Chapter 37: SPECIAL BREAKFAST by Hannah Madison
I woke up today more excited than I have been in a long time. After having coffee with a stranger yesterday—a man named Andy Cole from London—we agreed to meet today for breakfast.
I have to be honest. A corner of my mind played with an idea: Could this be a thing?
I guess that means more about where I am than anything else, some sort of mindset or approach. I suppose it means my relationship radar is working.
Certainly, a man I've known for 20 minutes probably isn’t “the one.” But “the one,” I believe, is out there somewhere. Asking the question proves my radar is on.
So, we met at a cafe that’s near work. We exchanged small talk, then I got to the conversation that we hadn’t finished yesterday.
“So the Pay It Forward Society wants us to find out about problems in the world. Yesterday, you said London had some tough issues with homelessness.”
“Yes, that’s right,” Andy replied. “People think London is all shiny glass buildings and old brick charm, but you walk a few minutes off the High Street and you’ll see it—sleeping bags under bridges, cardboard beds in the Underground stations before security moves them on.”
“A lot like here,” I replied.
“No doubt,” Andy said. “And we have shelters, but they fill up fast, and a lot of the homeless won’t go to them anyway because they’re overcrowded or feel unsafe. Some are young, some my age, some old enough to be my parents.”
I nodded. “So it’s a problem touching people of all ages.”
“And it’s not just people without work—there are folks with jobs who still can’t afford a flat. The city’s brilliant, but it’s brutal if you fall behind.”
I told him about Stop-Gap Housing and the work they do with the working homeless.
Then, he asked me more about The Society. I told him what it was about and that we were doing our second mission over the weekend.
“Belize?” He smiled. “Mangrove restoration sounds interesting.”
“I think so, too.”
“Well,” he asked, “how about when you get back, you tell me what it was like over dinner? My treat, of course?”
Yeah… That happened!

Chapter 38: MISSION THOUGHTS by Emma Knox
Well, let me start by saying this nightie isn’t as saucy as it looks. It’s got a real soft liner, cept it’s the same color as my skin, almost. You might can tell from the picture. Of course I got it from the thrift shop.
Now, second, I want to say I’m only half as scared as I look in the picture. That’s not to say I’m not a little scared. I’m getting on The Society’s jet tomorrow and flying out of the country! I guess customs and passports, makes it feel like that.
I figure before we get back home, you’ll have had your fill of information about mangroves, so I’ll talk about tonight.
Shay Ryder called Hannah earlier and said she’d like to get pizza for us tonight. Well, I’ll just say it wasn’t from the $9.99 special place! It was from a place called L’Industrie Pizzeria. Addison said that was one of NYC’s most famous places, and had been recognized internationally as one of the top pizza places in the world! How about that?
There were so many kinds! And she didn’t hold back on how many, either. We had so much left over! When it was all done, Devon kept a whole pizza made up of slices from the left overs.
Now, about Devon. Well, he’s really nice, and so easy to get along with. I’ve noticed Shay gets real nervous around people, but then at one point I noticed Shay and Devon just standing there talking, calm and relaxed. Shay’s guard, Eric was there, plus his girlfriend, Tia, and for a while all four of them just stood talking while the rest of us ran back and forth between eating pizza and packing for Belize.
Anyway, it was really a great present she gave us. By the time it was all over, everyone was full, and all the bags were packed and ready to shuttle to the airport tomorrow.
Soon as I get off from the church, me, Noah, Addison, and Paul will load everything into the Expedition like last time… But…
Now, I’m back to being a little scared!
…this time we’re going all the way to another country.
I’m excited though. Sorry if I rambled again, but I just like to share what I’m thinking. Thanks for reading my story.
Be your best you!
