Chapter 39: THE POINT OF IT by Merritt Gray
According to Paul Charm, we are 25.5 hours away from “wheels up” to Africa. He will be taking those who can go early over tomorrow afternoon and plans to preflight the jet so we can be out of the hangar by 6:00 p.m.
Emma, Addison, Jacob, and Noah are in the early group, having arranged work so they can be off. They will take all our luggage to the plane, too. Izzy, Hannah, Kent, and I—along with Will Robertson—will be picked up by Rebecca, and as soon as we get there, we’ll board and take off.
The whole point of the trip is to raise awareness about a worldwide problem. While Addison’s idea for a bikini water brigade might have been an attention grabber… I’m not sure how much of the actual information would have been noticed.
Most people who live in the developed world have no idea how rare their normal is.
If you can turn a handle in your kitchen and get clean water—every time—you are living in a global minority.
Across the world, billions of people still lack safe drinking water. In some regions, the nearest reliable source is miles away. In others, the water exists, but it isn’t treated—so it comes with bacteria, parasites, heavy metals, or industrial runoff. And it isn’t just “remote villages.” It’s towns, schools, clinics, and entire neighborhoods where infrastructure is fragile, neglected, or overwhelmed.
Even major cities in some areas battle bad water regularly. In cities like Cairo, clean water isn’t a hand pump—it’s treatment plants, aging pipes, and last-mile safety.
The Nile may be the source, but access isn’t equal. Clean water means treatment plants, pipe repairs, and last-mile safety. Groups like UNICEF, USAID, WaterAid, and the World Bank fund the work behind the river and the tap.
Water changes everything. Health. Education. Work. Dignity.
Be your best you!

Thank you very much for your help underwriting the cost of producing AGI Stories content. You can be sure that your paid membership is valued greatly! At the time of this post, not counting hardware, AGI Stories racks up expenses of just over $100 per month.
At this time, most of that cost is being covered by Patreon members like YOU.
While most of the content on AGI Stories is free and much of it is public, the hope is that reserving a few pictures and small sections of the post for you is a modest indication of gratitude!
