Chapter 84 TEAM MEETING by Emma Knox

Well, things around here today have been real busy. After me, Merritt, Hannah, and Kent had breakfast together, we all went out to Queens and looked at the house what used to be Kent’s and his parent’s before that. He sold it on account it needs a lot of work to fix it back up, and he just didn’t want to put all that work in and not get anything out.

Anyway, now that he’s on The Pay It Forward Society team, he’s getting to live here at The Crossroads Apartments.

Well, we had a meeting today and learned a little about what we’ll be doing. We have our first real assignment next weekend. Everyone says they are excited to find out what kinds of things we’ll be doing.

Paul and Rebecca asked us what we thought about adding Izzy Duffy to the team. She’s got a lot of training in social work and psychology. Naturally, we all thought it was a good idea, so they are going to go ask her about it.

Well, the meeting ended a little while ago and we were all talking about what to do. I suggested we go see a movie called ‘Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere’ because my Daddy was a big fan of his and I thought it’d be interesting. Just Merritt thought it was a good idea, so me and him are going soon as he gets his keys.

Me and Merritt have been getting on pretty well since running into each other that night he got locked out. He’s really the nice kind of guy that I always look for as far as socializing. I’m not calling this a real date, exactly, but it’ll be fun to go out with just the two of us and do something together.

And, as far as I can tell right now, if we did go out on a real date sometime, I think I’d be okay with that. And as far as I can tell, he would be, too.

So, it’s us two getting pizza and going to see a movie!

Chapter 85 MOVIES FOR ALL by Hannah Madison

Today has been a very interesting day. Let’s see how much I can fit in one post?

It started this morning with Emma, Merritt, Kent and me having breakfast in the common room. We’ve embraced the idea that we are teammates for The Pay It Forward Society, so that’s led us to work on getting to know each other.

After breakfast, we all piled into Merritt’s Accord and Kent took us to where his house was. He admitted that he probably held on to it too long, mostly out of nostalgia since it had been his folks’ house.

We grabbed burgers on the way back to The Crossroads for our team meeting.

Paul and Rebecca went over some things they learned about missions. We’ll be doing… something every few weeks, and when we do, it will be a very long weekend. The pay for it comes out to be pretty decent, and that goes on top of our free housing we get just for agreeing to be on the team.

“Now then,” Paul said, “I want us to start thinking like we are a team. Equal with different jobs, not ranks.”

He went on to propose that we should invite Izzy Duffy onto the team. He argued her social work experience and training in psychology would be very beneficial. We all agreed, and he said he’d start that ball rolling right away.

Rebecca then announced our first mission would be next weekend. We all get picked up in the team’s new SUVs, then off to NJ to the airport. Then… The message said, “Details pending.”

“Still unsettles me,” Paul said.

After the meeting, we were all in the common area while Paul and Rebecca talked to Izzy who just got back from Texas.

“What should we do for the rest of the day,” Merritt asked.

Now, this is where, in my opinion, things started to get interesting, eventually leading to me in my bedroom calling it an early night.

The rest of this Chapter is exclusive to Patreon.

Emma’s answer to Merritt’s question surprised everyone a little. “I’d like to see ‘Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere'. My dad was a huge fan of him.”

Merritt shrugged. “Movie at a theater? I could go for that. It’s been a while.”

Emma smiled like she does when she’s pleased.

Kent wasn’t sold on the idea, and frankly, neither was I. No real reason. Just the idea of a crowded theater didn’t seem relaxing. So, Merritt and Emma decided they’d go to the movie together.

“We can stop for pizza,” Emma added. “I’ll treat us!”

I picked up a distinct “almost date” vibe from both of them. I’ve picked up that vibe a few times talking to Emma… so, that’s something to watch.

Noah and Jacob (who have, by the way, moved into the dorm area) suggested the rest of us could just hang out and watch movies or something on the TV in the common area. A plan was formed.

Skip up a few hours.

Merritt and Emma are out for pizza and movie. Noah got called in to work (He’s an EMT.) and Addison asked Jacob to come down to the theater (below the apartments) to watch her act because she was on a set depicting the Mississippi Delta area and wanted to know what Jacob, who grew up there, thought.

See what just happened? Now Kent and I are watching movies in the common area, just the two of us.

Then, entered Paul, Rebecca, and Izzy. They had talked it all out, shared dinner, and returned with her paperwork all done and her officially on the team.

The three of them joined Kent and me in the TV area. Immediately, I got the definite feeling that Paul and Rebecca were hanging out so that we could… I don’t know… sort of chaperon them as if they need that. They weren’t cuddling physically, but if your emotions could cuddle on their own, that was definitely going on.

Kent was sitting between Izzy and me and… there were some whispers here and there. One time, I heard Izzy clearly.

“That reminds me of that family we put up in the units in Queens.”

“Oh, yeah,” Kent replied. “I see that.”

I didn’t. Nor should I have because I’ve not shared months of life with either of them. I was definitely the outsider.

Now, let me get this out, so there’s no confusion. Kent’s a great guy. Period. I enjoy his company.

But seeing his connection to Izzy didn’t hurt my feelings. I’m not jealous or over here crying. I just… decided I’d call it a night, just in case I overlooked a dynamic in Kent and Izzy’s relationship that has no need for a third wheel.

When I said I was calling it a night, Paul and Rebecca said they should get going, too. When they stood up, Kent turned to Izzy.

“What do you say we walk them to their walkups, then we can stop in the cafe for coffee and a snack?”

Izzy agreed and… I got that distinct “almost date” vibe from both of them.

So, I’m turning in. I’ll check with Emma in the morning to see if I was right about her and Merritt.
