Chapter 48: ALWAYS THIS NICE by Liza McDuffey

I met Hannah at the Crossroads Phase II site just as she was heading out.

“I texted you some notes,” she said as she put on her coat. “Mr. Robertson just asked me to get to Queens ASAP to meet the foreman of an overnight crew to… never mind. Questions must be answered. See you later.”

I thought that sounded, to be honest, a little scary. Drop everything and go… never mind.

When I turned around, Merritt was standing where Hannah had been, holding out her hard hat. “Wanna have a look?”

He showed me what Hannah had sent notes on. “You can see the demo is done. Busy week… but now the fun begins.”

He pointed out the support beams and columns, then nodded toward a wall. “This one can’t be ripped out. Replacing it with posts and beams would be a long process, so we’re just going to move the line around until it’s in the right place as is.”

“Let me sit down and add a few notes to what Hannah sent over.”

We got to the bottom of the stairs and I sat down. Merritt sat with me and helped me flesh out the notes.

I was scrolling through the list when he stood up. “Hungry? When did you eat lunch?”

“I had a small salad and some leftover sausage biscuits from breakfast. Around noon.”

“Let’s grab a sub and some chips? My treat… My mom still likes to send me allowance money on Fridays. Same amount since I got my driver’s license—twenty bucks. How about it?”

I hesitated, then asked something that’s been on my mind. “Are you this nice to everyone? You’ve been really good to me since we met.”

He offered me a hand to get up. “I hope so. Nice is usually free. I’d say something about karma if I believed in it. More of a ‘do unto others’ thing for me…”

“I see how you are with everyone—even your ex and Noah… strangers on the street, the waiters… and you’ve been so nice to me.”

“Well you’re nice too. That makes it easy.”

We put the hard hats in a locker and headed to the sub shop. I should admit that I like how Merritt treats me. He’s not the only one who is nice to me, but he’s the one buying me a sub right now.

I know I’m very grateful.
