GOOD MORNING by Kirina Yung

Ricky is opening Sea Glass today and I am going to go in later and close it. I am thinking a lot about Ailana’s wedding, but probably not what you’re thinking.

Yes, Eli and I are looking at a future together. We believe that will come in time.

I did not need Ailana’s wedding to put my mind on those thoughts, for it was the reception that inspired me, because the reception was at Sea Ranch Marina, and it is there that my yacht, Sea Glass, is docked.

And on my yacht is my little music studio.

My heart has not forgotten what my schedule has forbidden. Opening Sea Glass Gallery, Sandwich, and Coffee Shop has consumed all of my time.

But the passing of months has let me get everything set up and running. Ricky Martinez is a capable manager. The others we’ve hired are good, dependable workers.

I believe the time has come for me to set aside a few hours here and there to return to my music. I’ll let Ricky run things, and we can make one of the others an assistant manager if we need to.

Before moving here, I was making headway with my catalog. The micropennies from digital music rights were less than nothing.

And, although nothing new has been added, my little collection of niche music still produces. However, it really isn’t about the income. It is about passion. It is about the expression of feelings that will not yield themselves to words.

I asked Eli what he thought. His answer was surprising.

“I’ve wondered when you’d return to your roots.”

And so I will.

I CAN MAKE IT by Emily Amos

Well, my mother totally freaked out on me this morning. She threatened to call the cops. Now that’s a twist, ’cause I’ve been thinking of doing that.

I won’t because it would mess up my plan. And I can’t let her do that, because it would get me back into foster care and everything would go sideways.

After the iPad incident the other night, I decided I’d be better off crashing anywhere but here. After school Friday, I had to work anyway, so I crashed in the storeroom like I used to do. I managed a couple of nights in the thrift store bathroom.

I also slept in an ER waiting room one night. I went in the main entrance and made my way through like I was visiting someone, then got to the ER right when the guards were changing shifts. It was crowded and I didn’t do anything to call attention to myself. I got away with it.

My mother should have been sleeping, and I needed to get some clean clothes and a few other things, so I came back here. She had a customer just leaving, and she caught me.

She blew up.

She said if she wakes up and finds me missing, she’s calling the police and reporting me. I said if she does, I’ll report her!

“You wouldn’t dare!”

“You better bet I would,” I said. “So just leave me alone.”

All the same, I’m not going anywhere right now. I can wait out these last days.

On the off chance she did report me, everything would be messed up. I’ve been planning for months and dreaming for a year. I can hold out five more days.

GOOD KID by Dan Mercer

My daughter, Jenna, is a good kid. I don’t know how it happened, but I think she’s turning out pretty great.

When Mari and I had her in 2009, I looked at my wife and said, “I can’t do this.”

She said, “But we can.”

And we did. For seven years, she was the axis around which everything turned. But in 2016, I lost her in a traffic accident while I was out on patrol. I was saving the lives of strangers out to sea while my life on shore was collapsing.

What could I do? I buckled up and pushed on. I turned down some things at work so I could be there for my little girl.

She’s sixteen now, and not so little.

Driving down from Galveston, she looked at me. “Dad, listen… I’m not trying to show up to school in August not knowing anyone. I’m going to make friends and have a summer. You understand?”

It wasn’t a question about whether I approved. It was a declaration. She wanted to make sure I got it. I did.

There’s a maintenance guy here—Allen Geven—and his daughter just got married. In fact, Jenna and I saw the wedding letting out. I ran into him in the building today and congratulated him.

“Chief,” he said, “the years flew by. She was playing junior varsity shortstop one minute. Now, she’s married. I know it’s a cliché, but don’t miss out.”

Jenna told me this morning that the girl from Whataburger and the guy I said could cut our yard had invited her to youth group Wednesday night. This time she asked if she could go—instead of just telling me. She knows when to ask…

“I met a guy that just moved in Thursday,” she added. “He’s getting adopted, and he’s new here, too.”

Small world: the kid—Kel—is being adopted by a family that is best friends with Allen’s daughter.

Or at least, small island.

At this pace, I might be the one who needs a rescue boat. So far for Jenna, though, everything seems shipshape and go for launch.

GOOD NIGHT

Being in charge of the Journal while Ailana is on her honeymoon turns out to be a lot of work! I was trying to think of something for the goodnight post and…

…I decided to copy the boss lady, AGI’s very own blanket queen!

“Clay,” I said, “hand me a blanket, please.”

He caught on, laughing. “I’ll open the curtains so the whole neighborhood can see you. That’s how she does it, right? Where’s the camera?”

I laughed. “Just use your phone.”

Ailana and Jason were able to send a few messages along the way when they were in range of cell towers. All’s well!

They will get back home tomorrow, so you won’t have to put up with faux-Ailana again. I’ll gladly yield!

I’d like to thank everyone for letting Ailana have a few days away from posting. She said she was worried about letting everyone down.

I said, “Too bad for them! It’s your honeymoon. So, just… no. Go! Don’t make me change the passwords to your accounts!”

I’m sure you understand, but thank you, all the same.

So, now that the wedding is over and the adoption is in its final stages, I guess Baby Everett is the next big thing happening. I guess we’re all due for a little calm before Naomi calls next…

“Yo! I need men in tuxedos spinning hula hoops! STAT!”

And really, isn’t the unexpected more interesting anyway?

Let me close out with something that Ailana might have said.

May life move you along a peaceful path with just enough curves to keep things interesting, just enough slopes to make you feel like you’ve accomplished something, and just enough views to make you catch your breath.

Good night.
