HOLDING THE COURSE by Cindi Curtis—It’s been two days since I told Michael we could plan for me to visit him in Memphis after Christmas. Plan, I said. Like the decision was already made and final.

Yesterday evening, Michael and I played World of Warcraft and checked our vaults for the weekly rewards, as we usually do, and he said, “You know, if you decide that it’s too soon to come to Memphis, it will be okay.”

He opened the door. I was about to answer, but he blurted out something about WoW. “NOO! Same gloves as last week! What did you get?”

The door to escape my plan stayed open as I said, “Boots. Same as I have, but with ‘Indestructible’ added.”

That’s a tiny upgrade by the way. The door to escape boarding an airplane (or driving 1000 miles) was still open, and it was consuming my actual thoughts as some cognitive subroutine processed playing WoW.

“Hey…” Michael said, “…considering that your gear is so good to start with, consider it a win, right?”

“Sure,” I said. “Saves a little gold on repairs.”

“Right!”

We headed to the item upgrade building in WoW, but I was still thinking about the open door to back out of the trip. We were halfway there when the answer formed in my brain and traveled through my tongue and FaceTime to Michael.

“Hey… let’s stick with the Christmas plan for now… If we get through Thanksgiving and you don’t change your mind, let’s go for it.”

There was a blink of a pause, then he replied, “I doubt I’ll change my mind.”
