Chapter 03 Movement II: READY TO GO by Noah Vale
Well, I have to admit when I saw Emma Knox at that bus stop, all I could think of was here’s a girl that’s lost and about to get into trouble. But talking to her… She had things under control.
For the rest of that day, I kept thinking about her—she told me her name—so I searched IG and there she was. Creeper? Curious?
Whatever… I started reading her posts and they led me to other posts and other people and into a vague awareness of The Pay It Forward Society and the project team.
I noticed there was no one on the team with any formal medical training. I started to DM Emma. Second thought, DM one of the guys. Better yet, contact Will Roberston, who volunteered to act as an advisor. Senior partner at NYC SysCo, I figured he’d have a receptionist, assistants, and all that, so getting a call from a total stranger at work wouldn’t be a threat.
I told him I thought the team should have someone on it with medical training—not necessarily me, but I’d love the chance to do something big and important. He agreed with me and… now I’m on the team.
When I got on the team, I have to admit I thought it would be nice to get to know Emma. She was pretty fiery at the bus stop and that caught my attention.
Now, moving in here, I noticed right away that she spends a lot of time with Merritt. Can’t say they have something for each other. Can’t say they don’t.
Merritt’s a straight-up guy, too, so looking forward to hanging out and all that. Kent and Jacob, too.
Getting to know Emma isn’t why I wanted on the team, so I’m certainly not going to make issues.
The other girls on the team are pretty cool, too. Hannah and Izzy are really nice to talk to. Addison and I got organized and made omelets for everyone this morning. She’s a lot of fun, to be sure!
I could say more, but I’ll sum things up to say how glad I am to be part of this. We fly out Friday to Colorado to do some conservation work.
Paul Charm says it's as much a test of the process as anything. I also think it will be a lot of fun.

Chapter 04 Movement II: FORWARD THINKING by Merritt Gray
The team is more or less ready for our first project. Bags are packed and stashed here in the common room. Tomorrow after work, we fly out to Colorado.
Emma and I are sitting here talking about what we’re in for. Neither of us have ever been to Colorado, so we’re excited to see the Rockies for the first time. I know it will be a lot different from the Appalachians.
A lot has been different for us both.
“Living in Brooklyn,” Emma said, “sure is a far cry from growing up on a tenant farm outside o’ Vicksburg, Mississippi. I see more folk walking to the church an’ back on a Sunday than I’d see all week, even working at the Casino.”
“How long did you work there?” I asked.
“Mom died of COVID in 2022, an’ I dropped outta school and started. So, all together three years. It wasn’t a bad job, but cleaning up an’ hauling trash didn’t seem like it would’ve amounted t’ much.”
I said that New York isn’t like Atlanta either. “I grew up in the suburbs, and there was a lot more open space. Houses sitting on yards with space between them… But I wanted to work for NYC SysCo, so I kinda knew what I was getting into.”
“Well, I guess Colorado will be even more open than the suburbs.” Emma replied. “‘Course I’ve seen pictures… I bet it will be even grander when we see it for ourselves.”
“I bet you’re right about that.”
Emma and I have been talking a lot since I moved in here. Looking back, I guess getting locked out that night broke the ice.
Now, most mornings, Emma starts breakfast for everyone. It started as just Kent, Hannah, and me, but now it’s all eight of us.
Since she has the most flexible schedule, Emma starts things, but we all jump in as we get ready for work and help. Addison and Noah also have flexible schedules, and today, they conspired to make what Noah called Tennessee omelets. Essentially just bacon, cheese, bell pepper, onion, and mushroom omelets!
So, I’d say we’ve gelled as a team. And since we have our first mission, I’d add that it’s a really good thing!
Be your best you!
