If you can possibly die on a expedition, it's not the time to be looking into romance.

I know that the heart wants what it wants, but it might be time to reevaluate the mission if you are looking for love. Sometimes we get lonely, but being on a trip away from home can be a vulnerable time for EVERYONE involved. I do feel for that guy though...

Shirase and Gin are legit the same person in different aged bodies. No wonder her mom loved being around Gin and leaving Shirase with her.

My heart breaks for Gin though. Hearing your friend's last words isn't something you'll ever forget.

I can relate to Boston. I have to cut the hair off my face when I start looking stragly.

From what we've seen we know Gin & Shirase's mom Takako were close friends since at least high school, probably best friends. Whilst current expedition vice commander Kanae also knew Takako and was part of the first expedition, it's not shown how long prior to that she'd known the two of them, so the bond whilst strong wasn't necessarily on the same level. I think Toshio's one-sided hopeless crush on Gin side-story is present to provide some lighthearted brevity to partially balance out the much heavier stuff dealing with Takako's death and both Gin & Shirase's grief and the complex emotions surrounding it. Also it shows more of the human side of the expedition members, most of them have been involved in this ongoing project for years so it's entirely possible that things might develop over that time period. Incidentally their icebreaker, the Penguin Manju Go, is based on a real icebreaker operated by the Japanese Navy called Shirase (AGB-5003).
