Hi! Here's us talking about a bit of research that's been sitting in Seth's notebook since the very beginnings of The Annex. Basically, this one dude is on the losing end of several of the biggest blowouts in organized tennis history, and it turns out he's a dude from the Czech Republic who competed in "Futures" tournaments even though he was in his mid-50s and only kind of knew how to play tennis.

Why? We still don't know, but we did a little bit of journalism to try to find out. Just a little bit. Like, really the tiniest amount.

Golden Set is one set so 24 points. It has happened in a major, Shvedova-Errani at wimbledon 2012 (third round!). It should be noted that Errani was no scrub -- she'd made the Singles final at the French Open like a month prior -- and in doubles she went on to win a career Golden Slam. Just that one day in 2012 she had the worst set of her life (she went on to actually break serve at one point in the second set en route to a 6-0 6-4 loss.)

Based on my own experience with tennis as a child, it's much easier to win a return point when you absolutely suck, because getting a serve in is super hard as you only get a quarter of the court you can aim for whereas a return can land anywhere on your opponent's side. Or your opponent can double fault, that happens too. I'm pretty sure my first set I got my serve in like twice en route to a golden set and quitting tennis forever on the spot

David Dyte

On the plus side, he's undefeated in the second round.

This story genuinely feels like its some small spy operation.

Can you bet on ITF matches? I wonder if this could be part of some extremely low level, pointless match-fixing scheme

This sounds like the guy looked up "tennis near me" and clicked on the first link, after he got a racquet for christmas or something.
