GOOD MORNING

It’s early, but Jason is already over at the ski resort shooting sunrise shots. Jasmine is in the shower, and I’m doing a good-morning selfie. I hope you have a great day, and have time to check in with me as things progress.

The plan is to knock off the three shot lists today. The defogger client only has a few requested shots.

The ski resort is the biggie! Like I said, Jason is already on that. They want to showcase the resort in holiday mode.

The lodge where we are staying has a pretty long list, too, but it’s contained to just this one location. Shots like the lobby, the rooms… nothing that would surprise you.

Jasmine and I have calls to a couple of shots—Jason wrote out call cards for the day just for the sake of making a plan and scheduling it. Jasmine is kind of excited by the formality.

“So, is this normal for modeling? Calls?”

I told her sometimes it’s a sheet with all the shots laid out, but that on our scale, the cards work great. If things go off track, he can pull a card from the stack and reorder it on the fly without whipping out an iPad or laptop.

He has a master set with all photography ideas and he gave us a subset with times, outfits, and locations.

To be honest, she has good cause to feel like this is an authentic professional photo session. I took a lot of small-scale jobs in my first years where the models did their own makeup and styling.

This is going to work. For us, at our size, with the clients’ request on the scale they are, this method is going to work. Models doing double-duty for styling… Each of us chipping in ideas that an art director would come up with… Photographer working out logistics…

All of the elements of a large-scale campaign are in place, but the duties are being shared by the three of us who are on location.

The point I didn’t know I was making is that this, our third such project, is proving the viability of our team doing work like this in the future.

Now, I need to get ready… for my first call. See you soon!

SHOT LIST

An observation… Sunny and 31 feels a lot different depending on if you grew up in Northwest Indiana or Southeast Texas. It’s a little cool for my taste. Jasmine is very, very uncomfortable.

But the shot list called for models in sweaters, so this is what it had to be.

When we were putting our coats back on, Jasmine glanced at me and smiled. “I can do this. It’s kinda fun!”

I was glad to hear that. And I won’t spoil her experience with stories about when it was more like work and less like this. I would guess there might be an occasion where we get a job to… I don’t know… something unfun like stand in stilettos for 8 hours with breaks only long enough to change shoes and eat a granola bar. (That happened!)

Turns out, according to Jasmine’s perspective, snow skiing reminds her of skateboarding, which (also turns out) she knows how to do. So, it wasn’t long before she figured snow skiing out fairly well. She explained some differences that I didn’t fully grasp, but I’ll take her word for it.

We grabbed the required model-on-the-slopes shots, and I’m sharing a few of them. Also, for the record, Jason wasn’t the only one back in that photography club in high school! His art minor, notwithstanding, I think I got a few good shots of him!

And, honestly, doesn’t he look like the poster boy for a ski resort?

We’re about to grab some lunch, then head back to the lodge for all the shots on that list. That will mostly be a Jason thing—no models needed for “hey, look at our cool coffee machine!”

I’ll be back later with a good night post, so see you then!

MY GIRL JASMINE by Micah Banks

Hey, Jasmine asked Ailana if I ought to make a post, so… yeah… here we go!

I’m at work and I have a little to say from my side of things. Man, am I proud of my wife! Yeah, I miss her, but it’s just a few nights.

So, I have two things to tell. I’ll start with here at work,I’ll switch to what we talked about before I came in today.

My buddy came up to me at the parts counter. “Bruh, I saw your girl in a hotel with that blonde woman she works for. How about that?”

“Yeah, they got a modeling thing out in Montana.”

“Don’t get this wrong, but I always thought she was hot looking.”

“Hey… that’s my wife.”

“Just saying she’s got a model look… I’ll leave it at that. So, this new job is for real?”

I told him it was and he was happy for me. Now, I’ll change the subject to when I talked to Jasmine before work.

“Everything okay?” I asked.

“Yeah, it’s great. We’re going to do all the photography work today.”

“Any surprises?”

At that, my wife giggled like a middle schooler.

“What?” I asked.

