Someone tried to poison a Concubine! How scary, but exciting for Maomao! She was so excited to have sipped that poisoned broth that she wanted to go back for seconds!

...the real question here is...who is trying to harm the Concubines!

HA HA..... Nittpic. It gonna be hard to you watching this show. It's plagued with cliffhangers.

Just to clarify something, that would be futher said later, but it is implied that the ladies in waiting of Lishu bully her. The voice that you hear at the start are her lady in waiting saying that she is picky with her food assuming she is just a naive little girl and kind of too picky. They also are responsible for what she wear at the garden party which make Maomao saying that Lishu doesn't know how to read the room, but in fact that just her lady in waiting wanting to make lady Lishu look bad in public. So with all that, it's easy to do 1+1 and lady Lishu's taster did swap the plate just to make her look bad by demonstrating that she is picky, but in fact she is just allergic to some food and her ladies in waiting don't know that. That why the taster was so afraid when Maomao said it was poison, because that should have been her tasting it normally and when Maomao said all the things about allergic foods conducting to death, and giving her that knowingly would be the same as giving her poison, she made it clear for the taster that if she don't stand straight, her head might fell off the next time she'll do something like that, because Maomao know and now, even Jinshi and Gaoshun.

I had an allergy test when I was 4 or 5. I remember people around me saying that I was allergic to a lot of things... but as I grew up I no longer had allergies (or very mild ones). As of right now I am allergic to something but I have no idea what it is. I had an allergic reaction (i.e. fingertips swelling, feeling feverish, slightly dizzy) when I finished fixing an F-15 and was turning in the broken parts. It was bizarre and I went to the ER on base, waited for 3 hours before being seen (since my throat wasn't swelling up). By the time the doctor got to me the symptoms had already passed. They just gave me a shot of Benadryl as a precaution and told me to go home before the drowsiness kicked in. Fun times :)

Nearly every episode of this show has a cliffhanger ending, you should've tried watching it weekly on the original broadcasts like me, where you don't even get a choice in the matter. The young 'golden retriever' Lihaku isn't a eunuch, he's a junior military officer and the officers were only allowed in the Rear Palace for the garden party itself. As other have said Lady Lishu's foodtaster had swapped her dishes with the ones meant for Lady Gyokuyo because as foreshadowed at the start of the episode Lishu is considered 'picky' by her ladies-in-waiting, they don't understand food allergies, so it was actually considered as an act of mild bullying rather than trying to harm her. The taster didn't know that the original food, including the dish containing jellyfish instead of mackerel, meant for Lishu also had poisoned soup. So she was terrified both because she narrowly avoided tasting the poison that Maomao had and was being told indirectly afterwards that an allergic reaction could kill Lishu. Therefore going forward with this information feeding one of the Emperor's consorts something like this would be considered the same as intentionally poisoning them, which would mean she'd receive the death penalty. The whole thing with mentioning concubine Lishu, the Empress Dowager and Ah-Duo's ages was to imply that whilst youthful concubines & age gaps wasn't unusual, even by the standards of the day the previous Emperor had uncomfortably 'young' tastes. For what it's worth thankfully it's implied that Lishu has remained 'innocent' both with her time serving the previous Emperor thanks to other protectors because of her extremely young age then and again with the current Emperor because he has much more normal mature tastes.
