giving it your absolute best try

Ventia

Thibs story truly resonates with me, I have had the chance of not having as much hardships as him, but undiagnosed ADHD and depression in highschool with parents completely unable to even understand what I was saying to them and dealing with, and answering me word for word what Lulu is saying truly hits hard. I'm so glad Thibs will find his happy place with Perry in the end and reconcile with his family 😊

marsh_beast

You’ve articulated this experience beautifully, and even though it probably wasn’t your intention, it’s nice to be validated and know I wasn’t the only one who went through this. Thank you :)

marsh_beast

Now I’m curious as to how Tibbs and Teddy became friends- because wow, rough start. I don’t blame Tibbs for resenting his ‘golden-child’ stepbrother, it must have felt like Lulu was trading him in for a more successful child.

FaeMoona

im curious on how things end with joan, shes absolutely adorable. Despite her leading Tibbs away from Lulu she doesnt seem like a bad person. more of a rowdy but a kindred spirit that tibbs found when he needed one most. the felonies were perhaps a bit much and maybe they arent suitable partners but she seems like a genuine friend to him. i cant wait to see what happens next <3

Bigsmile

Jesus Christ, oh God, that 'these are the best years' statement is damn near word for word what my dad told me when I went to Highschool. I'm still mad at that giant lie

lopoddity

Thank you! Honestly, teen Teddy strikes me as kind of a Milhouse type. Sheltered, nerdy, enthusiastic in a way people can find off-putting (ie "cringe"), aaaaand a bit full of himself. Not exactly popular. Teddy actually was looking forward to befriending Tibbs and as an only child, he's always wanted a sibling. But he came in a little too hot with "let's be brothers AND besties!" at an already bad time in Tibbs' life, so Tibbs mostly sees him as an annoying dweeb. Teddy is hurt by this and will "hmmph! Well I never! >:( " when Tibbs is rude to him, but truth is he thinks Tibbs is pretty cool (if I bit scary), and never stops vying for his attention and approval, just like a real little brother.

lopoddity

It's nice to hear the story is relatable. :3 I had a similar experience growing up, and I poured a lot of my experiences into Tibbs' story. It's so conflicting to have parents that try their best, but it's just not enough. :/

lopoddity

Thank you! I think I'm gonna retcon Lulu owning a bike repair shop. Instead she's a burgeoning restauranteur. Tibbs does still get his bike Jolene, but not til he's older. His first chopper, the one Joan builds, is named Destiny.

lopoddity

I took "peanut" from Carol and KO! :D To me Lulu sounds like a mashup of Carol and Betty Deville from Rugrats. Loud and almost aggressively friendly. To answer your question, I didn’t set out to make Tibbs have ADHD, buuuuut I did dump my own life experiences into him. I was a troubled teen struggling with depression, anxiety, and undiagnosed ADHD. My parents, like Lulu, were woefully unequipped to provide the help I needed, or even acknowledge that I needed help. My grades tanked, I'm talking straight Fs and Ds. I flunked Algebra twice, I was almost held back a year, school made me feel SO worthless and stupid. I developed antisocial behaviors like lying , stealing, vandalizing, and shoplifting. I got VERY lucky that I happened into some very kind and patient teachers that made learning possible, and eventually I made friends and got back on the honor roll and got a degree and a job and whatnot. But I worry what road I might’ve gone down if I hadn’t gotten the help I needed, so I poured those feelings into Tibbs. And I suppose since I am an individual with ADHD, this has a side effect of making Tibbs seem affected by it as well. Again, I didn’t set out to do that, but it's fine if you wanna interpret him that way. :3

lopoddity

Tibbs is bisexual. I left it out cuz I'd already done SO many Tibbs drawings here, but when he was around 15, he developed a crush on a male classmate. The classmate found out and stopped speaking to Tibbs. Tibbs carried a lot of shame and heartbreak over the rejection for a while, and quietly decided if he ever did pursue a partner, he'd be better off going for a woman.

lopoddity

This much follow-up? Brother I had to stop myself from adding even more. XD I could write/draw a TON about familial neglect and troubled teens. Glad you enjoy it!

lopoddity

Painfully relatable. :( Thank you for your comment, I loved reading your thoughts!

Bluerock66

So, does he eventually get caught? If so, how much trouble does he get in.

