Chapter 86 WAS IT A DATE? by Hannah Madison

I caught up with Emma in the kitchen and asked her about the movie with Merritt. Of course, I have permission to tell you what we talked about.

“How was pizza and the movie?” I asked.

“It was real nice. I liked the movie. Merritt did, too.”

I waited to see if she would say more, then said, “You two seem to be getting along well.”

She looked down, smiled, and nodded. “I don’t think we got much in common, ‘cept being from The South. An’ Atlanta sure ain’t Vicksburg, for that matter.”

“But, you get along?”

“Yeah,” she said. “We do, for sure. But I’m not making too much of it. We just went out and had fun.”

I pushed a little more. “But, you’d be happy to make more out of it?”

She laughed and went to the Keurig. “Wouldn’t you be? He’s handsome, nice, and kind. And he’s really smart. Pro’ally too smart for me!”

I paused and changed the subject. “You’re smart, Emma. Intelligent.”

She laughed a little. “I meant book smart. But, I’ll eventually catch up, once I get going at Kingsborough.”

“So…” I finally got around to the question I wanted to ask. “Last night… Was it a date?”

She handed me a coffee pod for when hers was done. “I’m not really sure.”

“How did things end?”

Emma leaned back on the counter. “Well, naturally, he walked me to the door. ‘Course he had to walk right by it on the way to his… We stood a second and said how it was fun. I guess I sort of inched toward him, so he put up his arms and gave me a sweet hug. Then he let go an’ said, ‘This was a fun night. We ought to do something else, sometime.’”

“What did you say?”

“I said, ‘Anytime… just ask.’ Then I came in and closed the door.

Once we both had coffee, we sat at the table and talked about what we’d wear to church, then we started getting ready.

Chapter 84 ABOUT THE TEAM by Merritt Gray

It’s Sunday after church. We all went to the 9:30 service—Hannah, Emma, Kent, Me, Jacob, Izzy, and Noah. It was a good message about showing God’s love to others.

It hit home with us all. It’s sort of the underpinning of The Pay It Forward Society.

Paul and Rebecca met us there. We’ve not said it’s the one and only team church, but today it was.

As we were leaving church, Hannah’s phone rang. It was the woman who runs projects for Habitat Housing, Shay Ryder. She and Hannah met once before, and Shay has reached out a few times since.

Here’s what I heard (skipping over the “hi”s and “how are you”s):

“So, you want all the girls to come to your house for the afternoon?”

Izzy whispered. “She lives in East Village.”

“Hold on…” Hannah nodded and looked at the other girls. “What do you think?”

Emma shrugged, but Izzy spoke loudly enough that Shay could hear. “Shay! It’s Izzy… Can Addison come, too?”

Hannah nodded some more.

So, skip to the end, Shay sent one of her guards/drivers with a car, and all the girls took off for the afternoon.

Once they were gone, Noah suggested we get a pizza delivered. That happened.

I don’t know… That little moment felt like sort of a snapshot of how things are going to be living here and being part of Pay It Forward. It felt really good.

Yesterday, we learned we have our first project—Paul calls them missions—next weekend. If today is any indication, I’d say it should be a pretty good trip… details pending, according to Rebecca’s last message.

Chapter 85 FOR THE TEAM by Kent Marlon

Today has been a really laidback day. After church, all the girls that live at Crossroads went over to East Village to visit Shay Ryder.

Shay’s been on and off texting and calling Hannah since they met a while back. Of course, she works with Izzy… From the sound of things, it was going to be some coffee, a few little sandwiches, and a lot of talking.

I’m kind of surprised. From how I see it, Shay’s not really the type to just hang out with the girls. Don’t get me wrong! She’s a great person. Out of my league socially, but I’ve enjoyed sitting across a table for burgers with her when we were on a job.

I’m really pleased she took the initiative. Not like I have skin in the game, but I feel like having some girl time is good for her.

Izzy said a few times that Shay’s sweet, but she seems to be forcing things when they’ve hung out. But with all the girls there, it should be a fun time and Shay can just mix in as she finds the chance.

Speaking of Izzy—and why I’m buying oranges—last night watching movies, she said we ought to have some community snacks in the common area. She said it would be a good reason for us to come out of our rooms and just hang out together.

So, I thought I’d stretch my legs and leave things back at the apartments to the other guys for a bit. I’m getting some fruit, granola bars, and things like that. The guys said to keep the receipt and we’d split it up when I get back.

I’ll probably lose the receipt, though.

Okay. Sounds like you all had a nice day. Curious about girl talk with Shay, though. Gotta wonder that that is all about. Have a good evening.
