GOOD MORNING

Woke up this morning and got slammed by surprises. Good things. I’m still processing.

Teaser warning: Sasha and Jasmine are up to something. It’s pretty awesome, and if you saw yesterday it follows a call from Naomi, our modeling and photography agent.

That’s not what I’m talking about this morning. Just before I came up front, this happened in the saloon.

Clay slid down the ladder from the helm when Sasha called for him to come grab some toast, and he looked around at everyone. “How many ways can we make toast?”

Geoni listed off four: toast, cheese toast, cinnamon toast, and French toast.

“Anyone missing home yet?” Clay asked as he went back up to the helm.

He didn’t wait for an answer, but I gave one. “This will sound crazy, but I’m craving a Lumberjack Slam from Denny’s”

“Of course you are!” Sasha was shaking her head and laughing.

Then the surprise…

After the laughing subsided, Micah said, “I’ve been thinking about you and Denny’s…”

“Oh?”

He nodded. “I think your love of Denny's is more psychological than it is epicurean.”

You could have heard a pin drop—if it were louder than the sound of the waves on the hull.

“What?” Micah asked.

Geoni answered for all of us. “I don’t think I was expecting you to say it with those words.”

Jasmine elbowed Micah. “Time to let the cat out of the bag.”

The rest of this chapter is exclusive to Patreon.

“Me and Jasmine… Or maybe I should say… Jasmine and I signed up for an online associate’s degree at Dallas College. I’m in a communications class and the teacher is… enthusiastic… about vocabulary words…”

“Back up!” Sasha was waving her hands. “Jasmine, what about nursing?”

“I’m still on track there. This is kinda go at your own pace. And it’s all online.”

Micah nodded. “We’re doing the transfer track—so if we stay in Texas, most of my credits should carry over to a bachelor’s degree.. That’s what they told me—just don’t go off-plan.”

Jason kind of did that dad guy thing and slapped Micah’s shoulder. “That’s great. How’s it going?”

“So far, it feels like fast high school, but I actually am old enough to be locked in and focused. So, it’s good.”

Sasha looked at Jasmine. “And you’re still good on the nursing program?”

“Yeah. I’m going to see if any of these credits will transfer, but I doubt they will—not really related. But Micah and I figured if we take the classes together, we can work on them together.”

“I just don’t want to look up in a few years and realize I could’ve done more when I had the chance,” Micah added.

“So you’re both in the program?” Josh asked.

Micah nodded. “I figured I’d be asking Jasmine for help anyway, so if we work together, we both get the degree. Two birds with one stone and all that.”

Jason said, “So you did this before you knew about helping Clay and Sasha with SwimFit, obviously?”

Micah nodded. “Yeah. I mean, the opportunity was right there. We saw how it worked with Jasmine’s nursing. I guess I grew up being taught to improve yourself if you get the chance. And Geoni’s kind of a model of that.”

He glanced over at her. “Not an insult—but you came from some pretty tough roots in Detroit… and now you’re an expert editor for technical journals.”

Geoni gave a small nod. “High school… associate’s degree… then a bachelor’s… then a lot of hard work mastering the skills.”

“Your success inspired us,” Jasmine added.

Geoni shook her head. “Anyone can work hard. I don’t think that’s inspirational.”

“This day and age, it is,” Sasha replied.

“This,” Josh said, “is really a great idea. Jasmine getting some exposure to business college fits her AGI Creative role. Micah taking the next step in his future… good stuff.”

I was nodding. Everyone encouraged them both and promised to make sure they had what they needed—including time—to be successful.

We were about to go our different ways, but I had one more thing to say. “Going back to what started this… I’m standing by my claim about the Lumberjack Slam. Just saying…”

PASS IT ON

My second surprise of the day was also revealed as we were discussing toast (and the merits of a Lumberjack Slam). Yesterday, Naomi called and Jasmine answered.

“We had to scramble into town,” Sasha explained, “but we got the product. Everything is ready to go, once we get underway and on course.”

“How can I help?”

Jasmine and Sasha exchanged looks. “We want to try to do it by ourselves, just for fun. If someone will set up the camera for closeups for us…”

Sasha nodded. “If we fall on our faces, we’ve got plenty of time to redo it before the end of the day.”

“This time,” Jasmine added, “go slow and explain why you pick each setting… I mean we know what ISO, aperture, and shutter speed are. I want to learn how they work together for the final image.”

Jason and I jumped on this idea. Passing on knowledge to our team? You bet.

Little by little, as we share skills and knowledge, we become more capable of doing more and more. Imagine this:

We pull up to an attraction somewhere along US Route 66 and jump out of the cars. Jason, Geoni, Jasmine, and I head off with cameras to capture images. Josh, Micah, Sasha, and Clay start taking notes and, on an iPad, snapping pics of placards and informational signs. How much faster could we gather how much more content?

