GOOD MORNING

It’s our second day in Houston where we are working with the Houston Food Bank. I’m doubling up on getting ready and making a good-morning post so I can squeeze in an hour of work before we head out.

I’m sure this won’t surprise anyone who’s been to the beach, but I brought a lot of sand with me from St. Croix! I found some stuck to my face soap just now! Could it be a new skin thing? Some kind of Caribbean exfoliant?

Not to be confused with a defoliant—a totally different thing. But, thanks, anyway, English language!

I digress…

See, this is why I’m never caught up! I chase rabbits and end up in totally the wrong field.

So, let me close this one out. I’ll be back later with some information from the food bank. See you then.

SHIPPING BOXES

We are all back at the Houston Food Bank, helping distribute food to people who need a little help. It’s been a good day, so far.

Yesterday, I told everyone what the food bank does and how volunteers can help. When donations come in, they have to be prepared to go out to where they are needed.

Once the boxes are inspected, sorted, and sealed, they don’t just sit on shelves here. They head out into real neighborhoods—through partner pantries, community centers, schools, churches, and mobile distributions.

Some boxes become emergency food for families who suddenly find themselves in a tough spot. Others support seniors who can’t easily get to stores, or kids who rely on meals outside of school. Every box has a destination and a story, and knowing that makes the work feel personal in the very best way.

A few of the partner agencies we heard about include places like BakerRipley, Catholic Charities, and local YMCA branches. Each group knows its community so well, and together they make sure the food actually reaches the people who need it most.

So that’s the full process. Donations come in, get sorted and packed up to go out where they are needed most. As I said, most large communities have places like this and in small towns, churches and other organizations step up. Wherever you are, you could find a way to help. And yes, money donations are always helpful.

Now, I’ll get back to work, but you can count on me checking in later for a good night!

See you then!

WHERE DO WE BELONG? by Micah Banks

I got a call from my folks about the house we were using that had belonged to my grandma. When the family said we could use it, we agreed to keep it up.

We did a lot of repairs and improvements before we moved out. Well, the family is ready to sell it, so they asked us to come over and get out anything we wanted and throw away anything that wasn’t worth keeping. Then, some of the others will come take away all the furniture and so on.

Jasmine sat down at the table like I seen her do a million times. I just stopped and looked at her. Like I’ve done a million times.

“Are you happy?” I asked. “Being out of here?”

She didn’t blink before she answered. “I was happy here with you. And I’d be happy anywhere you are.”

Yeah, I’m pretty lucky to have a wife like that. Then, I thought about our vacation with the AGI people.

“Jasmine, do we belong where we are now? I mean… Like, is this where we’re supposed to be?”

She looked down and shrugged. “I don’t know. First time I ever felt like I belonged anywhere was when you married me after I aged-out of foster. This house was the first place felt like home.”

“How ‘bout the condo now?”

She got up and stood at the sink looking out the window. “It’s starting to. Maybe when the hammering and sawing stops.”

I went to her side. “You worked out us having a whole new life. I can’t even tell my cousins what all we did for vacation. They’d call it bragging or lying or both!”

“You should tell ‘em ‘bout golfing.”

“You should tell ‘em about going to nursing school. Indiana State University… online…”

“It will take a while, but it’s just about getting the bachelors…”

“So you’re happy with your decision to work for AGI?”

She kissed me quick. “I’m happy with you. AGI just gave us new friends and made our lives easier.”

GOOD NIGHT

Good evening, everyone. I’m calling our time at the Houston Food Bank a success. The six of us were only a small part of a big process, but we felt good about what we did. And I hope you enjoyed being here with us!

I have a huge surprise for some of you. Although there is a Denny’s nearby, we opted to have dinner at Waffle House. You know you must do that sometimes!

All six of us are here—Jason and Josh are at a booth with me; Geoni, Sasha, and Clay are at another. I would be denying the truth if I said Jason and Josh weren’t outlining a couple of articles about Houston. Even with just his iPhone, Jason can capture great editorial shots to go with the stories.

Meanwhile, my email inbox is overflowing with notes that will add up to a couple of full days of edits and writing. To be honest, there’s something comforting in knowing I have that coming up. I’ll work on it over the weekend and try to be done by the end of the day no later than Tuesday.

Some of you have commented and messaged that you really like the travelling we do. Do more, some have said. You have been heard.

You might recall that there were some Christmas wishes shared about going places and seeing new things. Sasha is cooking, already!

I’ll wrap up by saying again how grateful I am for you, for your support and encouragement, your wise advice and interesting ideas, and for you being here day by day to see what the gang and I are doing. You are why we exist.

May you always know how you’re having a positive impact on the people around you, and may you feel pride in the things you do and give to others. May you see the fruits of your investments as the people around you grow—into better versions of themselves.

Good night.

Be your best you!

GOOD MORNING. I love that you brought back sand from St. Croix. On your face soap, no less. Instead of chocolate in your peanut butter, you have sand on your soap. Brand new invention. Enjoy.

WHERE DO WE BELONG? by Micah Banks. Lots of changes happening to you two all at once. And now, to face selling your grandmother's house? That is a lot to deal with. But you have Jasmine at your side. You are one blessed man, as you already know. And more changes are coming. I believe there is nothing the two of you can't do, as long as you do it together. Take care, you two.
