LESS HOURS—MORE STRESS by Isabella Martinez

I’m trying to keep my hope going. Sometimes, it’s necessary. This is one of those times.

I work in a clinic, a small office in Brownsville not too far from our home on Florencia. I handle front desk and administrative assistant duties.

I got a shock this morning when I got to work.. The office manager wanted to talk to me. I knew it wasn’t going to be good by the way she started.

“Things aren’t good budget-wise right now. We’ve had a lot of non-paying patients this quarter… third quarter, too… and insurance reimbursements are way behind. Plus, the one-time-grant from the state ends with the fiscal year.”

She went on to tell me they had to cut expenses. We’re part of a larger healthcare provider network, so the doors won’t close to patients.

“But,” she continued, “we have to cut a lot of costs, and personnel is one of them. “I’m sorry to say this, but you’ll have to go down to 30.5 hours a week… but you can keep your health insurance and benefits.”

“You’re cutting my hours?”

She looked down. “And we lost a lab tech. Daniel’s being pulled out and being sent back to the hospital. And we lost the receptionist—full stop. Nurses and… everyone… will have to work out coverage.”

She repeated that she was sorry and that there was nothing to be done. I get it.

From the business side of things, it’s all about the numbers, and it’s a sound fiscal decision.

From my side of things, it’s also about the numbers, and this cut is going to strain my finances badly.
