I really enjoyed this episode mainly because of 2 things:

The blind audition and...

The fact that everyone hears something different when listening to an audition with two very good musicians.

I would love to hear your reasons on who you think should win the audition. I am glad that the audition was based on a vote. Most auditions have an uneven number of judges to make sure that there isn't a tie. In this case the students were choosing who would win and Reina was the final vote. She chose what she thought sounded best and not what she thought she wanted.

This is how auditions go. If I was the only one judging that audition, I would've chosen the performance that had more heart. Would that have sunk the whole band? Probably not...If I were on a panel, Mayu would have probably still won and that's because I would've been outnumbered. This is why we have auditions.

Who would you have chosen off of your first listen? Do you remember who you thought was best the first time you watched the show?

Fun fact. This is when the anime differs from the source material. In the ligth novel, Kumiko retakes the solo from Mayu here, but the director of the anime has another idea. He thinks that to complete Kumiko's character grow, something has to change. The director talks to Ayano Takeda, the author, about this and both came to how this episode ends. So the part of Kumiko losing again to Mayu and the scenes with Kanade and Reina are anime original. Love the scene with Kanade. She likes to tease Kumiko a lot, but she love and respect her. Her frustation to how the audition ended is super touching. And the paralelims with the first season in the scene with Reina is ..... absolute cinema!!! The scene with Mayu before the audition....exquisite!!! Also, love the scene with Michie sensei. She's a softie. HA HA. I don't have the expertise to say who was better in the audition, but I was very susprised when Mayu's won. Then I was surprised again when I realized that in that was a change in the adaptation. I like more the anime version. The grand finale is coming!!. Watch it to the last second!!!

Wow! Honestly, I need to look up the manga and see about purchasing them. I really loved this series and wouldn’t mind owning the actual story. Plus…it would look nice on my shelf that I plan on getting in the future sometime. Lol.

I love this ending so much, even though it's different from the novel. The scenes with Kanade and Reina are incredible; I cried buckets the first time I saw them. Seeing Kumiko grow so much is truly beautiful. It makes me so nostalgic to see her in the first season, so indecisive about her life and music. Comparing her now to this version of her so determined, strong, and wise is wonderful. I don't know anything about music, but I always liked Kumiko's solo the most, and your explanation of her sound gave me an idea of why. What do you think of Kanade now? Haha. The little devil always had my affection, but it's nice to see people who didn't like her character so much in the movie now liking her more. By the way, I laughed so hard when you called Mayu cabrona haha.

"I am me, iconic." A line from Hanabie's newest song "Iconic". Guess what NittPicc? Face it, that's what you are when you play. Deal with it!!!

I definitely thought the 2nd audition was better and I expected it to be Kumiko - the tone seemed warmer and a better fit to the Trumpet, but I know nothing about brass really. I wondered for a moment if Reina picked 1 thinking it was Kumiko being the weaker player but still wanting to play with her, then decided Reina would never do that, even for Kumiko.

This episode reminded me of why I cried so hard when I graduated high school band. The people you make music with, the souls you get so in tune with playing with, go their different ways and staying in touch is hard but not impossible. Watching Reina and Kumiko at the end there reminded me of that feeling. That connection that I miss… Kanade…ugh. Seeing that moment in a different light with Kumiko now being the senpai…that pulled so hard at my heartstrings. Again…moments where band feels like your helping the others gain the same confidence you have (fake it or make it) as they continue their journey through band…UGH!

Lol! I feel super cool and confident when I play, but as a human I feel like a regular Joe-shmoe! I’m okay with that though. It keeps me down to earth where I like to be. Lol.

The musicality of Kumiko had so much love and heart. I really really thought she had won that audition. …I would’ve died if I had the deciding vote. I think I would’ve crumbled right then and there if I had to choose, so good on Reina for being honest.

I remember the ending change being VERY controversial among fans of the original novels. As someone who hasn't read the source material, I heavily appreciate the change and I think this makes for far more of a stronger ending.....even if its very sad that Kumiko can't play the soli. While I don't think Kumiko winning trivializes the conflict throughout the season or the theme of meritocracy (if the band decided that Kumiko is better on her playing alone, then shes better), but as a story, I do think it weakens it for sure. ESPECIALLY if Reina still ends up tie breaking in the novels, it really dampens it if someone with that much bias towards Kumiko is the deciding factor in Kuminko winning. The ending here feels like tt's one last push of Kumiko's ideals, what she feels has brought her to where she is now in this season. The strongest part being her quickly recovering and proclaiming to the whole band that they have finally chosen the strongest set of members to go get gold, even if that meant she lost. It's so satisfying as a story. On paper anyways lol. I found myself thinking much of the same you did when I watched it back in 2024. Even before I knew it was Kumiko behind solo number 2, I felt it was a good bit stronger emotionally and especially with the dynamics. I do appreciate that they made the solis both really good while feeling distinctive from each other, and they felt in character, but I do wish they gave solo 1 more oomf to justify the decision (although I haven't thought in the cultural differences that would go into this type of judgement as you brought up). Can't wait for the final!

The source material is actually Japanese novels. Only the first volume has been officially released in English. There isn't a manga unfortunately.

This episode is the highest rated episode of the entire series on IMDB with a 9.7/10. I remember watching this episode just after it aired, and I just lost it. I felt so unbelievably upset, just like how Kumiko felt when she lost the previous audition. I wanted to hate Mayu. I wanted to hate the story for making me feel so much frustration, but really what I hated was seeing such a hardworking and amazing president not get what she wanted. It hurt to see her fall short. You compared Kanade to Kumiko from season 2, and I had not seen it like that previously but I agree! But I think what really sticks out for me in this episode is that it makes the audience feel the same feelings that Yuko did in season 1. I wanted Kumiko to win. She works so hard so she deserves it. After 11 watch throughs of this show, I still cry even just thinking about this episode and how this audition makes me feel. I want Kumiko to play the soli with Reina. I want that magical happy ending but the fact that we did not get that, and instead get a solid conclusion to Mayu's story just makes for a better story. I am kind of rambling, but I wanted to say that I have watched many reactions to this and almost everyone likes Kumiko's performance better. You can feel the heart and it just sounds so much more full of life. I have tried to understand why Mayu's was chosen, and I don't really know music, but from what I've learned is maybe Reina sees Mayu's version as a better fit for the piece as a whole, or that the stronger emotion in Kumiko's performance is not what competition judges would appreciate. I don't know if that makes sense, but that's the sort of things I have seen as speculation on it. One other detail which is interesting when you look back at this episode is to look who voted for Kumiko. Shuichi, Kanade, Midori all did. I believe they recognize her sound, and maybe that's part of the explanation. Kumiko is our main character, so it only makes sense that we should think she should get the soli. Maybe they gave her that more soulful performance to push that feeling further. Just speculation on my part.

A little bit late on this but in the original novel Kumiko actually won the audition, this is anime original.

I want the manga so bad! I would like to collect them. This would be nice to read to see what else is different in the manga.

Edited for clarification: The manga doesn't exist. This anime is based on a Japanese novel series, which could have something to do with why the writing is so good! I have the K-ON! manga and it's really fun. So if they made one for Eupho I would be all over it.