“I was surprised by one thing… Ailana don’t wear pajamas or anything.”

So, I guess I showed my hand a little. “How is that a surprise? You’ve been reading her diary posts for weeks now! It’s obvious, right?”

“Micah Banks! What have you been up to!” Her tone was playful, but it was a legit question.

“Hey, I’ve been reading, too. I guess I wanted to be sure you were getting in with good people before it was too late.”

“And,” Jasmine replied, “I hope you’ve decided I did!”

“Baby, I’m so proud of you for this decision, I can’t even figure where to start.”

“Really?”

“One-hundred percent!”

The rest of the talk was just about her plan for the day and her reminding me that my work clothes were in the dryer. Stuff like that.

So, there she is, out there modeling. And here I am, with guys in the shop looking at the stories. So, I’m pretty sure my island secret won’t be secret for long.

But it’s all good, right?

GOOD NIGHT

Well, I’m back in the room with Jasmine. We had a great day, and after dinner, we took a group picture—just playing with different colors and having some fun.

Once in the room, I started setting up for the goodnight selfie and Jasmine had some thoughts.

“You do a lot of these kinds of posts…”

“These kinds?”

“Blankets… Robes… Like now, just a t-shirt…”

I thought I’d share my perspective. “I share my life. Somewhere along the way, a concept came up—authentic slices of my life. Laundry… Working on the computer… Packing… I try to make cinematic images that go with whatever I’m doing. Just sort of ‘This is me right now, doing this thing, and I’m sharing that with you.’ That’s the idea.”

“I think people like that,” she said. “It’s totally real.”

“More or less. Like I put the t-shirt on for the selfie. Or I’ll just wrap up or put on a robe in the mornings.”

“You took a shot in the shower, though…”

“The camera was carefully aimed. That was part of that moment. Me, in a hurry… I’m trying to tell the story. Just being careful and thinking about what tells it best.”

We talked about the idea for a while and she seemed to embrace the concept. “So, you’re posing, but only to the point that you’re showing people how it really is—almost—at the moment.”

I said that was the idea, then she asked if she should have the same approach. I said that would be up to her. Maybe her story would be told differently. The point is to tell the story however works best for her.

After a long discussion, she had me take the picture of her—her before bed slice of life—and send it to Micah. He said he had no issues, that her nightgown looked like a dress if he hadn’t known better. So we shared it.

It’s Jasmine’s end to her first day as a professional model. Work well done. Time for sleep.

There’s a fine line between slice-of-life and… something else. We try to not cross it.

May you know your own story, know how it can help others, and know exactly how best to tell it.

Good night.

Be your best you!

GOOD MORNING. Jason is already out there getting it done. He is quite q guy. Sounds like everyone will be doing double duty on this job. But the team has already proven you can handle it. A smaller session is a great way to ease Jasmine into the model life. Thank you for the morning selfie. And the update. Have a great day!

SHOT LIST. I'm with Jasmine. 31 is very, very uncomfortable. Very. But you both do look great in your sweaters. You guys do look great on the slopes. Glad Jasmine was able to adapt her skateboarding skills to snow. And Jason absolutely every inch is the poster , uh, man for a ski resort. That great "I'm having a great time" smile doesn't hurt. Have a great rest of your day.

MY GIRL JASMINE. To Micah: I love that your friend said, "So this modeling job is real?". He didn't really believe it, that his work buddy was a real model. Real life there, sir. Also telling you she's hot. I'm laughing now at the teasing. It's gonna get worse when the swimsuits start. Get ready. You two are so cute. And your secret probably never had a chance as a secret. It's out there. Thank you for the update. Have a good rest of your day.

GOOD NIGHT. I have to wonder, Ailana, is there criticism for the post images? I didn't even know your slice of life approach. I thought it was a PR thing. You want people to see your posts and read them. Have to stop the scrolling, so use a catchy image. I didn't know the thinking behind it, but it makes the shots more authentic and artistic. Thanks. And thanks for the evening post. I bid you both goodnight. 🌙.
