Chapter 82 Finalizing The Team by Paul Charm

This business with the Pay It Forward Society still feels a bit vague for my liking, but Rebecca and I have managed to pry loose a few details over the past few days, and I’ll circle back to that in a tick. First off, we’ve made a decision about the team. Will Robertson suggested adding a medic in case of emergencies. Sensible idea.

We’ve brought on Noah Vale, an EMT, to cover that role. Then I had what I thought was a rather bright idea that I shared with Rebecca.

“If it makes sense to have someone who can patch us up physically,” I said, “oughtn’t we have someone who can do the same emotionally?”

She nodded thoughtfully. “Hmm … like someone trained in mental health.”

“And,” I added, “when you’re dealing with people in need—it just makes sense.”

So, for convenience—and because she’s rather perfect for it—we’re recruiting Izzy Duffy. She’s got her master’s in psychology and already works as a social worker. Feels like a no-brainer, as the Americans say.

Now, with that worked out, I should mention a few details we’ve finally managed to extract from the Society’s far-too-secretive communications.

The team is to meet each Saturday to check in and report any—and all, as the messages insist—humanitarian or volunteer work they’ve done.

They’re also to be ready for at least one mission each month: fly out on Friday, back Sunday night. That means working both days on whatever task arises. They’ll be paid seven hundred pounds for the weekend.

And that’s on top of the Society providing housing simply for being on the team.

Quite a generous arrangement, really.

Rebecca and I are also to take delivery of two seven-seat grey Titanium Expeditions—enormous things, very American—but they’ll serve the purpose.

One personal note before I sign off.

When I pointed at an Expedition as we walked along, I can’t say I minded when she slipped her hand ‘round my arm and leaned towards where I was pointing. Nor, for that matter, when she didn’t let go as we carried on toward our own homes at the end of the walk.

Chapter 83 BACK TO BROOKLYN by Izzy Duffy

I’m heading home now. I have a few hours of travel ahead of me. Time to… process.

When I left New York a few days ago, I had a myriad of thoughts—questions, too—spinning around in my head. I wanted to talk to someone to help me hear myself say them out loud.

In Texas, I made some memories, met some new friends, and had some fun. I also had some long talks, some nice laughs, and time to let my mind sort through things.

When I arrive home, I will have some things I want to say—when the time is right. I’m not calling it a plan. Just a direction I want to follow.

To sum it up, it goes something like this: “You know, Kent… this little project we shared for Stop-Gap Housing was fun, right? We should hang out more often, even if it's not doing volunteer work.”

I’ve got a lot of miles to figure out better wording!

Then when the actual moment arrives, I’ll end up saying, “Um… hey… yeah… so… whatta you think… Um, wanna get a burger?”

That’s how it goes, right?

Be your best you!

"Thank You" Message to Paying Supporters:

Thank you very much for your help underwriting the cost of producing AGI Stories content. You can be sure that your paid membership is valued greatly! It helps keep things going.

The cost of software is real and far from trivial. At the time of this post, not counting hardware, AGI Stories racks up expenses of just at $100 per month. Patreon members are covering a nice portion of that.

I believe most of you who help with the costs are doing so because you want to support the production process and show your encouragement. While most of the content is free and public, the hope is that reserving a few pictures and small sections of the post for you is a modest indication of gratitude!

Again, thank you very, very much.

The author of Ch 82 is Paul...Kent?? Um. Hmm. Well, moving on, sounds like plans are shaping up. I'm glad they' are grey. I was visualizing gloss black SUVs with fully tinted windows. Grey can signal important with out being intimidating. And...hello! No man on Earth would mind Rebecca slipping her hand around his arm! No man. Just saying. And Izzy, eh?? I guess I thought Izzy was already in the Society. She is already "at the Crossroads". That is...convenient. But perfect. She continues to impress. To Izzy: That's exactly how it goes! Press on! Things will be fine. Love that hair! Good luck to you all.
