WHAT ABOUT THANKSGIVING? by Cindi Curtis
Yesterday, I told you I had something on my mind. Sitting in church today, after the benediction, it came up again.
I asked myself why not and couldn’t think of any rational reason. Only my irrational fears and the anxiety-born “what if’s” opposed the idea.
Before church, I talked to mom. She agreed—why not?
I just got off the phone and it went like this.
“Michael, are you at church yet?”
“Just got out. What’s up?”
“I want to ask you something. If I waited until after lunch, I might talk myself out of it.”
He laughed a little. “Okay, what’s on your mind?”
Then, instead of asking, I just blurted out a command! “Come to Colorado for Thanksgiving. Spend the holiday with me and my family.”
“Thanksgiving?” He paused and my blood froze.
Realistically, there was less time between his words than it would take to breathe in and out once. At the moment, that was about 7 years.
“I could fly out on Tuesday afternoon. I have a standing Tuesday meeting with the director of my department for the Nashville job. How’s that sound?”
“It sounds…” I backtracked. “I meant to ask, not tell! I got so excited! It sounds amazing. Can you really do it?”
“Absolutely. I can’t wait to see you again.”
“Me, too!”
He paused. “Hey… When I came out in June, you said you hugged me on impulse. How about this time you make hugging me actually part of the plan?”
I swallowed and paused. “I already did!”

WHAT ABOUT THANKSGIVING? by Michael Allen
I was just out of church earlier today when Cindi called. It was a surprise—but not as big as what she had on her mind.
“Come to Colorado for Thanksgiving. Spend the holiday with me and my family.”
I was already making plans before she finished saying “holiday”!
I’m sure a lot of guys look at Cindi and my relationship and scoff. We’re a thousand miles apart and have only met face-to-face once. They wonder how anything like this could be satisfying.
My response? I guess it depends on what you want out of a relationship.
I went out before, in June. She was nervous, but welcoming.
I rang the bell and expected her dad, Mr. Curtis (Ray), to answer. It was Cindi, her smile beaming.
Her first words: “I’m more excited than I am panicking!”
She impulsively hugged me. It wasn’t planned. It was a little awkward, but it was good.
I could tell she was fighting to keep her anxiety in check the whole time. And she did it.
After lunch that day, Mrs. Curtis sent Mr. Curtis and me out to the den while she and Cindi cleaned up. My offer to help was definitely rejected!
He and I made small talk about sports and my work, then Cindi and Mrs. Curtis joined us. Cindi’s garden became a comfortable topic to take up a good amount of time, then we bounced along until it seemed like it was time for me to go.
Then, Cindi stood up. “Wait… I have… a thought.”
She suggested we could go to a Baskin Robbins drive through and take it to a park (where there wouldn’t be a crowd).
So that happened. And so did this.
“I’m so glad you came,” she said.
“I’m glad you agreed.”
“I didn’t plan on hugging you. That was spur of the moment.”
I smiled. “It was nice.”
“Friends do that.”
I nodded.
“I can’t believe you’re here.”
“It’s nice,” I said, “to see you face to face. I’m really glad it worked out.”
“When you get back to Memphis, I hope we keep talking.”
“Absolutely!” I smiled. “Of course.”
Back on June 1, I posted, “Nine years ago when I saw her tweets, I thought she seemed smart and sweet.”
Now, I know she is. I can’t wait to get to Colorado!
Be your best you!