Violetattack

Good to know !!! It's funny (and depressing) that that experience is unfortunately common,,, I got held back 3 years (part of that was covid related but I digress), by the time I graduated most of my friends were college sophomores or higher. It's so incredibly demoralizing, especially when your parents can't seem to understand that the problem *is* who you are, and no amount of external pressure will change that. Cue depressing fist-bump of solidarity !!

nighthawk0913

With Tibb's motorcycle that he gets from Joan, is it a different one to the one he has when he's with Perry? If not, what happened to it?

Gleeman and Artist

Oof I really feel for Tibbs and Lulu here. My life did not end up lookin like tibbs (mostly because of religion which fucked me up in a different way, but we don't have time to unpack all that lol). I definitely had parents who could not understand any of my neurodivergent struggles and couldn't support me emotionally at all. My dad was a "put all that on god" guy and mom was a "suck it up" kinda lady. I managed to do well in high school, but college was much harder. And my parents were paying for it, so they got extra mad when I failed something. Anyway, I love all these characters and I'm excited to see where Tibbs story goes. I def wanna see Joan again, too. She's great!

AsTheJayFlies

Lop answered in another comment on this post that the motorcycle joan builds tibbs is a different one than he has when he starts dating perry - his first one is named destiny while his newer one is named jolene. I too am curious what happened to destiny 👀 i expect we’ll find out at some point

lopoddity

Haaaaa....I went through something similar. I suppose my parents were busy with their jobs and bills, but they were so....not-proactive when it came to my struggles. My school provided an online gradebook for parents to monitor their kids' academic progress, but my parents never checked it. Never made sure I was doing my homework, never tried to place me in tutoring, never asked if I was okay. And yet, every time report cards rolled out, they acted SO flabberghasted and furious that I had straight Fs, as though that hadn't been the case for years. They'd then come up with these elaborate and violent punishments, and they'd take away TV and internet, cancel my birthday, no christmas presents for me, etc. But then things would go back to business as usual, and they'd act oblivious to my school struggles until the next report card. They were only ever REACTIVE, never proactive. I remember during the time it looked like I might get held back a year, we went to church and my parent shoved me forward and told me to go pray at the altar that I would pass into the 9th grade. And that was the first time it really hit me that my parents really had no idea what they were doing. :/ Beg God to help me scrape by with a D? Even if I believed in god, why would he change the low grades that I EARNED? Did they want me to ask god to help me cheat the system...? How was that any less absurd than enrolling me in a little afterschool tutoring? I'm a teacher, and I actually just got my youth mental health aid certificate yesterday, I got trained in how to reach out to talk to struggling kids and learned how having even ONE caring, supportive adult in their life can save someone. They taught us that when a kid starts to struggle in school, the first step is to calmly ask them what's going on, then simply LISTEN without judging or condemning. Then you reassure the kid and encourage them toward sources of support (ie. tutoring, remedial classes, etc). My parents did not do this, could not do this, because no one had ever done it for THEM. I think it genuinely pained them to be truly vulnerable or supportive, I think they felt that admitting that I had a problem was shameful somehow. So they buried their heads in the sand, and came up with solutions like begging the christian god to change my algebra grade. Lulu’s denial is inspired by my parents, especially her insisting that Tibbs cannot possibly be depressed. :/

Gleeman and Artist

I'm sorry you had to go through that. Tbh I feel like a lot of boomer parents just do that cause it's how they got by in life. I'm glad you're doing something to actually help your kids though. Stuff like that makes all the different. Ah yes the Christian experience of getting shoved up at the alter whenever you have a real problem. That definitely happened for me whenever the depression was bad and everyone would pray that it would magically go away. Unfortunately that is not how mental illness works. My dad sticks his head in the sand for literally every problem he's ever had. u-u I'm lucky cause my mom also deals with depression so she at least took that seriously and got me a therapist. There's something very cathartic about putting all that bad stuff you went through in a story. I've def done it with all my religion truama. Just writer/artist things I guess haha

owlcoholik

I stand corrected: it’s lulu who needs a Costco membership. That would definitely fix all the issues you’ve laid out here For real tho: need more deets on Joan…why is she the way she is? I also think it’s super interesting she’s more than a lil similar to Tibb’s mom: same hair color, similar personality, both pigs. I feel like the real end to all of this is Tibbs seeing both of them next to each other and realizing oh shit. I have mommy issues. And they just never get over that. The crime stuff is all a red herring (source: trust me on this one)

