GOOD MORNING

Hope you’re having a good weekend. Looks like we are on schedule to hit Galveston about this time tomorrow. To be honest, I have mixed feelings.

How many times have I mentioned that life out to sea is relaxing. With limited options, you have limited choices. I stress less about where to go or what to do. I might even work more efficiently.

My preference for simplicity probably explains why the efficiency condo suits me so well. For the long-term, I admit, you probably need a few more things than for only a few days or even a month. But I’m sure I don’t need a big house with rooms I never use. Even after the wedding, my plan is to keep things simple. I’ll move my clothes and bathroom supplies to Jason’s unit, and leave the 3rd floor unit like it is.

I suppose we’ll have to move my food, too! Waste not, want not…

On the other hand, yacht life notwithstanding, I’m excited to discover new things—and to share them with you. Galveston will be a new adventure. We’ll sample a few things and I’ll share some with you.

Okay, back to now! I’m sitting on the foredeck of the bow lounge. The camera is angled a little. The white edge you see behind my left arm is pointing forward. So that’s where I am. I like this part of the boat.

Next for me is to shower and dress. Then, we’ll angle closer to shore, drop anchor, and do a Sunday time with each other.

Looks like a good day of sailing. If you’re a weather enthusiast, check out a site called Windy.com On Windy, you see, not only wind, but also clouds, temperature, waves, and much more.

Not sponsored!

I guess that’s enough for now, so I should get going. In the meantime, I hope you have a great Sunday morning. See you soon!

MAKING AMENDS by Min Aurora

Sometimes, I find that I need to take a morning and regroup. Usually, that means facing the consequences of mistakes I’ve made recently.

Shortly after arriving in Port Isabel, I met a guy. Elias Estephan. We hit it off.

For days, there were ongoing texts. There were dinners. There were walks on the beach. Even on this beach—even this very stretch.

A couple of weeks ago, something happened. I’m not proud of myself.

The clinic work ratcheted up to nearly all-consuming levels. I let a few calls go to voicemail. Not that I wanted to. Because I had to.

I called back when I could.

We started getting patients before we had started hiring staff. I said I’d call him back and didn’t. Twice. I left him on read three times.

I could tell he was tiring of coming second to my work. I told myself I’d do better as soon as a few things got put into place.

A week ago, he said the sea turtles were getting busy. He had to go up the island to Padre Island National Seashore and do some pre-nesting-season work. Like a nesting area security guard, I guess.

He said there’s not much cell coverage up there. None in a lot of places. He’s supposed to be back tonight.

So here I am, kicking myself. I let my to-do list put something I truly wanted at risk.

I walked by myself for days in Malaysia coming slowly to realize I was ready to stop living my life alone. Then as soon as things got hectic, I started telling myself I could call back tomorrow. And I didn’t.

So, a guy that checked all the boxes headed off to no-cell-land. I’m sitting here with sandy feet and a sore spot in my soul.

I have to change some things.

Here’s the thing I want to leave with from this beach. Resolution to know what’s important to me and keep that first and foremost.

I hope I haven’t lost him permanently to the turtles. If I have, I might have to grow a shell and flippers.

I’ll start by calling him on the phone.

SHORT STOP

SHORT STOP—We’re anchored once more for a short stop on our cruise. When Clay announced the idea, it startled me.

What I heard him say was, “Hey… we need a shortstop… I think we’ve got some seaweed on the sensor for the depth sounder.”

I flashed back to high school softball. I thought he was suggesting that in some way, I could deal with the seaweed. I sorted out what he actually meant.

It’s funny how we hang on to our perceived identity. Going way, way back, the day I ran off the elementary school playground and ended up at the middle school watching girls play softball, I’ve had that self perception.

I remember once asking Jason what his friends thought about me. “You're the nice, smart, thoughtful girl that should have been a cheerleader, not a shortstop. And… pure… Hands off, guys. They think… we’re…”

I have two thoughts about what he said. First off, my perception of myself meant there was absolutely no way I would have been a cheerleader. I was locked in on playing softball.

I wonder how many people reading this see themselves in a certain way? I’m not saying being a shortstop was bad. I’m just saying it precluded other possibilities.

Should we stop sometimes and ask, “What else is possible for me?”

My second thought about that conversation (which is from the “Growing Up Ailana” collection on Patreon) is that I shouldn’t have cut Jason off. He was about to say that the guys thought we’d been dating for a long time!

I cut him off before he got to what probably was the more important part of his answer. I’ll just let that thought stand on its own.

By the way, I am about to put on a swim mask and see about the seaweed! Clay says it will be trivial, so I think I got it.

Batter up!

GOOD NIGHT

Another day out to sea comes to an end. It was a nice, relaxing day.

I’m sitting in the aft lounge, which is just forward of the swim platform where I was sitting earlier today. I started the day in the forward lounge. I’m ending it aft.

My quest to clear seaweed from the depth sounder sensor was a success. I honestly can’t tell you why it got stuck there. Clay insisted he wasn’t surprised. Seaweed is, he claims, tenacious—and creative.

Anyone could have done it. It took one breath to find it (Clay’s instructions were great). A second breath was all it took to solve the problem.

I suppose I could wax into some discourse about trying new things… the value of knowledge, experience, and the ability to give instructions… or letting yourself operate outside your past experiences.

But, instead, I’ll wrap up the day.

May you know who you are, but leave open the possibility that you can change, grow, and experience different things.

Good night.

Be your best you!

MAKING AMENDS by Min Aurora. Hello Min. Good to hear from you. Ok. You guys are just ramping up. That takes a LOT of time and energy. He's a smart guy. He'll understand and stand by...for you. For all you know, YOU check all his boxes. So, don't assume. Anything. Call him. And then you'll need to understand when his work has to come first for a bit. It's ok to get bogged down. Just...make sure you call. and don't apologize a thousand times. Once at first, and again at the end. If he is a top guy, that's enough. As I said, just remember when the foot fits the other shoe, uh, shoe drops on the other foot. Whatever! Thanks for posting. Big thanks for the bonus photos. Very nice. Please stay in touch.

SHORT STOP. Mostly, I keep wondering why YOU had to fix the seaweed. Did you volunteer? I'm sure you are capable, just thought maybe you lost the coin toss and had to go down. Or did I miss something there? Anyway, if you think of it, which Growing Up link refers to the moment you said. Anyway, thanks for your post.
