-Some sketches exploring Bob and Kathleen’s relationship, particularly the couple years they stayed cohabitating after the divorce. They’re too familiar with each each other to not be honest to one another, they enjoy an easy and comfortable friendship. Kathleen straddles the line between cool and dorky, just a big goofy beaver woman (buy another bra already dumbass)

-A doodle set in the present day. Toffee spent a painfully long chunk of his life caring way too much about his father’s opinion, so he’s pretty happy to finally be in a place where he can tell his pop to eat shit (read: politely but firmly ask him to leave)

three thousand spiders wearing a trenchcoat

I love the relationship between Bob and Kathy!! I’m always happy to see relationships between exes/divorcees where they can still be friends and get along, and Bob and Kathy’s friendship is so wholesome

HHNNGHNN DGKADJHK SFJ GIKLLLKL I LOVE THEM. I LOVE THEM, I LOVE THEM, I LOVE THEM. *cough* Excuse me. Three dynamics are so engaging and great! I can't overstate how perfect your redesign for Toffee is. He was always lovely, but the scruff added just the right amount of character. I am living for these sketches of him, Bob, and their satellite peeps! It's fun to see ol pastor pop again. For some reason, the cocker spaniel thing just WORKS. AND KATHY. 💘💘💘 Just... *chefs kiss* What a woman!

Angsty Ram

I already love Kathy and relate on a hard level (for real, ya might have more than one bra but there is only truly one) I have no idea how you are capable of making Merry look bald while having fur but I fully believe if this man was human he’d have the most depressing hairline imaginable

Kenzie Leong

Oh I FEEL Kathy in this moment, sometimes even if you have multiple bras you still have that one workhorse bra that you use all the time because none of the others feel right. Inwardly shrieking at the bible thumper just flat out saying the quiet part with his full chest. Like he doesn't even say that the charities are immoral for being pro-whatever, his problem is that donating to them is spineless and insipid.

Violetattack

ooooh are toffee and his father still on speaking terms??? I kind of assumed they mutually didn't talk at all but like,, does his dad still show up (if only to insult him)???

WAr

Do Bob and Kathy ever feel a need to build a dam ?

lopoddity

Their dam-building instinct manifested as a constant need to do home repairs and renovation. It's part of the reason they stayed together for years after divorcing, they put a LOT of love and work into their home.

WAr

That makes sense with Bob working construction! One more lore question— would beavers and other semi aquatic animals have more water stuff in their home or would that just manifest as taking very long showers or something lol?

lopoddity

Kinda, but not really. Merry is getting older and growing increasingly concerned about who is going to manage his estate when he’s gone. Honey was supposed to marry an upstanding gentleman and start her own family that he could bequeath his fortune to, but his daughter seems increasingly flighty and addle-brained lately, going on and on about this “lesbianism” he hoped was just a phase. Merry needs a backup plan, so he sets his sights on his original heir, Toffee. Toffee is, after all, a church leader himself and very, very educated. Merry hoped he and his mostly estranged elder son could come to terms, but sin and wickedness obliviously have their claws deep in poor Toffee. His poor, foolish son, engaged in debauchery with a RAT. It’s enough to make Merry seethe, but fortunately the church says to forgive sinners. He forgives Toffee, and will be praying for his son to find the light soon (and stop being such a damned embarrassment already). Toffee can be a bit spineless around his dad and has trouble standing up for himself when Merry criticizes him. However, he draws the line at Merry attacking his siblings or his husband. He snaps back here because Merry insulted Bob. Secretly Toffee does still care what his father thinks of him, being called a disappointment stings.

Toffee about bob: "if he is not the word of God, then God never spoke"

lopoddity

Private water features are expensive to build and maintain. Bob and Kathleen could have probably afforded a small backyard pool, but they preferred to swim at the local creek. Cities in FB have large public water features (ponds, pools, fountains), specifically designed for use by semi aquatic animals. Kathleen does take too damn long in the shower though, Bob complained about it a lot when they were together, lol

lopoddity

Oh yes, Merry thinks funding charities and other social services is stupid (which is where Honey gets her anti-welfare stance). To him, money is best spent on church donations, so that he can expand his reach and bring the word of god to more people. This is his mission, it’s the only thing that matters. People don’t need hand-outs, they need faith! Trust in the good word and the rest will follow, says Merry- and conveniently, so too will follow Merry getting to purchase another luxurious vintage car.

Kenzie Leong

Oh wow he sucks even more than I thought, which is saying something! The conservative perspective I tend to hear more about is that charities and private philanthropy are supposed to be the replacement for government-funded and regulated social services, so it gets left up to people's personal choices and private contributions instead of Giving My Tax Dollars To The Riffraff. Did not even occur to me that some people would think neither private charities nor government-funded services should exist, but it also does not surprise me.

lopoddity

Yes. Similarly to Honey, Merry exists in a bubble of privilege and wealth. He gets defensive if this is questioned, he worked hard to get everything he has! Other people just aren’t working hard enough! As he is insulated from the realities of the working poor, he has no concept of their struggles. He feels a condescending sort of pity for the more “upstanding” poor (ie. those “uplifting” news stories about children selling lemonade to pay for a parent’s medical treatments, or an old man still working his retail job at age 85) and outright contempt for those that seek to challenge the system and demand living wages. Lazy upstarts just need to work harder. He’s angry at Toffee giving his money away because he thinks poor people will simply abuse it, spending it on drugs and liquor and whatnot. Perhaps there exists a shred of fatherly instinct in Merry that worries his son’s foolish bleeding heart being exploited, but mostly he’s a stubborn old control freak angry his son isn’t making the same choices he would.

