Chapter 09: MEANINGFUL DAYS by Izzy Duffy

The year to come, 2025, will see me turn twenty-seven. It has been a good year. I’ve come to a place that feels meaningful.

A year ago, I managed to finish my master’s in psychology from Pepperdine University. That degree opened one door and partly closed another.

In 2016 at the age of seventeen, I began doing swimsuit and sports modeling. It might sound exciting—and at first it was—but it was a lot of hard work. Nine years later, I needed to back off. I needed a bed I would sleep in for more than two nights, one that would be mine. And when the sheet came off the mattress, I needed it to be my job to put it back on—not the hotel housekeepers.

I told my agent, Naomi Prior, that I needed to step back. She kept my book open—left the modeling door ajar—but I told her it would have to be very, very occasional. I’ve done a few jobs this year—catalog work mostly. You might have seen me with Ailana Geven in Paris…

With a master’s in hand, I went to work here in Brooklyn for Habitat Housing. I do social work for its Stop-Gap Housing program. I help working families that are homeless get off the streets, then help them work their way into something permanent.

That really feels like it means something. I end each day knowing I’ve done my best to do something good.

The past year has also helped me find a meaningful romantic relationship. Kent Marlon has helped Habitat Housing for a long time, so it was no surprise that our paths crossed. And crossed again. Along the way, our feelings for each other grew into something far more than working together to help the clients.

We’re definitely thinking about where this goes. Honestly, we’ve thought that out pretty well. I guess the question is when will it go, not where!

Lastly, there’s the Pay It Forward Society. I don’t have much to add to what the others have said on that. I’m honored to be part of it, and looking forward to whatever happens there.

Be your best you!

Chapter 09: AT LEAST MOVING by Shay Ryder

I’m not even sure I should be making an update post. I’m not even sure I belong with the group, but I was at Crossroads Apartments checking in with Izzy, and Hannah said I should do it.

I guess if I had to sum up my life as an update, I’d say at least I’m moving. I wish I could say I was moving forward. I’m not sure Mother would think I am. She’d probably say I’m walking in place.

I grew up under the expectation that Carol Ryder’s daughter should become something important, someone at the center of Chicago’s social scene. Running a program for a New York non-profit wasn’t what she had in mind.

But she salvaged the family reputation. Charity work is good work, highly respected among her most elite friends. I’m sure I come up over bridge games—”What’s Carol’s daughter up to these days?”

I love my work and the people I work with. Izzy is amazing. Mia Larki, the agency’s accountant, is wonderful. My security team feels like a gang of big-brothers.

I feel really close to Kent Marlon. I’m so happy he and Izzy got together. That seems really nice.

I, however, have nothing more than the fiction of an idea about romance. Some time ago, Devon Collier came into the office needing help. I don’t know why, but I felt connected to him at once.

We stay in touch. I think about texting him throughout the day, and sometimes I do. I always feel like I don’t come off very well in text, but he is always nice in his replies.

I even worked out a lunch date, but he didn’t know it was a date. I guess it was a double date, because Kent and Izzy were there. Devon works with Kent now and I work with Izzy.

Okay, so that whole lunch date thing shows you just how bad I am at even talking about social things. I wish there had been text messaging when I was in high school. I could have memorized how to do it better.

So maybe Mom would be right. Maybe I’m going around in circles, but at least I’m moving. Maybe one day, I’ll be moving with someone special.

Chapter 09: AT LEAST MOVING by Shay Ryder. Good morning, Shay. Your mother's elite friends would certainly respect your work. As you said, it is social goodwill in their world. But why is the idea of romance a fiction? You're a beautiful woman and I'm certain destiny has a plan for you. Good hearts are valued for that goodness. And Devon? You said yourself you felt a connection. I think he felt the same. I'd say a seed was planted. And...seeds grow. I disagree that it's a fiction. Hannah was on point when she suggested you post an update. After all, you are part of the team now. Take care and have a great day.
