ON TRACK by Jordan Warner
Well, I’m pretty sure Cindi has lost her mind! We went to her house to get her car. I literally love it. I think everyone from Memphis should pack up and move here. Carter is half in agreement.
Nevertheless, we got her Prius and set out. It was around noon when we actually pulled out of the driveway. We worked the phones continually as we drove all afternoon. Honestly, we got a lot done. The Memphis clients responded with a few needs and wants—we took notes and created to-do lists for everything. There’s a good number of billable hours in there.
We reached Raton, New Mexico, which was our goal, and checked into the hotel. Nothing spectacular, but definitely a good choice.
We had dinner—K-Bob’s Steakhouse—and the conversation was very pleasant. We talked about the work, but the vibe was social. We talked about Cindi’s house—with awe—and discussed how she must have felt living alone, the draw of Michael transplanting her to Memphis, and how much she has grown since then.
On the way to the car, I felt the need to once again be honest with Carter. “Today was fun. We got a lot done, and I enjoyed the company.”
Carter looked over and nodded. “It was fun. I think we’re on to something. We synergize better face-to-face.”
You know… I have a hard time acting like a grown up. I try. I really do. But…
“I could do face-to-face more often. Synergizing seems like a good idea.”
Carter may or may not have gotten the double entendre. I halfway hope he didn’t—because joking about kissing might’ve been…too much.
Carter looked at me—his smile revealed not a single one of his thoughts, and neither did his reply. “I’d go for that. I think it would be fun.”
“I do, too,” I said.
We walked a few steps more and Carter stopped. “Hey… Jordan…”
“Yes?”
“I really like how you’re honest about what you’re thinking. Like telling me that you enjoyed the company today. It’s refreshing to know where you’re coming from. You know what I mean? I don’t have to guess what’s going on with you. I really like that.”
“Thanks…” I smiled and wished I could have thought of something more meaningful to say.
So, we’re heading back to the hotel. We already decided we’d hang out in the lobby for a couple hours, then we’ll try to get on the road early tomorrow. We have a LOT of road between us and Memphis.
And that means a lot of face-to-face time—talking and working.
