Chapter 59: STRANGE DAY by Hannah Madison

The fact that I am crawling through wet heating ducts isn’t the strangest part of today. But, I’ll start there.

I had on a nice gray skirt and blue silk blouse when I got to work this morning. One of the engineers in our department, David Stewart, called me over.

“How would you like a half day off, full pay?”

I shook my head. “Why do I think there’s a catch?”

He explained that I needed to inspect some HVAC damper controls—basically, whether they could be used or needed to be replaced. “Grab some overalls from the equipment room before you go.”

I went home to change, and my phone rang—Shay Ryder. “Hi… um… how are you?”

Small talk followed, then she said, I was talking to Devon about you saying I’d liked that we were getting to know each other before Christmas. But… well, you know… so… anyway…”

I said, “I kinda thought you were focusing on Devon.”

“Yeah, but, I… I was. So, what do you think about tomorrow after work—you, Devon, and I going for pizza? If you can, of course. Or if you don’t have plans.”

I told her that sounded great. Still not to the strangest part. That happened after I changed clothes and was leaving—overall in my backpack.

I met Devon coming up the stairs for lunch. “Hey, Shay called… she invited me to join you for pizza tomorrow.”

“That’s great!” He was smiling. “She really wants to make friends, and she likes you a lot.”

“I think she’s great when she settles down.”

What Devon said next got to the strangest part.

“Yeah… She’s nervous a lot… but it will be fun… Just be prepared for heightened security mode. Defcon five!”

He could tell I had no idea what he was talking about. “The FBI director called David Ryder… Classified intel notwithstanding, he told Mr. Ryder to up security for his family and offices until further notice.”

“The director of the FBI?”

“That’s Shay’s world, Hannah. It’s at a level I can’t imagine.”

“Well,” I said, “you’re in it now.”

He nodded. “Yeah… I am.”

Be your best you!
