Chapter 3.1.24: WILL MIRACLES NEVER CEASE? by Izzy Duffy
It’s my last day working for Habitat Housing, and I’ve teared up more than once. The last time was due to a phone call I made.
About half an hour ago, I left the office for lunch. After lunch, I decided to stop in this convenience store for a cup of coffee… as you do, right?
During lunch, I made the call that made me cry.
“Ailana? Izzy… How’s your road trip going?”
Ailana Geven Keller, my longtime friend, told me about their Route 66 odyssey—as she called it—then asked how things were coming with my job change and our move to South Padre Island.
“Things sped up,” I said. “I’m supposed to start on the 15th. Kent and I have been working on paperwork and even some applications for work licenses, but we could use some reconnaissance on finding an apartment. Do you have any suggestions? I’m looking at Zillow, and everything looks nice, but they are ads, right? Can I ask about some places?”
There was a very long pause, and I thought the call had dropped—they were driving when I called. I was about to call back when she spoke again.
“Here’s a thought…” she said. “The condo building AGI Creative owns has two soon-to-be-vacant efficiency units. Ground floor and top floor… you remember, of course. Well, Jason, Emily, and I are moving out of them and into one of the two-bedrooms so we can be inside the same home… you know… like normal people!”
“That makes sense,” I replied.
Over the month, she’d talked to me about becoming the guardian of her half-sister, Emily. She said that the caseworker recommended they not live in separate condos—which makes sense of course.
“So, Clay and Sasha bought the house across the street and are… like right now… moving everything there. All that Jason, Emily, and I have to move is our clothes and some kitchen stuff. Linens… things like that. You and Kent could move in… Sunday… if you don’t mind us crossing paths moving out.”

“How much will that cost us?” I thought it was a normal question.
This time there was no hesitation.“Let’s get you moved in and settled. You can get a look at your finances and… I don’t know… compare to other places around the area. Maybe in September, you tell me how much you feel like paying.”
I am sure that’s what she said, it just seemed too good to be true. “So, you mean just live there a month and a half and then decide what the rent will be?”
“Yeah,” Ailana replied. “And I’ll probably make you do some modeling, too. Naomi still has your book open, right?”
Head spinning, I answered. “Yes… I’ve done a few jobs in New York over the last year. The last big one was when I went to Paris with you.”
“We’re working pretty closely with her now. I’m sure we can get you into some shoots. A couple of the women at the clinic have already worked for us… Vanessa and Min.”
Head spinning more, I answered again. “Okay… that sounds…”
That’s when the tears welled up. “Ailana, this is a miracle. Kent and I… the move is going to be tough for a while until he gets his Texas license. This… It’s…”
“Don’t worry about it,” Ailana replied. “I actually am a little giddy thinking about it! This is going to be so awesome! And I can’t wait for you to meet Emily. And the Ryan’s adoption is all but final, so you’ll get to meet Kel, as well.”
I’ll spare you from me telling you everything else we talked about. I’ll just say that it really feels like another miracle has happened. Kent and I are going to be able to settle in with a lot less stress, and right in the middle of people we already know.
I need to hurry back to work, but I just now noticed my coffee cup has a little leak. I’ll deal with that first.
Now, I’ll wrap this up, and I’ll close by saying Kent and I have a lot to talk about! And it’s all good.
