34 years ago this week, history was made.

Some of it was major, some of it was minor, some of it was weird, and some was stupid and dangerous. But in each case, it was history and it all happened this very week in 1992.

For today's project, Seth, Ryan and I (hi it's Will) dipped into stories that span the NHL, NBA, the Olympics, even a hot air balloon race. Weirdly enough, it's not our first time to create something having to do with any of those sports (RIP my article about an old timey balloon race that I can no longer find). But, this is our first time approaching stories by exploring a moment in time.

That's what "This Week in Sports" is trying to do. A lot of the time while we're researching a video topic, we dig through newspapers.com for something specific, but become distracted by the surrounding stories. As Seth describes it, it's a sense of, "oooo what's that?" The topic you were originally chasing can lead you into a period of time that is often interesting simply because it feels so different, but weirdly connected to what originally brought you to that moment. So, those "what's that?" stories are what we want to focus on.

Instead of looking back at one moment, one team or athlete, we're here to explore one week. This week in fact, just from a different year. It's a show-and-tell style that we've utilized since the start of this Patreon, but borrowing from a format I've wanted to do for a while. The original idea was a weekly podcast in 2021 that looked back at the events that took place that same week, just 20 years earlier. At the time, it was too much to pull off.

But now, thanks to all of you, we're able to try out an updated version that honestly I (and Seth & Ryan too, unless they were lying) found to be way more fun and interesting.

Since it's a new thing, let us know what you think. There's a lot directions to take it, we'll keep finessing to get it feeling right, but I like the path it's heading down so far.

Hour long secret base podcast? I’m sat.

Dr. Katz

This is the single most unique thing that Secret Base has made, well done!

Some small bit of context about the Atlanta animation thing: TBS is headquartered in the city, they run cartoon network. On a nearby street called Williams Street is another smaller TBS building, that over the years has housed Adult Swim and other pieces of cartoon network related stuff. At least in the early seasons of Rick and Morty you can see the silhouette of the face of the building as one of the logos that they show post credits. I used to walk by it all the time when I was at GT, there used to be this very cool mural on the wall next to the sidewalk that had a square for every show the Williams street studio worked on that had the date the show premiered and art representing the show. Stretching all the way back to original space ghost stuff

1) i loved this show 2) i was kinda disturbed by how cleanly Will pulled off the snothead podcaster intro/outro voice, down the cadence and vibe it genuinely filled me with rage

I would like to thank Seth for mentioning my favorite Shakespearean play in a sports podcast. I feel seen.

Funny that Ryan said "they Soniced Izzy" because then they went and literally made a high speed action platformer for the Genesis (and SNES) called Izzy's Quest for the Olympic Rings. Learning about that game in around 2010 or so was my introduction to Izzy. We did have a Coca-Cola / Atlanta 1996 coffee mug in our house growing up; no idea what happened to it now. I might seek out another one one day... (And don't worry, Ancient Greece fans, Athens would get the 2004 Olympics.)

Secret Base

yeah i still feel really bad about that, for the fact y'all had to hear that and that i had that in me. who am i?

Aidenke

This was fantastic. Would absolutely love to see this randomly pop up (even if it is "this month in sports history" or something sustainable).

Seth: as someone who has a 4 year old, who has just been notified she is gonna be a big sister, I’m curious to see what the next few months hold 😂

I love your guys' stuff, but could we *please* dial down the interstial chatter about changing attitudes about sex and gender, because a *lot* of it came off as mean-spirited, when I'm pretty sure your intent was to contrast where we are today vs back then. Let history's shitty attitudes speak for themselves.

Secret Base

hey thanks for saying that and we'll keep working to be more cognizant. our intentions certainly weren't to be shitty, but the best intentions don't mean much if y'all are experiencing something different. appreciate you flagging this, it will be taken to heart -will