The point is that passing on knowledge is a good thing. Geoni says that when she worked at McDonald’s, they called it cross-training. Cashiers learned to make fries and sandwiches… Grill guys learned to ring up orders…

Over the last few months, you’ve seen pictures that people besides Jason, Geoni, and me have taken. Micah’s “do something not boring” pictures were very popular!

So, no matter how the shoot goes today, it will be a win in terms of building a team. And if you ask me, that’s a plan that leads to success.

NOW HIRING by Amir Kumar

Shoreline Health and Wellness is now open. We’re early in the process of creating what I think is a unique model for community health.

At this location, we’ll offer both primary care and urgent care services. Grants are kick-starting the build-out, and we’re working to get into as many major insurance networks as possible.

In the end, it will look something like this…

Primary Care—M–F, 8am–5pm (scheduled appointments)

Full-Service Urgent Care—8am–8pm, 7 days/week

24/7 Limited-Service Urgent Care (8 p.m.–8 a.m. Overnight Services)—This warrants some discussion.

Overnight Services would serve as a first stop for issues that don’t require a doctor. EMT/Paramedic standing orders allow for some minor treatments. For instance, a skateboarder walks in with a bad case of road rash after a spill.

Triage would determine if the patient needs to be transported. If needed one of the staff doctors could do a telehealth consult. When in doubt, patients are referred out—via ambulance or self-transport to an ER.

Scope of Overnight Services :

Triage and stabilization only; transport as needed

Basic care:

Vitals, assessment

Wound cleaning/bandaging

Basic meds (per protocol)

IV fluids (if RN/Paramedic credentialed)

Telehealth consult with M.D. when needed

To reach this level of care, we need more staff. We’ve filled a few positions, but before we can go 24/7, we need quite a bit more staff.

We’ll get there. We’re actively interviewing and have an offer out to a billing and insurance candidate.

Isabela is doing patient services and is the office manager, and Carla Mendoza was hired to be the front desk lead for patient services.

We hired Lauran Pierce as RN for days along with Ethan Kim holding down imaging and labs.

Anika and I are the attending physicians. Min is in charge of hot dogs and—as a nurse practitioner—is helping fill in the gaps.

Vanessa is working to keep the grants coming and the insurance partners aligned.

We’re on the way—we hope to expand to 6am to 10pm soon, with 24/7 service in place before the summer tourist season is in full swing.

NAILED IT by Sasha Baek-Everett

Naomi called yesterday with a job. Jasmine and I rallied—the Uber driver was patient—and we found the product we were supposed to model and photograph.

She told us that if we couldn’t find the exact brand, to fake it. That… is not our style.

The shot list wasn’t overly complex. (Thinking about it, I’m not sure how to make nail polish complex, but anyway…)

“We can do this by ourselves,” Jasmine suggested.

“Let’s try!” I’m all about experimenting.

We planned it all out, then decided we’d wait on the experts to show up and help us with the technical aspects of the camera.

That was a good choice, in hindsight. We made enough mistakes without adding in camera problems.

But it was our hands on the camera and in the images. We did what Geoni calls successive approximation—something she learned about deeply in a journal article she edited. We shot something, then improved. Each shot was successively closer to what we hoped for.

There were some quantum leaps in the composition at first, then a lot of fine-detail refinement as we got closer and closer to the image we imagined when we started.

And everyone agrees that the outcome was second to none. Now we can both add “professional photographer” to our resumes!

GOOD NIGHT

I have no idea where I am. Obviously, I’m in my stateroom aboard Savannah’s Charm.I should’ve said I have no idea where the yacht is in relation to the map.

Basically, I think we are around the words “Google Maps” in the image. Maybe a little west… The boat is quiet now—just the sound of the waves on the hull. I’m left in the silence to think about today.

There was a lot of great fun today. It was a working day to be sure, and the outcome was spot on. Could Jason or I have achieved the outcome faster? Not the point today.

Sasha and Jasmine wanted support and information. They didn’t want us to do it for them.

I’m reminded of Dad patiently letting me cut the onion for the chili he was making. It was a big knife. He could have done it 20 times faster.

Instead, he showed me once, and let me go for it, coaching me not to cut off any body parts that—as he said—I might need later on.

Today, Sasha and Jasmine put in the time and effort to get to the product Naomi asked for. Like I said earlier, all of AGI Creative is better for it.

With that, I’ll wrap up the day…

May you be given the opportunity to learn new things—new skills you can use to live your life better.

Good night.

Be your best you!

GOOD MORNING. Good morning, Ailana. Woow! That was a whirligig of news, wasn't it? Even online, though, though, they are going to be busy. When you are able to land at Denny's again, you should totally trat yourself. I guess more on Naomi later. Have a great day.

PASS IT ON. Always a good idea. What if someone is sick? What if more than one opportunity comes in? Cross training is always a good idea. Thumbs up.
