Chapter 61: WORKING LATER by Emma Knox

Well, here I am in the living room in the morning checking in with everyone. There’s a group of volunteers coming to the church where I work tonight, so I don’t go in until after dinnertime.

Since everybody else is off working already, I thought I might just tell what everyone’s job is. I’ll start with me.

I have two part-time jobs. The main one is at New Hope Church. I go in three days a week to help with the homeless ministry programs. I sort donations out and do whatever little work that needs to be done. I also got on with Tom Jenkins’s theater that’s just downstairs working in the gift shop, but that’s just if someone regular takes a day off.

Kent owns an electrical company, and he’s got Devon working for him. Besides their hired-out work, they volunteer a lot for Habitat Housing, particularly the Stop-Gap Housing program that Izzy runs.

Now, I say she runs it because she is a social worker. She talks to all the families and helps them get off the streets and into the temporary housing, then she helps them work out how to get out on their own. You might remember that Shay Ryder works for Habitat Housing, too, but she’s over a different program.

Noah works for an ambulance company. He’s an EMT, and he’s trained to New York State’s highest category.

Jacob works at the Apple Store as a Genius. Ever now and then, he works on the floor.

Back to the theater, its full name is Crossroads of History Theater. Some folk say it’s like a museum on account of all the different stages going at the same time. Each depicts a different scene from American history. Addison is an actor there, and she’s also the director for the whole show.

That comes to Merritt and Hannah. They both work for NYC SysCo, which is an engineering company. You might remember that their boss is Will Robertson.

Of course all of us but Shay and Devon also work for The Pay It Forward Society whenever they have a mission for us. And that includes Paul and Rebecca who live down the street.
