GOOD MORNING

Well, here we go! If you stayed connected yesterday, you know our plans to go home today have changed. We’ve been diverted to Denver for another quick-turnaround photo shoot.

Jasmine and I are getting packed. We don’t have to rush, so we’ve been talking.

I asked her if she had any different thoughts about sharing her story in light of Naomi’s recruiting her into the modeling world.

“I guess me learning about all that,” she replied, “is part of my story now, right?”

I agreed with her. I think what makes for interesting content is equal parts what we do and how what we do changes us.

So for this post, getting dressed and packing are the “what we’re doing” but it is part of getting ready for the trip to Denver, which at the least, has changed our plans.

My approach to the diary is to share images that help tell the story. So, Jasmine and I are sharing these pictures. Our morning is the story and we hope these pictures—these mostly-authentic slice-of-life pictures—help tell it.

(And I said “mostly-authentic” because clearly we stopped what we were doing to pose. I think that’s fair. It helps tell the story, despite being slightly performative.)

Next time you see us, we’ll be at the airport trying to catch a plane to Denver. We’ll get to the hotel for tonight, then on Saturday, we’ll be shooting most of the day.

I’ll check in later, so see you then.

DENVER BOUND

As promised, we’re at the airport and heading for security. Everything is going to plan, which is a great way to travel, right?

Earlier, Naomi sent the shot requests to Jasmine (the manager, despite her uncertainty over that designation!) who shared them with Jason and me. She saw right away that it wasn’t extensive, but that there was a catch.

“So, The wardrobe has been sent over-night to the hotel. We’re shooting on a mountain trail… and how many sweaters? Three? Jeans… Leggings… Shorts and sports bra? Boots and sneakers… This seems a little bigger than I thought.”

“Well,” I replied, “changing outfits could take longer than getting the shots…”

Jasmine seemed to then process the fact she’d need to change wardrobe. “How do I change clothes if we’re on the trail?”

“Shoes off… stand on a bathmat on the trail… I bet you’ve done something like this before…you put on a big skirt, or wrap a blanket around you and change your pants. Or a beach towel works as well.”

“Oh… yeah, I’ve seen it done…” Jasmine was smiling and nodding.

I continued. “Change pants, put on the shoes for the next shot, then—here’s the tricky part—put a large blanket over your head, but don’t mess up your hair… under the blanket, change tops…”

“Why do I think you’re not making this up?”

I smiled. “I’ve done this… I don’t know how many times! In fact, I did it not too long ago for a picture in the diary.”

“So, it’s normal?”

“Well, on a small scale, maybe… And honestly, ducking behind a wall or tree works, too. Even in a car… But to play it safe, we’ll grab a blanket and bathmat.”

“I guess the job sort of puts a strain on being shy.”

The rest of this Chapter is exclusive to Patreon.

“We can go as slow as you feel comfortable, and on a really big campaign, there could be trailers on location used as dressing rooms. But, to be further honest, there were jobs on location where the process for the shy girls was to turn your back or face a wall and change your shirt.”

Jasmine nodded. “No one thought anything of it?”

“Not really,” I said. “We wanted to be picked for the next job, and the photographer had a schedule to keep… deadlines. Budgets.”

“Everyone… behaved?” Jasmine asked.

“Sometimes, people would push the boundaries, but we’d never see them a second time, or if we did, someone had taught them better. Naomi… and all the agents… they wouldn’t put up with that, and they’d tell the client who they wouldn’t want to see on a shoot.”

“I guess that makes sense,” Jasmine replied.

I didn’t want to mislead her, though. “I don’t know about other situations. Things could be different there. But for me, I got into art and business circles where the goal was to make money. The lines were clear. Quality products delivered on time and under budget guided everything.”

Jasmine let that sink in, then she seemed to put it all together into our situation. “So, that’s a good goal, you know… quality products… on time… under budget… So, outfit changes under a blanket makes perfect sense…”

“That’s definately a good way to look at it.”

Once we got to the airport, she looked over at me and sort of shook her head. I asked her what she was thinking.

“I moved into the condo last Friday. Since then you’ve marched me through the mud, and taken into freezing weather. And now we’re on our way to some mountain trail where I’m going to change outfits under a blanket. You don’t waste time, do you?”

“I hope it hasn’t been unpleasant!”

“No, it’s been exciting.”

“After this, probably we’ll slow down until after Christmas…”

“Which will be on a Caribbean island!”

“Yeah…” I nodded.

Jasmine looked down and shook her head. “I didn’t know what I was asking for when I called Sasha up out of the blue like that. I just thought I wasn’t going anywhere from where I was, and I couldn’t afford more school.”

“Now, we’re going, going, going, but we don’t know where!”

She smiled and nodded. “It’s good, though. Really good.”

