Here's today's Weird Rules (which is back!), early and free of ads for your delectation. Ryan and I (I'm Seth) talked about the TWO rules that came into play when Gabe Kapler tore up his Achilles tendon rounding bases after a teammate homered. Actually, this was in one of the ad pop-ups but I think it's worth knowing: The guy who pinch-ran for Kapler, Alejandro Machado, scored his first career run on this bizarre play, and didn't have much of a career thereafter.

Anyway, enjoy!

This series is, by far, my favorite. Keep them coming!

Mets fell afoul of this baseball pedantry with the Grand Slam Single. Robin Ventura hit a grand slam in the bottom of a tie game in the 11th inning of an NLCS game, but only one player crossed the plate before his teammates mobbed him just after he reached first base, so he was only credited with a single and one RBI and the official score of the game was 4-3.

I don't know. I've always liked the ritual and OCD of baseball. It feels like nothing else to play or watch. I think we discount the speed of baseball. It's "slow" and yet only the higher end of auto racing can approach the speed baseball can move at. All those rules are to keep a game which has objects flying around at 70-120mph from devolving into carnage. By the numbers baseball is the most deadly American sport. So the ritual and respect of it is probably a good idea.

Reminds me of a story my high school track coach told me about a 4x4 team he saw run at the state meet. They did well enough in prelims to qualify for the final, which "entitled" them to medals and a point for their school...as long as they finished the final. The first runner injured his leg no more than halfway through his lap. He spent a few minutes on the ground, but refused medical attention because any physical contact would disqualify his team. He eventually got up, hobbled back to the start/finish line and handed off the baton. The rest of the team jogged their laps, and they all lived happily ever after.

Savannah Bananas celebration of each run is cool and goes into the spirit of celebrating cool things
