Chapter 87: NEW SITUATION by Emma Knox

I was in the commons this morning having some coffee before breakfast when Noah come in. He walked up to me smiling.

“I’m working a half shift today. I was wondering if you’d care to grab some dinner around five? You can pick the place.”

I thought that sounded good. “How about we just go to the café?”

When he got back from work, he changed and we headed out. We just chatted like we always do at first.

Once the waiter brought our food, Noah changed the subject. “You know it’s Valentine’s Day?”

“I know.”

He fished an envelope from his jacket and handed it to me. I sort of blushed and opened it. It was a Valentine, of course, but inside was blank. He’d just written “Would you?”

“What does this mean?” I smiled.

My mind was racing, and as he talked he confirmed what I thought the card meant.

“You know back when I met you at the bus stop, I had you on my mind for the rest of the day.”

“So you’ve said.”

“Well, since getting to know you, my interest from that day has grown into admiration. Just so you know, I checked with Merritt about you two, and he said it had stalled… nothing was happening.”

“That’s right.” By then, I was pretty sure where he was going, so I started deciding what I thought about it.

“Valentine’s Day and all… I’m not afraid of cliches,” he said. “So, I’d like to ask if you’d agree to dating for a while to see how it goes. We’ve been talking for as long as I’ve known you, just not talking-talking. I’d like to just skip right to dating.”

“Dating?”

Noah smiled—he has a great smile. “What do you think?”

I looked down at the table for a second. I wasn’t scared, exactly—just aware that once you answer, things change.

Then I looked back up. “Noah, you’re a great guy… I like spending time with you, and we get along real good.” I paused to work out how to finish my thought.

“But?”

I shook my head. “There’s no ‘but.’ I was trying to figure out how to get to the part where I said ‘yes.’”

Then, I reached over and took his hand and squeezed it. “Hope I don’t bore you too much.”

Noah squeezed it back. “I don’t think you will.”

Chapter 88: KINDA NICE by Olivia Medina

I was not expecting to do anything tonight—Valentine’s Day—but a few days ago I was talking to Merritt Gray back at the apartments, and I sort of talked him into taking me to dinner. It was an impulsive thought.

I’m glad I had it.

Dinner was relaxed, and we talked a little about our past. I skirted around the secret aspects of being an FBI agent, but I told him general details about sitting in a van watching another van for two days, interviewing witnesses, and the grind of low-level field agent work.

He told me about Atlanta, college, and his work at NYC SysCo. It seems like he’s headed for a good career.

Now, we’re walking back to the apartments.

“That was kinda nice,” I said.

“Kinda?”

I smiled. “It kinda felt like a date, but without the tension.”

“A date…” Merritt nodded then walked a few steps before going on. “I suppose you have to define what ‘date’ means. It was definitely a planned activity between two people for social purposes… And it was nice.”

I looked over and shook my head. “So you walk around with definitions of ‘date’ just sitting in your brain?”

He laughed. “I just made that up on the spot.”

“Impressive…”

We walked quietly for a few minutes. Then he spoke up again.

“So once Shay moves in… you get some time off, right?”

I nodded. “The working plan is Eric will come visit his friend Kent, so I can get some downtime. And still negotiable is what happens if she wants to go out and leave me behind.”

“It’s complicated,” he said. “I’m sure you’ll work it all out.”

That wasn’t what I expected him to say. I thought he was going to follow up with something about us going out again when I’m not on duty.

I was about to confess that when he spoke again. “When you are on duty, you can hang out in the common area, right?”

“That’s sort of the plan for when Devon visits. They can be in the living room and have some privacy, and I can hang out with everyone.”

“That will be nice, then,” he said.

…a little vague, but kinda nice to hear.

Chapter 89: ME TIME by Hannah Madison

The fact that it’s Valentine’s Day isn’t lost on me. The fact that I am home alone isn’t either.

I’m okay with this. My relationship radar hasn’t returned anything—ahem—immediately actionable lately.

Full disclosure, I haven’t been here all night. Only long enough for two episodes of Law & Order and a History Channel show on the construction of the Panama Canal.

Earlier, I was (dressed differently!) in the common room where Devon, Conner, and Shay were sitting. Devon and Conner were talking about the identity swap that’s happening tomorrow. Shay and I talked about how nice it will be for her to live here. She followed me to my apartment and looked around for decorating ideas.

I did get a few Valentine cards. One from Emma that was as sweet as she is. Addison, of course, had cards for everyone who lives here! She bedazzled them all, too.

Merritt got everyone (I think) candy and cards. His to Emma had a bear on it waving. The caption was funny, but I don’t remember the wording exactly. Something about “bearly getting home with the chocolate.’”

Mine was two minions on a train, and it had a pun about engineering. He wrote a note: “I’m really glad we work together. It’s nice to ride in with you, and I’m looking forward to the project Will has promised to let us work up.”

That project is exciting, to be honest. Mr. Robertson is giving us a design to do from the ground up. It will just be one part of a warehouse re-engineer. We get to design the physical supports for a new lighting system. David Stewart will supervise and sign off on the designs, but Merritt and I get to work it up by ourselves.

It’s a big step for us as we work toward our licenses—a first step, but still…

And I guess that’s where I am overall in my life. Taking steps as they come, eyes on the future.

In the past, I’ve shared my thoughts about feeling like I’m ready to explore a lifetime relationship with someone. That’s a step, too. I just didn’t make any progress on that one tonight.

Be your best you!

Chapter 89: ME TIME by Hannah Madison. Hello, Hannah. I don't think I've watched a full episode of Law and Order since Jerry Orbach was no longer on. Even if you are flying solo, tonight, you are doing okay. Keep that radar on. Take care.