lopoddity

After years of depression and drinking and vitriol and self-loathing and doubt and a long, uncertain journey toward healing, Toffee wakes up wrapped in Bob’s strong arms and listens to him softly snoring and thinks yes, heaven is real and it’s found in other people

cactus bastrop

lmao at the fact that i know so many people Like This but also makes me wonder about merry's upbringing himself. i'm assuming he had SOME degree of upward economic mobility, though in my experience the kind of people that spout that sort of nonsense have never been truly dirt poor themselves, but rather maybe made the leap from middle to upper class, hence believing in the "i worked hard" bootstraps rhetoric. or maybe he's been an upper crust southern jackass from birth! either are unbearably annoying to be around

Bigsmile

A "RAT"?!? Someone suplex this old man!..... EDIT: Just remembered rats are also regular folks in this setting.... 😬 oops

Bigsmile

Damn it, that hit me in my feels organ 🥲

I'm waiting for the moment Merry realizes all his kids have essentially disowned him and that he has nothing. However I feel like Honey woild try to keep in contact with her dad but it'd get to the point she'd have to cut contact with him. Probably with her partner telling her it's better she does it.

AsTheJayFlies

something something ive only felt religion when ive lied with you

Loving all this I love this family’s lore 😭

Saba Saeidi

hes just jealous that you got your mamas good looks Toffee <3 AND respectable facial hair. But for real, Bob and Toffee have climbed to my top 5 lop ships, i adore their dynamic and designs so much, they make my lil heart happy. Kathy is a bimbo lesbian and i love her so much for it, Bob and Kathy friendship is everything <3

Must Love Frogs

Kathleen is beaver Kae. Oh no, Beaver Kae is the sort of nickname that might stick...

lopoddity

Bob's sweet old Auntie Fran is a rat! Them's fightin' words, Merry! >:O

owlcoholik

Why am I built like this lesbian beaver you made up. Feels personal. Think she might be my new fav

marsh_beast

So does Toffee ever meet Kathy? Are they friends?

lopoddity

Honestly I like to think Toffee and Kathleen end up absolute besties. Toffee is wary of her first, even a little jealous, which Kathleen picks up on and immediately shows him he has nothing to fear. Kathleen is also artsy-fartsy just like Toffee, so he has a buddy to get stupidly excited with about sewing costumes for a local children’s theater or touring the history of show tunes museum

Heartsy

I noticed that Merry uses Toffee’s legal name (Tobias) rather than his nickname in his little “you are a complete disgrace speech” is there a specific doggy cultural reason for that? Is it maybe because nickname are generally used by people that respect or are especially close to you, and Merry and Toffee are clearly neither these days?

lopoddity

Exactly. Dogs love nicknames, the sillier the better. For example, nobody calls Biscuit by her real name Bridget unless they're a stranger or a distant colleague. Dogs pride themselves on being friendly and super social, and offering someone a nickname to use for them is a show of good will and trust. Even Merry does this, insisting his churchgoers see him not as the old and distant authority figure "Merriweather", but simply Merry- your friend, father figure, and worship leader. Merry addresses Toffee as Tobias as a subconscious way to both distance himself from him and exert control as a parent. Merry is the one who named him Tobias, and that's who he was for years. He HAD a nickname, Merry gave it to him- "Toby", Merry's brilliant future heir and man-in-the-making. But then he went off to college and became the spineless (insert slur of choice here) that goes by "Toffee". Merry refuses to use it. Of course, Merry is not consciously considering all this as he does it, he just does it. He is hoping that someday soon, Tobias will remember who he really is.

I’m eternally amused because I know an older couple that are my neighbors and their names are Bob and Kathy.

It makes me so happy the growth in your skill at portraying different body types in both your art and your narratives. Not that you were ever shitty about it, but I see more of your characters who are chubby without it being part of their story/something other characters tease them about and I really love that.

lopoddity

Aw thanks! I believe all bodies are beautiful, and that a person's weight or health does not determine their worth. Being fat is not a moral failure, it's simply a state of being. I will warn you though, I'm planning on digging into Gigi's character soon, and her story DOES feature a lot of negative body talk/bullying over weight/disordered eating. And also a discussion that I think some body positive media often skirts around- how overeating can be an act of self-harm, or a way of burying unaddressed negative feelings and thoughts. I think there's room for a lot of nuance when it comes to discussing weight. Is it bad to be fat? No. Is it unhealthy to be fat? Often, at least in the long run. Is every fat person unhealthy? No, but even if they are, they should still be treated with kindness and respect. Should fat people have their bodies policed? No. Should fat people work to lose weight? It's their life to live, though I would recommend EVERY human practice eating well and exercising. Do I, an overweight person, wish to lose weight? Yes, because losing weight makes my body and mind feel better. Am I still gonna draw fat bodies? Yep!

Can I ask a maybe silly question? How do certain clothes work for animals with big tails? I imagine for animals with small or skinny tails there's just an appropriate hole in the clothes. Do dogs that wear dresses have to be conscious about their tails so they don't flash everyone?

lopoddity

Wow that's a really good question. XD I imagine with a skirt, there's usually a hole in the back (complete with adjustable snaps/velcro for different sized tails) for critters to stick their tail through.
