Good Morning

Good morning and happy Tuesday! I hope everyone rested as well as I did. GOOD MORNING—Good morning and happy Tuesday! I hope everyone rested as well as I did. My all-day-on-the-beach adventure yesterday was really satisfying. Also satisfying was showering all the sand off when I got back to the cottage for the last time.

It feels like our time here in St. Croix is flying by. Everyone has had a great week. We have until Saturday, so it’s not over yet!

Today’s plan is pretty low-key. No axe throwing that I know of.

Geoni thought a couples day would be nice, so we all picked things to do. Jason and I are going for a hike. I think something like that is in the works for Geoni and Josh.

I suppose you’ll have to watch for my midday report to find out what the final decisions end up being.

Meanwhile, I need to get ready. Ponytail for a hike? I think so!

Thanks for being part of my morning. I really appreciate all of your support and encouraging words!

See you soon!

OUT AND ABOUT

As promised, I’m checking in with a little update on what everyone’s doing today. And I have pictures!

Jason and I took a hike. There are some trails near the resort, so we packed a picnic, water, etc. Of course, there’s a spare back-up battery for our phones! Now, we’re out here and really having a good time!

Josh and Geoni took a drive and stopped at a scenic area. They found a place alongside one of the roads and made their way to someplace picturesque. Geoni set up her camera on a tripod and they posed for a lovely shot! If you ask me, Josh is always happiest when they are together.

Izzy and Kent are doing the beach thing today. There was also a long conversation about sunscreen that I only caught part of. Their picture is courtesy of finding a friendly stranger and asking them to take the shot. Camera phones have come a long, long way since Jason and I were chasing each other around Buckley Homestead, learning to take pictures in 9th grade!

Micah and Jasmine decided to hang out—together—at the resort. We’ve dragged them here and there all week, so they just wanted to be together and enjoy the resort. Micah has been honing his iPhone-ography skills, as you can tell! Jason gave him a couple of tripods: one regular size and one table-top. I think he and Jasmine are having a lot of fun!

Finally, Sasha and Clay stayed at their house. I did overhear them talking about Sasha learning to fly Clay’s drone, so that might happen. Just something to do together… Their house is really nice, and I don’t blame them one bit for just hanging out.

So that’s what’s going on today. As I said earlier, I really appreciate everyone’s thoughts and comments. It makes doing this a lot more fun!

See you tonight!

COULD HAVE BEEN WORSE by Vanessa Lenen

Lunch with a complete stranger whose opening line was, “Do you believe in love at first sight?” Sure… why not?

It actually was far from terrible.

He arrived at the designated time, a smile on his face and a CDC folder under his arm. “Good afternoon, Dr. Lenen.”

I sort of faltered my guard. “You’re buying me lunch. You can call me Vanessa.”

“That will be tough…” He smiled and followed me to the table.

“Why’s that?” I asked.

“I’ve known Dr. Lenen for over a year.” He tapped his folder.

“Now, you sound a bit scary.”

“I started working for CDC in 2024. I was assigned to review field research reports, and analyze infectious-disease data.”

“I see…” I started to get the idea I was about to be embarrassed.

“Well, there seems to have been this nasty strain of typhoid fever that was dreadfully resistant to antibiotics In Tibet.”

I sort of was staring at his folder. “I think I heard about that.”

“You might have! Dr. Lenen, I sat there every day hoping one of your reports would hit my desk. Your data… yeah, that was great… Your side notes! Made my day!”

“My side notes?”

David opened the folder. “I went to the office last night and pulled some of your reports. Here… ‘Data… data… data… Other Details: It should be noted that the burly Tibetan farmer whose sample I took cried like a baby when the needle went in.’”

“Okay…” I was blushing so bad. “It was a long, hard grind, and I was trying to keep my motivation. Who reads the notes in the ‘Other Details’ box? Who does that?”

“Well, once we noticed…”

I cut him off. “We? We? As in plural?”

“All of us sort of made you out to be the field agent rock star.”

“Dr. Gregory, you’re kidding, right?”

“Absolutely not. There was one guy, Mitch… he found some journal article you wrote and blew up the picture. He kept a list of your best ‘Other Details’ on the side of his cubicle…”

“Okay, that’s super creepy.”

“I was just a quiet fan. There was a girl on the team that was also a big fan—Lora. She and I started seeing beyond the “Other Details” into what must have been hard, challenging work… I came to admire your research, your passion for exact details and accuracy. And your “Other Details” too.”

“So what you’re telling me is you had a crush on some journal photo and stack of lab reports.”

