Chapter 57: Not Snowed In by Emma Knox

I’m standing here looking out at Brooklyn and I’m amazed. Being from Mississippi, seeing so much snow is a bit of a marvel. And seeing it plowed away is unthinkable.

It’s about 28° right now and cloudy. I’ve been in weather this cold a few times each year. Didn’t like. Don’t like it.

Hannah and Addison act like it’s just another ordinary January day. Me, Noah, and Merritt were saying it's far from ordinary for us.

This morning, before everyone went to work—like it hadn’t even snowed—I was setting out muffins and overheard Noah and Merritt talking. (We didn’t make a big breakfast, but Addison and me still like to work out something so everyone can have an easy morning before they go off.)

Noah was telling Merritt about his shift yesterday.

“We pulled up to the nursing home. No biggie. Then my partner saw this CNA walking around sick. Nasty welts on her skin. She was flushed like she had a fever… My partner… She took one look and knew it was mpox”

Noah told all about getting her to the hospital and the fuss the ER doctor had when the EMT girl told him what he should do about the sick girl.

“Well, turns out she’s dating a doctor that works for CDC. She called him. He called… everyone… He showed up with his badge and took over the scene. And it turns out, she’s got two PhDs. One in microbiology and one in immunology. She’s done research and written papers on mpox.”

Merritt shook his head. “What’d the ER doc think about that?”

“I don’t think he knew…knows…or cares. I told her she was going to be in trouble with him.”

“What did she say?”

Noah smiled. “She said she’s interim. She only has a couple shifts left, and she said they could fire her. She’s got a research job waiting in Texas.”

By then, I was part of the conversation. “Sounds like a crazy day.”

Noah nodded. “Crazy… You can just pick up something like mpox on a cruise… I gotta find out what happened at the nursing home, but CDC guy was on top of it all.”

Well, that’s about it for now. See you next time.

Be your best you!