PORT ISABEL by Kirina Yung

I’m having lunch with Eli at Pirate’s Landing in Port Isabel. I came down to look at a property and arranged a lunch date. The only disappointment was the real estate tour.

“It is too large,” I told Eli. “At least twice as big as I need.”

“What about the price?” he asked.

“Also more than planned.”

Last time I posted, I talked about an idea to open a second location of Sea Glass Gallery. I want to be closer to where Eli lives and works, as well as closer to Ailana Geven and the rest of her friends that are part of the SwimFit Apparel company.

“So, it’s a bust, then…” Eli shook his head.

“So it seems…”

“Something will come up,” Eli added.

“This place, though,” I replied, “is in the perfect location. The front entrance faces the street and there’s parking on both sides and in the back. It has curb appeal as well as convenient parking.”

“You’re sure it’s too big?”

I nodded. “I’m sure. I looked at the floorplan sketch. I want a gallery vibe, not a warehouse. Coffee shop, not grocery store!”

“Well, something will come up.” Eli looked confident. “As your friend if she knows of anything like it on the island…”

He was talking about Ailana. I thought about his idea and figured I’d give it a shot, so I sent a text. She texted right back that she was on an airplane and about to take off, but she’d let me know when she could chat.

After that, Eli and I focused on sharing our time and lunch. We’ve only been together once since Thanksgiving. Face-to-face feels so different. Even though we’ve called, FaceTimed, and texted a lot, lunch seemed like we were finally actually catching up with each other.

The waiter had cleared our table long before we felt ready to leave. We lingered by our cars wrapping up our last thoughts, kissed goodbye, and went back to life apart—Eli heading back to his office and me driving back to the north.

I’m holding on to the idea and the hope that he’s right. Something will come up.

GOOD NIGHT

I was in Denver last winter and had a chance to do some modeling then. It was a similar concept to this one: outdoor products in a mountainous setting. When I think about all that’s happened since then, it blows my mind!

And things are still changing.

A week ago, Jasmine joined the AGI team, and we’ve stayed busy ever since. We got to the hotel room a little while ago and started planning for tomorrow. Beyond tomorrow, no doubt, things will keep changing.

Earlier today on the plane, I got a text from Kirina. I called her back as soon as possible—she wants to open a new location of her coffee and sandwich shop called Sea Glass Gallery. She wondered if I knew of any locations on South Padre Island.

I said I didn’t, but that I’d look around. I went on to ask what had her thinking about an additional location.

She hesitated. I waited.

“Honestly, things with Eli are really good, but the distance between us is holding things back.”

“I understand that,” I said.

She paused a little, then continued. “And to be open about it, I’ve come to realize I need to… expand my social circle—actually, I need to have one.”

We talked about that for a long time. She traced her life from early years through the K-pop years, and into her break from it.

“I know we’ve not spent much time together, but every time we have, it’s been great. I like what you and AGI stand for.”

We talked longer, then I just decided to make a nothing-to-lose offer. “Look—on the 20th, we’re all converging in St. Croix. Why don’t you go, too?”

More conversation followed, but she ended up tentatively deciding to join us. Undecided were two things. How long could she stay and whether Eli could go with her.

I told her that Jason and I would be in separate units at the resort, so she could stay with me and Eli could stay with Jason. We ended the call with the idea that something would, indeed, happen, and the details would be finalized asap.

So, change continues to be on the horizon—And I think it’s great.

May you ever grow into new opportunities and friendships.

Good night.

Common Hamster

GOOD MORNING. Hello Ailana and Jasmine. Glad to see everything going as planned. Of course, it's "slightly performative". You're posing "mostly authentic" or whatever. No complaints from the crowd.

DENVER BOUND. Great sweater! Everything going as planned sounds like a...plan. Nice jacket, Jasmine. Like those earrings. You wear that jacket well. Modeling. It's not just a job. It's an adventure. With interesting content. Fasten your seatbelt, Jasmine, stow your tray table, and enjoy! Have a great rest of your day, you two. Three, sorry, Jason!

PORT ISABEL by Kirina Yung. Hello Kirina. I don't know about your floor plan, but I would recommend you broaden your scope. One of my favorite burger joints has local for sale art displayed above the tables and booths. It works. I'm not saying go that far, but a coffee shop with seating interspersed with the art displayed seems like a natural conversation starter. My two cents.

GOOD NIGHT. Love that gorgeous red robe. Nice!! Um...ok, I'm sure you can help Kirina find the perfect place. She does need some help. And, wow, St. Croix for her and Eli?! Whew! That horizon is gonna host a full blown bonding experience, isn't it? Glad you made it without a hitch. Presumably Jason, too. Sorry, man. Ailana, I bid you goodnight. 🌙.
