I gues Maomao never get's a day off. Even when she goes home, her assistance is needed. This time she is needed for a double suicide at the brothel, but something seems suspicious! I know that she will be able to figure out the mystery and then some!

Also...poor Jinshi. He must really think Maomao gave it up to that other guy. Hah!

Detective Maomao on the case. Yes, the person who hughs Maomao in the opening is herself. I cannot comment more because spoilers. Also with the anex thing. Is important in the future. In this show, every detail is important.

We've said this before more than once, but please try to avoid reading the synopses, they're narrative spoilers for both yourself and anyone watching the reactions who's not already seen the show and they're usually written in with broad strokes, somewhat inaccurate and very lacking in nuance which is one of the show's strengths. Like in this episode it had you making early assumptions rather than fully examining what the plot was giving you in real time. There really is a sense of satisfaction about figuring elements out before the narrative reveals them, plus what often seems like minor details don't get forgotten and often have more wide reaching consequences further down the line. Also on your comment regarding the dual Maomao's in the intro, there's loads of hidden teasers and easter eggs in all three of the series opening sequences to date that gradually make more sense as the episodes & plot progresses, even the different flowers featured here are all very deliberately chosen.

The courtesans each have signed a contract with their brothel who then effectively own them, like Maomao's contract within the rear palace. It's usually for a fixed period of time as much as their earnings, think like a military service contract, hence talking about when their term is up. The difference compared with the rear palace being that a rich customer can potentially buy out a courtesan's contract earlier (provided the brothel is prepared to agree to their offer), or even the courtesan herself if she earns enough money. It's essentially a timed work contract with a buyout clause.
