Good Morning
I said that today I’d be doing some literacy work. I set up a session where I can volunteer at the Brownsville Public Library. They have regular programs there, I can just drop in and help out with one of them.
Brownsville’s library system—especially the Main Branch and the Southmost Branch—offers so many ways to get involved. They’re always looking for volunteers to help with adult literacy, education, and community engagement programs, and it makes such a meaningful difference.
If you check their site (brownsvilletx.gov), you’ll see how many people they’re serving every week. It’s one of those places where even a single hour of your time can really change someone’s life.
So, that’s my plan for today. I’ll show up and see what I can do to help. And I’ll take you with me, of course!
See you there!

More Than Words
Reading is more than just being able to follow directions or understand a story. It is access.
I’m at the Brownsville Public Library where adult literacy programs are in place. My volunteer job today is to sit with one of their students just to help out if they hit words or phrases that are… let’s say irregular.
English is rife with… ahem… idiomatic phrases. We know what they mean, even when they are the opposite. One of my college professors liked to point out the idiom “I’m so hungry I could eat a horse!” which is hyperbole and—as she said—just really jarringly peculiar!
Reading for the sake of reading is one thing. But in the USA, reading English is the gateway to many things: government and legal systems, contracts, job postings, medical instructions, and many more things… all more accessible if a solid command of English literacy is in place.
So, today, my #giveback activity is to sit with a lovely lady hoping to begin school to, one day, be a bilingual kindergarten teacher. She’s got a long, challenging path to follow over the next several years, and she needs English to get started.
I’m honored to be able to help.
I’ll be back tonight to say good night. See you then!
A Step Back by Jasmine Banks
I had the day off and Micah had so much overtime, they let him go at lunch time. We needed to go to Walmart for some things. I thought it would be cute if we twinned, and he played along.
I was telling him all about my call to Sasha with SwimFit yesterday. He’s as excited as I am. But he’s also got some concerns.
We were walking through Walmart, past the aisle with all the travel-size shampoo and sunscreen, and I was still talking about the call I was supposed to have later this week.
Micah picked up a bottle, turned it in his hand, and said, “I know I encouraged you to do this… but you need to keep something in mind.”
I stopped the cart. “What’s that supposed to mean?”
He set the bottle back. “It means… baby, I just don’t want you to get hurt. You’re excited. I get it. I’m excited too. But those people—” he paused, rubbing the back of his neck, “—they don’t exactly come from where we come from.”
I knew what he meant. “You mean… because I grew up in foster care?”
He sighed. “Partly. But also—look, it’s not fair, but it’s real. Most of the folks in that world are White, rich, and used to people like us serving them, not working beside them.”
I leaned on the cart. “You think they’re gonna look at me and see a charity case?”
The rest of this Chapter is exclusive to Patreon.
“I think they might not know what to do with you. You’re young, you’re beautiful, you’re smart—but they might not see all that first. They might just see ‘a girl from Brownsville’ and make up the rest.”
I let out a breath. “Micah… I already know the odds. I’ve known them my whole life. But if I don’t try, I’ll never know if the door was locked or if I just never turned the handle.”
He smiled a little, that half-proud, half-worried look he gets. “That’s what I love about you. You dream big even when the world’s small. You see “what could be” even when the “what is” is cloudy.”
I reached for his hand. “And I’m not trying to leave our world behind. I’m trying to make it bigger.”
He nodded, quiet for a while, then said, “Just promise me you’ll remember who you are. Don’t let nobody make you feel small, even if they got yachts and fancy clothes.”
“I promise,” I said. “And if I do get rejected—”
“Then we’ll still have us,” he finished.
I smiled. “Always.”
We pushed the cart forward again, the wheels squeaking like they always do. For a second, it felt like the aisle stretched all the way to the future—mine, his, and maybe something bigger waiting just beyond the doors.
Then he started pushing the cart faster—right into the women’s clothing section.
“What are we doing?” I asked.
“Seeing if they have swimsuits on clearance.”
“I thought you meant for me not to get my hopes up.”
He found what they had left and held up a pretty boring black one-piece. He held it up to me and nodded.
“What’s this about? It’s kinda ugly…”
Micah signed, shook his head, and looked at me. “There’s one more problem with you being a swimsuit model.”
“Micah, they’ll supply the suits I’m supposed to model.”
He shook his head. “Jasmine, you can’t swim.”
I rolled my eyes. “I already thought of that! I can learn.”
Good Night
Tuesday has ended, and I’m wearing leggings for the second time in three days! All the cool kids are doing it!
Outfit aside, tonight, I want to respond to a comment from Patreon. It was with regard to my anecdote about the 3 a.m. water run when we were aboard “Savannah’s Charm.”
“…thanks for including the 3AM conference at the fridge between you and Sasha… I agree [that] some melding of cautious prudence with relaxed practicality, a merger of diligence and freedom seems to have taken place.”
It’s been well over a year since we’ve been sharing close quarters. When it was just Sasha, Geoni, and I, a few weeks into our travels, we were comfortable enough to share hotel spaces without making things complicated. But, after we set sail from St. Croix with Josh and Clay a part of the mix, we began to carefully practice “cautious prudence” with regard to modesty issues.
Yet, the passing of time gave rise to understanding each other and being comfortable. To be sure, we were careful. We just agreed that a slipped towel or a gaping bathrobe wasn’t the end of the world. It just was clear that there was no cause to get fully dressed for a dash to the galley. A towel, robe, or blanket was more than enough.
So months later, had Josh happened into the salon while Sasha was à la sans in the galley, he would’ve stopped, turned around, and probably said something like, “let me know when it’s safe to come back.”
We stopped living frozen by our commitment to a modesty guided by a shared moral compass. Life together simply became relaxed and practical without any intentional immodesty.
Clay, Sasha, Geoni, and Josh have extended that attitude to sharing their current two-bedroom unit. They are careful, but not imprisoned.
I don’t know if this has shed any more light on the matter, but I would have said more in the original post had there been characters to spare.
May your wisdom allow you to follow your moral beliefs while remaining relaxed and at peace.
Good night.
Be your best you!

Just one more thought…
For readers new to AGI Stories, great care is taken to avoid words and phrases that the community standards check system might flag. At some point in the past, Sasha coined the phrase “à la sans” with regard to how she and I (Ailana) sleep. “A la” can be translated as “in the manner of” and “sans” means without.
So, being a la sans in the galley would be to have dashed there from her cabin directly from her bed without any… additions. She was grabbing water dressed “in the manner of without.”
