Chapter 36: COFFEE STOP by Hannah Madison

A feather loosed from a balcony on a windy day may find its way to any one of many places, its path varied by the whims of the breeze, currents of air pressed upward by a moving car. And another set adrift behind it might follow a path vastly different. I sometimes think we, people in this world, are like that.

Sometimes, who we meet can be as surprising as any uncharted path of a feather let fly. So today, my flight led me to an improbable encounter with a man from London. And, whereas any Manhattan coffee shop could claim to be a nexus for people passing through the city, it was at such a place we met.

Meeting alone would be far from uncommon. But meeting and connecting—now that is a different thing.

I stood in line between meetings with Will Robertson checking messages on my iPhone. I noted the feet in my view move, so I filled their space as a voice said, “Name for your cup?”

Thinking the question was to me, I said, “Hannah.”

But at the same moment a voice beside me said, “Andy.”

Eye contact with the barista made clear the cup would be his, but then he spoke again. “She can go next.”

His accent belied his homeland.

“Thank you… you go first.”

“What do you say we just go together?” Looking at the barista he said, “Put them on the same check.”

Offers to pay my half were rejected. We took a table and he asked about my job. I answered and asked about his.

“I’m a project manager. I’ll be here through next Wednesday.”

I had meant for my coffee to be to-go, but I also remembered that The Society wanted us to do research about troubles in the world. I explained that and he was about to answer when Will texted that the client wanted to start early.

“Well,” I said, “it would have been a great discussion.”

Andy smiled. “Still can be? How about we meet tomorrow for breakfast?”

We exchanged phone numbers so we could connect.

Be your best you!

Common Hamster

Chapter 36. Wow, how much time did you have before work? To wax philosophical like that! Bravo! But, wow! I can hardly form complete sentences until after 9am. You certainly made a connection. Good luck.

P.S. I knew I'd seen that face somewhere before. Zoom in and there's the name helpfully provided. Andy Cole. accservices. Interesting.