David laughed. “Yeah, pretty much! It was innocent. Like thinking about Princess Leia or something.”

“Star Wars?”

“Yeah, her.”

I sort of gushed. “I love Star Wars! Now that I think about it, you’re probably a Han Solo type!”

He laughed. “I’d say more like Chewbacca. Or Jar Jar Binks.”

We talked about Star Wars long enough to get our orders taken, then I admitted, “You know how embarrassing this is?”

“Well, it was a good year. But then after your Brazil trip, no more reports. We figured some other CDC office was getting them.”

“I went to India. Not much research. Lots of bandages and vaccinations. It was a community health clinic. I’m trained as an Advanced EMT so I could start IVs and that sort of thing. I helped the doctors and nurses.”

I told him more about that, then they served our food.

“Vanessa, when I saw your name on the Symposium schedule, I decided I’d find you and see if maybe we could… do this. I’m not crazy, but I feel like I could read between the lines that you’re fun. And, obviously, you’re a great scientist. I figured the worst thing that would happen if you agreed would be we’d have a meal, talk about bacteria and go our separate ways. But this… has been nice, right?”

“It has,” I said. “I’m still sort of spinning about the idea your office had me up on some pedestal.”

“Your notes made us smile through data that was otherwise boring… and scary in a pandemic sort of way. A little light in the shadows of our work.”

“I guess writing them was the same for me… Trying to remind myself that the whole world wasn’t on the brink of extinction…”

“Just that village you were in,” he said quietly.

“They kinda were…” I forced a smile. “Here in the states, we just assume the water coming out of our pipes is safe…”

David nodded, but changed the subject back to the present. “Dr. Lenen… Vanessa… What do you think? Can we do this another time?”

“We’re not even done with this time yet,” I said waving at our plates of food.

“Okay, granted…” he said.

I took a bite, chewed, and swallowed. “Look, you probably are crazy. But I think I’m okay with that. How about I buy you dinner tonight—we talk and drink coffee. Then we see how that goes…”

“That’s a deal.”

I glanced at the time. “Don’t you have a presentation in about an hour?”

He nodded. “I do. I did a meta-analysis of vaccination efficacy… You said you signed up.”

“I did. I’m interested in how the boosters impacted immunity versus just getting a single dose.”

“Okay, so…” David replied, “lunch now… my presentation… the symposium’s closing assembly, then dinner… and then…”

I completed his sentence. “Then, we decide if we’ll meet for lunch tomorrow.”

I didn’t say so, but I’m pretty sure we will.

I also didn’t say it, but it’s a really long way from NYC to where I’m planning to go next—back to Mom and Dad’s to start shopping out my resumé…

Good Night

I have come to the end of the day, and I have to say I feel satisfied and at peace. There wasn’t anything particularly special—just the sum of little things that added up to a wonderful day.

Izzy and Kent went back down to the beach again. After dinner, they took a big blanket and went to watch the waves and listen to the sound of the tropical night.

Jason just left a few minutes ago. We spent the hours after dinner sitting on the patio. Talking. We agreed we’d keep our eyes on the starting line of a future together. We agreed that some random Tuesday would be fine. Neither of us feel like being a cliché.

“What about a Wednesday?” His question was playful and easy.

“That would work, too,” I said.

We made hot cocoa—as if the climate calls for anything hot—and found marshmallows to melt in it. We sipped. We laughed.

Then things between us got very quiet. A few minutes passed and he sighed.

“I should go…” He kissed me one more time and stood up. “I’ll be thinking of you. Bring Izzy over in the morning and Kent and I will make breakfast.”

So that’s how the night ended. Not with drama, but with a steady resolution to keep going.

May you come to the end of your day with satisfaction and peace and may your sleep restore you and prepare you for tomorrow.

Good night.

Be your best you!

COULD HAVE BEEN WORSE by Vanessa Lenen. Hello Vanessa. Well, that was an interesting lunch. Could be some romantic motives, certainly professional interest. What does your intuition tell you? BTW, I didn't know you were an Advanced EMT! On top of your other accomplishments! Very impressive. Well, I hope you find Dr. Gregory's presentation informative. Take care.

Good Night. When the sum of little things add up to a wonderful day, that is special in itself. I'm actually glad Kent and Izzy went back down to the beach. Tropical evening, sky full of stars, they are living in the moment. Happy for them. I think Kent said earlier he appreciated your invitation, although he seemed a little intimidated by it all. I think he's a good guy. Very happy you and Jason are talking about moving forward. And making breakfast? When a man is happy to make breakfast for a woman...Thaank you for your thoughts and the evening post. I bid you goodnight. 🌙.
