You guys are trying to emotionally kill me, aren't y'all?

I honestly thought that I made a mistake when I started watching this. I had to make sure I was watching the right show and the right episode.

I refuse to say anything in this post that could ruin this first episode for anyone who decides to watch this with me for the first time, so...

ENJOY!

This show has become the top rated show rigth now debunking shows that where top for decades. The director of this show is Keiichiro Saito, who was the director of Bocchi the Rock. Original soundtrack made by Evan Call. A masterful one. Opening song. "Hero" by YOASOBI Ending song. "Anytime, Anywhere" by the goddess Milet. All names of the characters in this show are of german origins and all has a meaning. Frieren voice actress is a old friend of us, Atzumi Tanezaki who voiced Mizore in Sound Euphonium and Lady Gyokuyou in Apothecary Diaries. Nittpic, about the titles of the episodes, I don't know which version are you watching but it seems it's a fanfic translation. The titles are different and also some dialogs from the official version in Crunchyroll.

The last 2-3 years, Frieren is only anime that I likely can rewatch it again except One Piece. Frieren-BJE is very beautiful story/plot. I really like it. I don’t want to spoil it for you but for me personally I don’t like 2nd season (just me)

I don’t know who suggested frieren but I loved this show ….it does have some sad moments …but also funny moments and action…yes this is episode one …the music and story is the best with this show opening song and ending song and music in the show is amazing

It would be sage to have a box of tissues next to you just in case, because yeah, this show could make you cry, but will also amaze you by both its storytelling and animation at time, so you are here for a great time nonetheless.

Finally Frieren on best reaction channell. After I tried Zoltraak covers too many times in music chat :). I had a long break from reactions, but stayed patreon, for times when i will feel better. Now i have to return, i love this show and soundtrack.

I could’ve SWORN I looked Crunchyroll high and low if they had it. I couldn’t find it. Maybe I’m crazy. I’ll try again. But if I have to I’ll re-look up episode names that are the ones from the translated version.

As Luis has said, you can tell these are fansubs & this is very much available to watch officially on Crunchyroll, with season two that's currently airing being one of their flagship titles, so really confused how you struggled to find it. This and Apothecary Diaries are comfortably two of the best all-round shows of the last five years and the manga/light novels for both are great also. The opening four episodes of season one were aired together on release in Japan and effectively treated like a movie introducing you to the setting & characters, complete with all the necessary world building.

I don’t know either. I could’ve sworn I dug through Crunchyroll. 😅 I was sent a link, so I will use that from now on. Thank goodness.

The music is this show is just the best that I've heard from any show ("You're lie in April" doesn't count). He (Even Call) also did the music for the anime "Violet Evergarden", another emotional series, which I considered the best until Frieren .

Himmel died peacefully, surrounded by his friends, watching something beautiful. It was a good death. We should all be so lucky. I just started watching this recently. I think I'm on episode... 4 or 5? It starts slow, but I gather it picks up later on. I'm enjoying the vibes for now. I get huge Dragon Quest vibes from this show. The symphonic music, the mix of sorta soft, cartoony character designs with watercolor-y backgrounds, and obviously the fantasy RPG feel. There's a great hero who killed a demon king, whose time has passed, and that's a trope that DQ games eat with both hands.

Crunchryroll just update their video player and now works really well. yaaaayyy!!!

This is a more Germanic style of fantasy than D&D due to the cultural influence in Japan over the last 150yrs, hence all the character names being German words as well as the place names (gives some additional insight into the story if you understand the language, or look up translations). The official anglicized title of the show is Frieren: Beyond Journey's End, hence you getting so confused by the initial setup plotwise.

As I said on discord, Frieren is an anime that truly has it all. It and apothecary diaries first season aired close together and overlapped. I think the two of them have me spoiled. I see someone else mentioned it below, but I will reiterate it here in regards to the music. Evan Call, the composer, is masterful at composing music that heightens emotion. The man is great. There is such attention to detail with Frieren. Early in Episode one, when they are approaching the city, the pass a stonewall that has no moss on it and looks really new. Frieren, when departing the city after Himmel's funeral, passes the same wall fifty years later. The wall is now covered with moss. That is great attention to detail. There are tons of moments like that in Frieren. I will be looking forward to re-watching this series with you and have a great week!

The subverting of Dragon Quest-esque tropes is definitely intentional with how the initial narrative of the show sets a lot of things up. As you probably already know, Dragon Quest is an even bigger franchise for Square Enix than Final Fantasy unlike in the West, so the various nods in terms of art style, character stereotypes and story beats are pretty obvious for Japanese viewers.
