Chapter 35: SHAY CALLED by Hannah Madison

I was wrapping things up at the office to head back to Brooklyn when my phone rang. No text ahead of time. Just a call.

It was Shay Ryder, the woman who runs Habitat Housing’s projects. Izzy works in the same office as she does.

“Hey… Hannah? Um… Hi…”

“Hey Shay. What’s up?”

“I didn’t know if I should have texted first. I decided to just call. Are you off yet?”

“Packing up. I’m slipping out a few minutes early.”

There was a short silence, then she said, “Izzy told me everyone is going to Belize for the weekend. What do you think if I… like did a little send off dinner Thursday night at your apartments? Not fancy… I was thinking pizza. Or something else, I don’t know… what do you think?”

I told her our plans. “We’re supposed to be packed and bags ready to go by end of day Thursday. Wheels up, as they say, 6 p.m. Friday.”

“So,” she replied, “like not having to fuss with dinner would be good or would it be bad?”

I ran my thoughts through the evening and decided grabbing pizza in the common area would make things easier. “I think it would be good. We can focus on packing and just taking it easy.”

“Oh, great!” She was very excited. “I mean, is pizza okay? I could cater in pretty much anything. Like… I don’t know…”

I interrupted her. “Pizza is great. Everyone on the team likes pizza.”

There was a short pause. “Um… so… I wouldn’t want anyone to feel left out. Tell Devon Collier he can take part, too, right? That would be mean to leave him out?”

“Yeah,” I replied. “Yeah, I’ll tell him. He’s been working with Kent. He’s fitting in really well with all of us.”

“Oh, that’s great to hear. He seemed really nice.”

That’s about it for the call. But I do want to say I like Shay, but talking to her always leaves me a little tense. I guess it’s from not knowing what to expect. But she seems to connect with me, and I’m glad that she does.

So it’s pizza for all on Thursday!
