GOOD MORNING

If you’ve been around for a while you know on travel days, I sometimes wake up in panic mode. Go! Go! Go!

And apologies to Cindi Curtis because I know my casual use of the phrase “panic mode” is nothing like yours! I have the utmost respect for how you face the challenges of your day-to-day life! You’re on fire! And—plot twist—when Jason lived in Memphis, he lived in those same South Bluffs condos where Michael lives now!

Okay, I have a plane to catch!

Not wanting to waste any time, I decided to multi-task. Selfie and hair-rinse simultaneously, coffee half-finished on the bathroom sink, suitcase on the bed, open and waiting for the last of my packing.

My laptop is open and I’m ready to bang out the caption for the post. The image is on the iPhone, so I’m literally seconds away from making the post once I get the words situated!

And, to be very meta, obviously, I’m out of the shower already typing the thoughts I had four minutes ago when I snapped the selfie! Don’t worry, I dried my hands before I started typing!

Now, time to get going! Micah took a half day off to get us to the airport, so everything is all set.

I’ll check in soon, so I’ll see you then!

Be your best you!

TO THE GATES

Jasmine and I are at the airport, bags and camera gear (in flight cases) checked through to Glacier Park International, and we are heading to the gate. We’re early enough to take time for a cup of airport coffee and get to the plane with ease.

As we worked our way through security, I had something of a flashback to summer of 2024 when Sasha contacted me asking if I’d like her help with my projects and travels. It was a new experience that led to a great friendship.

Walking with Jasmine today has that same vibe. If Sasha—and a few weeks later—Geoni are examples of what is to come, I’m certain Jasmine and I are going to have great fun. Not only in Montana, but in the months—hopefully years—to come.

I told her how I was feeling and she said, “Well, I’m hopeful, too. You know I was a foster kid, so, really never got close to anyone. Changed schools some. Then I went right to work whenever I could. I'm not trying to get pity, but just to say that meeting Sasha and then you… felt like the start of something I think I’ve missed out on.”

“I believe it is the start of something. Really, with you on the team, things can get going again. Sasha won’t be as stretched thin as before. Honestly… this is just great.”

We made it through security and have a coffee shop in our sights, so I’ll wrap things up now.

I’m not sure when I’ll be able to check in again, but you can count on a good night post, so see you then!

See you then!

DIFFERENT BEACH by Sasha Everett

First full day in St. Croix, and almost all of me is blissfully enjoying it. About ten percent is worrying about Ailana on her way to the land of deep snow and steep inclines!

Jasmine has been texting updates and Ailana called from the airport. I know everything is going well, and will be fine. Spinning off Ailana’s good night post last night… yeah, so long as they get there, they can make the rest up as they go! I’m sure there’s some camera store near Big Mountain, so even if…

It’s strange being apart after the last few months of traveling together. But I’m sure they will do great!

Clay and I got up, did a little house setup, and came to Mermaid Beach. I was feeling like “beach towel.” He was feeling like “swim in the waves.”

Compromise is part of marriage, so I went wading. I’ll definitely go back out and swim after I make this post. No regrets.

Just a little concern, though. The sea, with all its waves and currents, presents certain challenges!

From my brief time in the surf earlier, I’m happy to report that my bikini bottoms and I both made it safely back to shore at exactly the same time and to exactly the same part of the beach.

This is where I insert an advertisement for the SwimFit line of swimwear (which I do NOT have on). Having wiped out wakeboarding and waterskiing in one of our suits, I can tell you the tug of the waves would have been for naught!

I suppose I’ll add that we have some designs not necessarily meant for watersports, but for just being on the beach or side of the pool. But they might not be ideal for taking a fall off skis or diving from the high-board, but they can absolutely handle a casual wade in the waves!

Okay… Clay’s waving for me to join him, so, I’ll brave another trip off the safety of the sand.

Ailana should be in Montana in time for her goodnight post, so watch for that!

GOOD NIGHT

Jasmine and I are in our room, and ready to call it a night. Getting here was fairly routine, considering how much luggage and gear we checked through.

We arrived a little while before Jason, but we made the connection easily and rented an Explorer for the next few days. We’re set.

Dinner at Buchanan's Chop House, which is located at the lodge where we’re staying, was great. We talked about the shooting schedule for Wednesday.

Jasmine and I will watch Jason do the shots for the ski-resort newsletter, posing if needed. While we’re there, we’ll do the product shots for the defogger product. Then, we’ll head back to the lodge for their shots afterward.

After dinner, we headed to our rooms. We had just put down our suitcases when I could see Jasmine had something on her mind, so I asked her.

“Have you ever shared a room with a Black girl before?”