lopoddity

Hello, My name is Thibodeaux and I feel a sudden, profound connection with this older sow, who is loud and warm and playful and provides guidance and attention and approval that make me feel good about myself, also I do not have mommy issues and am Very Normal (….My name is future Tibbs, I’ve worked through all my mommy issues and am now attracted to the small lynx teacher who is tutoring me to earn my GED, I am definitely not drawn to him because he is warm and friendly and is a very present and emotionally available male pseudo-authority figure that is gentle yet firm when needed and makes me feel good about myself, i do not have daddy issues and am again, Very Normal) In all seriousness, I did intend for Joan and Lulu to be similar, but I may have overdone it a bit. I wanted the juxtaposition of Lulu seeing Tibbs as a little kid, compared to Joan who sees him as a grown boar brimming with potential. Psychologically speaking, people find comfort in what is familiar to them. Humans internalize the dominant form of parental attachment style in our lives, and this psychosocial conditioning can become the subconscious blueprint in how we select our future partners. Imprinting and attachment theory can explain why people with abusive or toxic parents may routinely seek/retain partners with similar negative qualities. Joan subconsciously reminds Tibbs of Lulu…which means he’s willing to often overlook her glaring faults. Joan, like Tibbs, was raised by an inattentive single parent, except she had the herculean task of raising her many younger siblings and keeping the lights on in their tiny house. From an early age she had to take on many different odd jobs, some of which included less-than-legal automotive ventures through her extended family. Once she’s an adult, Joan is determined to live her life the way SHE wants, to finally have all the fun and freedom she wants, but because she never had anybody to model moderation, she can be quite reckless and devil-may-care, to a much greater extent than Lulu, and she has (unwittingly) playfully pressured Tibbs into doing things he’s not always comfortable with. Joan is also a drop-out and sees crime as her only real option in life. What else is she gonna do to make money? Work some shitty retail job, under some shitty power tripping handsy boss? Nah, she’s been there, done that. She feels better off on her own, making good money and being her OWN boss. So what if it’s illegal? Wasn’t illegal for her mom’s shitheel landlord to keep jacking up the rent, wasn’t illegal for her last boss to deny her enough hours to get full time benefits, wasn’t illegal for the cops to try to arrest her last time she was homeless. Joan doesn’t care about legality, to her she’s just getting one over on the man.

cactus bastrop

with lulu insisting that these are the best years of tibbs’ life, i find myself wondering what lulu’s high school experience was like… and also how old she was when she had tibbs, lol

lopoddity

I never settled on a specific age, but she was definitely way too young, somewhere around 17-20. She was impregnated by a married boar more than twice her age who preyed on her naivety and innocent infatuation. Lulu doesn't like to talk about it and has steered clear of men ever since. :/

cactus bastrop

awww poor lu 😭 i can definitely see that factoring into her attitude towards tibbs—wanting your kid to have the best teenagedom possible because you yourself were forced to grow up too quickly, and also—YOUR teen years sucked because you had a kid to raise, and obviously tibbs doesnt. he should be living it up, shouldnt he? many, many layers to dysfunction, lmao

Bigsmile

Yknow, I'm not saying Joan is right. But I respect the "Fuck the man" mentality she got.... Wish she didn't drag babby Tibbs I to crime though

Murkydepths

I think young Tibbs is now my favourite character of yours, I cannot get enough of him <3

Res Hound

Ooooh, I like the development for Teddy! Are he and Lune still friends?

nighthawk0913

What ends up happening to Joan? Operating a chop shop is a felony, so does she get arrested?

lopoddity

She gets arrested, same as Tibbs. But unlike Tibbs, she doesn't get convicted. A mysterious force intervenes on her behalf. I wonder who? (Hint: it's Gio).

nighthawk0913

Oh, I didn't know she was involved with Gio's mob. Will we see what she gets up to now?

Ren

A year late but I've been going through old posts. Damn that had to be rough. Was Tibbs bitter/resentful towards Joann after this or in fact grateful she got to get away. Because as much as she led him down this path, she was the first person to really see him. He was also an adult and he made his choices. Still that has got to hurt a bit. Did they keep in any contact after this?
