Chapter 126: NOW WHAT by Emma Knox

Well, everything just went sideways, as they say. I really don’t know what else to say.

Last night, Rebecca and Paul sent text messages to the Pay It Forward Society group asking us all to meet. This time, we met in Tom’s conference room.

Will Robertson and Tom were there. The point of the meeting was to tell us all what Rebecca and Paul had already told you. The Society is missing. Or gone. Tom told all of us that June rent was taken care of and that under no circumstances would anyone get evicted. A lot of things were said, but that’s the sum of it.

Naturally, everyone was shocked. But for them, it came down to what Merritt said.

“I guess we’ll have to start paying rent.”

Most of them had been doing that before Pay It Forward Society ever come along.

Noah had to go right to work, so we’re just now getting a chance to discuss things. We walked across the street to Crossroads Apartments Phase II and just sat on the steps.

“I’m not looking to take charity,” I said.

“I know…” Noah shook his head. “We don’t have to, you know.”

I nodded. “Yeah… Our backup plan…”

We sat quiet for a while. I was scared to say anything, for fear of crying. Noah just let me hold on.

Finally, he took my hand. “Do you love me?”

I smiled. “Yes.”

“And you know I love you, right?”

I nodded. “Yes, I know.”

“We’ll get through this. We have a month. We can do it.”

It’s going to mean some changes, and right now, I can’t get myself steady enough to say the words out loud. But to be honest, I know in my heart everything will work out.

“When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. In God, whose word I praise—in God I trust and am not afraid.”—Psalm 56:3–4 (ESV)

Chapter 127: RESET AT CROSSROADS by Hannah Madison

I suppose if you’ve seen one warehouse from the 1970s you’ve seen them all. I'm no expert, but I’ve learned enough to know where some of the major problems will be. And also enough to keep a pair of flats handy.

Everyone woke up unsettled today, if the breakfast chatter is any indication. All of us who are part of Pay It Forward Society learned that it’s gone MIA. That’s a big change to our budgets.

For most of us, it means reducing the amount we’ve been saving by the amount of our rent, which Tom has made very reasonable.

Emma is more than unsettled. I told her she could live with me—no change, no problem.

She just shook her head and said something about not wanting to live off charity when there were other options.

She, however, would not elaborate. I’ll give her time to calm down and make the offer again.

I pushed Paul and Rebecca for information. They have nothing. Emails are bouncing. The server is missing.

Paul did tell me that the hangar for the jet is paid in advance for the next nine months. The same goes for the parking spaces for the two Expeditions.

But dead silence is scary. I’m not counting on a phoenix moment, but I hope it happens.

That’s all for now.

Today’s visit to the warehouse is to find out whether the manager is right that the breaker for the forklift charging system is somewhere other than where the diagram says it is. Is that me sticking my finger into the electrical engineer’s slice of pie?

That’s how you get burned, you know?

Don’t worry… I’m not touching any wiring. I’m just looking for a circuit breaker!

See you soon.

Chapter 126: NOW WHAT by Emma Knox. Hello Emma. When you guys were questioning things a while back, I admit I scoffed. What, me worry? Attitude. I apologize. Sincerely. That is a good verse, Emma. You can draw strength from it, both of you. One month. Take care.

Chapter 127: RESET AT CROSSROADS by Hannah Madison. Hello Hannah. I complement you again on your classy professional attire. Thanks for the further details on the developing situation. Very mysterious. I've worked in, I think, 4 warehouses. Crown and OSHA forklift licenses. Never found them alike, other than giant racks. But they are mysterious places at night. Very glad you are investigating during the day shift. And you are right. Very important to know where that breaker is. Careful with the progress. You are probably his equal in rank, but no reason to test that unless he gets attitudinal with you. and he shouldn't unless he cut corners. Good luck.