“Many times.” I told her about some of my experiences as a young model when we’d get shipped off to locations four to a room. “Why do you ask?”

She smiled and quietly said, “Look, I feel really accepted by you and everyone, but I’m really not used to that. Blacks in Brownsville make up a really small percent, and I guess I’m just always aware about race and wondering what people think.”

“Well,” I said, “if you ask me, the differences are often brands. Nothing that matters…”

“What do you mean?”

“I know Black girls buy products and makeup that White girls don’t and vice versa. Different brands that don’t matter. It’s like styles. They aren’t who we are. They are what we’re wearing.”

She agreed, of course. “I don’t mean to seem sensitive. I just like to know where I stand, I guess.”

We let the topic go as we got ready for bed and took a selfie for the goodnight post. But I felt like there could be better closure.

“Can I be honest?”

She nodded.

The rest of this Chapter is exclusive to Patreon.

“At twenty… your age… I had been modeling ad hoc for a few months. If I’d have known you, you would have been one of the people I thought had it made. A gorgeous girl with a wonderful husband and two jobs paying the bills… I was in ninth grade before I lived in what Dad called a decent house. I commuted to a college in Gary from our little town in a car that ran on prayers and fumes. For lunch, I’d grab a $1.19 bean burrito and a water.”

Jasmine forced a smile and nodded. “That was lunch?”

“Or PBJ, some days. By then, Dad kept food in the house. But, what I’m saying is I would have never looked down on you then. I would have probably longed to be your friend, if I knew you well enough to have seen your character… your morals and your values…”

“Were there many Blacks where you grew up?”

“Not many in Lowell. Lots in Gary. I can’t say I’ve had close Black friends, but modeling, I worked with… Black girls… and look… let me be really honest…”

“Okay,” Jasmine seemed to be relaxing.

“Instead of saying ‘with Black girls’ I almost said ‘I worked with them’ which feels like it’s othering, not accepting.”

Jasmine shook her head. “That’s splitting the hair pretty thin.”

“Well, I thought of all the girls I modeled with as people I wanted to be like, at that time. They were confident. They knew the business. We got worked hard, but we were all in it together. Long days… Crowded dressing rooms… Waiting in line for makeup… Sometimes, we had to share clothes or accessories…”

“So, you worked close with each other…”

“Yeah.”

“Like, what clothes did you have to share?”

“Anything and everything. Literally. On more than one occasion, the art director thought swapping shirts on the set was the best idea… get the colors in the right part of the shot. And ‘Okay, give those pants to her for the next shot. Hurry! Go change!’ Things like that. It was work. It didn’t matter who the other girl was, so long as the size matched.”

“I guess I’ll never model like that, will I?”

“I don’t foresee AGI ever working at that pace.”

“Okay… I could do it if I had to.”

I went on. “And when the job ended, we’d say ‘bye’ and go to the next one. Start over. My point is I didn’t think anything about things like skin color. Honestly, I didn’t. And I’m as comfortable with you as I am with Sasha and Geoni, already. I feel like we’ll get along great.”

Jasmine smiled. “I hope you don’t think I feel bad about anything. I think I bonded with Sasha over the phone, days before I met her.”

I thought that invited further thought. “You know… I’ve traveled and worked closely with Sasha for over a year now, and Geoni has been part of the team nearly as long. Obviously, we all come from different parts of the world, but when we hang out, go to church, work, or travel together, we’re just us—a little team that gets things done and takes care of each other.”

“I’ve seen how well you get along,” Jasmine replied.

“So don’t worry. You’ll fit right in, just as you are.”

“I’m just so much younger,” Jasmine added.

“Okay, granted… but don’t worry about that. Be you. Do you. And have fun. And at twenty-nine, I don’t feel like I’m over the hill or anything!”

Then, it seemed like she had relaxed, accepting that she was safe and respected. Our conversation went back to my earliest modeling days and I told her stories until I figured she was bored. But she kept asking questions!

Eventually, Micah called and she excused herself to the bathroom, but before she closed the door I heard her say, “Oh, it’s amazing! Really amazing. You have to come next time.”

And that’s a thought I’m going to sleep on!

Thank you for sharing this day with me. I hope it leaves you as satisfied as it did me.

Be your best you!

ADD. I never knew you wiped out during the wakeboarding. That is something to think about for your suits. Because it is always possible your pilot may intentionally try to make you fall...for fun. I think it's happened before. Very sweet of you to go back in the water with Clay.

GOOD NIGHT. Thanks for including a dinner mention. I'm a fan of dinner, myself. After dinner, that was an interesting conversation. I'll have to peruse that further. But I have to think that level of friendship and acceptance is the goal for most people.
