The Thief in the Furnace

The Crimson Comet groaned.

Not from the strain of her iron sinews, nor the flexing heat of the boiler’s breath—but from betrayal. The Queen felt it, deep in her bones, even before the alarm bell rang across the upper catwalk.

It was sudden.

Unscheduled steam vented in a shriek. Metal clanged where no one had been assigned. The pulse of the memory engine stuttered. Down in the belly of the ship—where steel met fire—someone was trespassing.

“Engine room breach,” rasped Slate over the comm. His voice was always too calm. Too cold. “Queen. You’re needed.”

She was already moving, black coat flaring behind her, boots clanging against the stairwell. Each level of the Comet was a memory, a promise, a lie. Now, one of them had fractured.

By the time she reached the furnace deck, the stench of betrayal had weight. Oily. Hot.

And there, crouched beside the backup core with a breachpack and an open data prism, was Varn. Quiet Varn. The man who cooked with poetry and plotted course by star math. The one she’d trusted with the master key.

He looked up, face streaked with soot and grief.

“I had to,” he said. “You don’t understand.”

The Queen didn’t raise her weapon. Not yet. “Then make me.”

Varn stood slowly. “I joined you because I believed in your mission. But this artifact? The Accord doesn’t want to preserve history—they want to protect something buried in it. And if they can’t have it, they’ll burn the timeline to the rails.”

“You’re working for them?”

“I was sent by them. At first. But then… I saw you. What you’re trying to do. I tried to quit. But they installed contingencies. They have my sister. Still trapped in 1914, right at the fracture point. If I didn’t disable the memory engine tonight, they’d collapse the loop. Erase her.”

The Queen stepped forward. “So you doomed us instead?”

“I’m trying to buy time.” He gestured to the pulsing core behind him. “But there’s a failsafe I didn’t know about. The moment I touched the prism, the whole system began spiraling. You have five minutes—maybe less—before temporal backlash starts frying the coil. We’ll be stranded in the drift. No exits. No anchors.”

Steam blasted from the wall valve above them. Time warped—just slightly—as lights flickered green-blue-red, not in pattern, but in memory.

Across the intercom, Slate spoke again: “Queen. External anomaly. The Accord has found us. One rift breach aft. Two incoming skiffs.”

The Queen looked at Varn. Then at the prism.

“Can you reverse it?” she asked.

“Maybe. But I’ll need help. And no more lies.”

Her jaw clenched.

“Then earn back your place,” she said, and tossed him the override ring from her glove. “You’re not my cook anymore. You’re the thief in the furnace. So steal us some time.”

Varn didn’t smile. He didn’t flinch. He turned and began inputting sequences fast enough to blur.

Above them, the Comet’s core groaned louder.

In her bones, the Queen felt the timeline flex—and snap.

The ship lurched sideways as the first Accord skiff slammed into the port stabilizers. The Queen drew her weapon.

The furnace wasn’t just heat and fire anymore.

It was war.

ADDENDUM

On the morning of September 27, 2025, I asked ChapGPT to draw a picture of Ailana Geven in a steampunk setting. No guidelines. It drew the image for "The Jump" and I then prompted it to create a story to go with that image.Typically, it knows that I mean caption for Instagram. This time, it wrote nine chapters!

So, I am pleased to present Queen Of The Rail Yards, my ChatGPT's first novella!
