GOOD MORNING

The week has flown by, and I feel like it has left me in the dust! Friday here in South Padre Island will bring in some clouds and temperatures in the mid-80s°F—call it about 29°C! Meanwhile back in Lowell (where I grew up), the high should be around 50°F (10°C).

And that weather report was brought to you by Weather.com, your home for all things weather! (Not sponsored, but hey… if you know anyone… you know… connections!)

Back to being left in the dust…

I got out of the condo this week for a nice #giveback day doing literacy work. Then, yesterday, I had a great meeting with Jasmine Banks. Phone calls throughout the afternoon after we left Starbucks (Not sponsored, but hey… if…) made it final and official. A few details to work out, but the on-boarding process has started! Josh is handling most of the paperwork on that front.

Also, the movers are coming today to move Dad and Grammy’s furniture and appliances. After today, they will be living over on Red Snapper Street. I’ll spare you boring pictures of the truck, but today is the day!

Great stuff, but…

I came home to two text messages. One from the author with that space story I partially (mostly) ghostwrite. He had a huge brainstorm idea for a chapter to go in a few scenes back, and he’s so revved up, I’m afraid he’s gonna need some yoga and cut out coffee for a while. The other was from an editor on an article I put out to market on the Everglades, wanting some research and expansion of a section.

What does that mean for you?

I’ll be working today. I’ll check in midday, as I do, but it will be something I shoot here!

But I will be back, so watch for it!

CATCHING UP

I’m taking a break so I can check in. Jason came up with delivery pizza, so I had him take the picture for this post.

I’ve had a productive morning working on the space sci-fi project. I get questions about how ghostwriting works, so maybe this is a good time to say more.

Ghostwriting is getting paid to write something that someone else publishes under their name. A lot of letters are written by assistants and signed by the boss after review and tweaks. Ghostwriting fiction is a little like that.

With the sci-fi piece I’m working on, I get calls or messages saying something like this (Last time I think we called him Collin—not his real name): “Okay… do a chapter before the pirates arrive. Collin [does this and that]. Then he meets a woman from the supply convoy and they really hit it off. Make it feel like they might become romantic, but leave it open ended. She’ll come back into the plot after the pirate attack.”

I sit down with all the notes about his world, all the maps, ship diagrams, space station diagrams… Then I read the last few scenes leading up to the new one. Then I just go for it!

I then send a draft to the guy. He either edits or sends it back with notes. And it goes on like that. Hopefully for a long, long time!

I can’t share any of it because, by contract, it is “work for hire” and belongs to the payor.

But suppose I were to have my own fantasy-style story (which I don’t), I might write a paragraph like this:

Collin looked up the road to where he had heard the noise. The fall breeze rustled leaves across the wagon ruts masking any sounds that would reveal the source of the clattering that had alerted him. Just to play it safe, he drew his sword and settled it tightly into his hand.

Or something like that.

Okay, cold pizza might be good for breakfast, but tepid pizza for lunch? Not so much.

See you tonight!

NEW WORLD FOR US by Jasmine Banks

What a change in… everything. Micah and I don’t even know what to expect.

Yesterday, I was fearful as I got off the bus to go to Starbucks. I had a twenty in my pocket that Micah always leaves in the kitchen. He says it's just- in-case Jackson.

I didn’t need it. Sasha paid for everything—hers, mine, and Ailana’s.

Well, I already liked Sasha from talking on the phone, but it was my first time meeting Ailana. Turns out she might have been poorer than me. I was in the foster program, so the families always had to meet certain requirements. She said it was when she was about my age that she started modeling and things got better.

We talked for a long time, and it really felt like they were trying to convince me to take the job. Not like I was begging for work. Like they wanted to have me, and were trying to tell me it would be fine.

Sasha said they hadn’t ever thought of hiring anyone until I called that first time. So she thought it was only right that I get the job and see how things go.

Now, everything is about to change. They’re doing some work on the place where they live to build an efficiency condo for the Project Assistant. Me!

So, we’re gonna move. New everything. New stove, dishwasher, fridge, washer, dryer. New furniture. New…

…everything.

The pay’s nothing special, but no rent, no property taxes, no utilities, and no internet bill… That’s like a whole job separate pay check!

The only worry is Micah’s job. He can drive over every day, and Brownsville’s not too big compared to places like Houston.

The other thing is this house. We got to talk to Micah’s family about it, since we’re moving out. They might still want us to work on it. I don’t know.

I’m going to get a call from Josh Ryan. He’s going to have some paperwork for me to do for the hiring process. Just regular hiring things like the W-2 and I-9.

So, that’s going to happen today. I go back to work at the nursing home tomorrow. I have a 12 on Saturday to wrap up this week, then three 12s in a row for next week.

I’ll be putting in my two-weeks tomorrow.

GOOD NIGHT

Tonight I’m standing on the balcony of a nearby hotel. Jason, Josh, Geoni, and I had dinner in its restaurant, just to do something a little different.

I believe we can safely say the workweek has come to an end. Jason and I still playfully debate whether Friday night is part of the weekend or not. It’s gone on so long, we can’t remember who said it was and who said it wasn’t to begin with!

Now, for any of my readers east of the Atlantic, I believe we can say “happy weekend” officially.

Today was a great day for me, and I sincerely hope it was for you as well. In fact, the whole week has been good.

I feel really good about my idea to expand this diary with stories from the lives of all my friends and family. I’ve already received some kind, encouraging comments and messages about it. Like I said before, it means more content, not less of anything.

Also, I’m looking forward to Sunday and Monday! A friend I met in London last year is going to pay me a visit: @aimee_cole_ai Aimee Cole is on this “side of the pond” so she’s stopping by to see what this little Texas Gulf Coast town is like! We’ll try to do some fun things together that may or may not involve lifejackets!

So, with that, let me wrap up the day.

May your biggest conflict with others be funny and trivial, may good friends surround you, and may you give back to others as much as others give to you.

Good night.

Be your best you!

Good morning. Good morning to you. I am kind of jealous of this weather. Of course you are on a beach. Lucky! You've had a good week. Full of activity, with ghost writing and moving and giving back and Jasmine. And now more writing. Have fun and make it a good day.

Catching Up. Great picture, Jason! This is a terrific outfit! Nice. Non-hot pizza for lunch? Come on man. You realize that, now that you have teased it, you will have to write us a fantasy style something. Hope the client loves your work. Thanks for the update. Have a good afternoon.

NEW WORLD FOR US. Jasmine Banks. To Jasmine, glad you didn't have to use your just- in-case Jackson. I totally get you are nervous. But you will soon be among good people. It's a great feeling, isn't it? When you can tell someone wants you for a job? It gives you confidence. Logical response after your showing of courage in calling Sasha. It's a big move with new everything. So, Micah's job? Is it moving there, too? You are leaving your nursing work to go with Sasha. Just curious, is he making arrangements.?
