Chapter 68: WHAT HAPPENED by Hannah Madison
Friday, something happened to me. It was far greater than me agreeing to date Merritt.
I said yes and something changed. It is difficult for me to describe it, but I feel it.
After coming to New York, I grew into a mindset that things were settling down around me. I was done with college. I was starting my license. I had a good job, a nice place to live, and some great friends.
A switch in my brain flipped on: time to find someone to spend my life with. It wasn’t a panic. It wasn’t trivial. It was just there. Present. An abiding sensation.
By the time dessert was served on Friday night, that switch was off. The “find” mode seemed to be gone. I don’t really know if it makes sense, but I suddenly came to a point where I was no longer looking for possibilities.
A possibility had appeared and picked me.
So, now, “find” mode is off and something different is going on. I don’t like the way my brain has framed what it’s doing now, but the only thing I can think of is to say “test” mode is on.
Hypothesis: Merritt is the one.Experiment: Devise a way to test the hypothesis. Conclusion: Evaluate results.
That is definitely not how I feel. It’s not some cold, calculated experiment, but that’s the thinking part of my brain sending words to my consciousness.
If I were to connect words to the feelings, they would be words like safe, relaxed, intrigued, honored, interested, at ease, and at peace.
One part of my brain asks could it be? A different part of my brain says to think it is until something proves it isn’t.
And then that rational brain kicks in and makes it all into a to-do:
Go slow, have fun, enjoy the process, see what happens.

Thank-You Message to Paying Supporters:
Thank you for helping support AGI Stories. At the time of this post (not counting hardware or internet costs), expenses run just over $100 per month—so every supporter truly makes a difference.
As you know, I share a lot of content free to all, and I believe you understand why. Stories about giving back and helping shouldn’t be exclusive, and key moments need to be accessible for anyone following the stories.
With that in mind, I always consider you—the paid members—when deciding how content is shared.
My hope is that reserving a few photos and small portions of posts for you serves as a simple expression of gratitude.
I believe that most of you who help with the costs do so because you want to support the production process and show encouragement. I’m honored and truly grateful.
Again, thank you very much.
