Chapter 47: THE DAY JOB by Merritt Gray
It’s back to the office for Hannah and me. The trip was great, but we’re exhausted.
Everyone else’s schedule is a little more flexible than Hannah’s and mine. Izzy has an office job, but she sometimes works into the evening with clients, so she’s technically on “flex time.” But we got decent sleep. It was just long, physical days of work.
Okay, on the plane to Belize when I said I’d give you details about the aircraft—well, here it is.
The Society’s Gulfstream G650ER is… honestly, it’s a flying contradiction. It looks like a luxury jet, but it’s outfitted like the kind of machine you use when you need to cross an ocean, brief a team, and still function when you land.
The forward section is all business—galley, storage, and two club seats where Emma and I ended up talking more than I expected. It’s the “come in, breathe, settle in” space.
Mid-cabin is where we spent most of our time. Eight full recliners set around two tables—big enough for laptops, maps, meals—whatever the day required. It’s weirdly comfortable, the kind of setup that makes you forget you’re cruising at altitude until the wings catch the sunlight.
Behind that is the lounge, which feels like the transition between “working” and “resting.” Two divans, soft lighting, and it’s where Izzy stretched out after the mud day. You can tell the designers knew there’d be trips where people needed somewhere to decompress before they attempted sleep.
And the bunks—yeah, they’re better than I expected. Three stacked on each side, one section for men and one for women. Memory foam, privacy curtains, little lights, charging ports. Compact, but not cramped. It’s not glamorous, but after a full day in the Belize heat? It felt like perfect engineering.
That’s about it, in a nutshell. Now, I need to get my head back into work mode!

Chapter 48: JUST DINNER by Hannah Madison
All day, my thoughts have been divided. A lot of them were still back in Belize. We spent a lot of time with our hands in the mud, but we did see a little of the land and culture—enough to leave me wanting more.
Some of my thoughts, though, were on tonight. I told myself it was just dinner—a meal with a man I had only talked to for less than an hour total, a man from London whose path had converged with mine by happenstance and with whom I’d struck up a notably fulfilling conversation.
Though I made that point very clear to myself, I don’t think all of me was listening. As I left the office, my feelings were alive with energy. He was waiting in the lobby.
“Good evening, Hannah.” His voice was steady and relaxed, and it washed over me, setting the mood for what would come. “How was work?”
By the time I finished talking about blueprints and markups, we were at the restaurant. We settled down and ordered, then he asked about Belize.
“I had no idea how important mangroves are to coastal ecosystems.”
He asked questions. He listened. He was thoughtful and truly engaged.
My brain spun up an internal dialogue. What’s going on here? Why does this feel so nice? …ships passing in the night… You’re just excited by something new. Take notes: this is the kind of man you’re looking for.
The kind of man… Rationally, he probably isn’t the man. But maybe?
While my internal dialog ran its course, so too had the conversation about Belize.
“Do you mind if I ask about where you grew up?” he said.
I told him about Scranton. He told me about London. I was on my third refill of iced tea, and we were still talking, getting to know each other… enjoying the time together.
The waiter’s third “do you need anything else” was a clear signal we needed to surrender the table. He paid the check and we rose, heading for the door.
“Hannah,” he said, “this was beyond enjoyable. Wednesday is my last night here. There’s a gala to which I was given tickets. Please… would you accompany me?”
Yeah… Now, I have plans for Wednesday!
Be your best you!
